Paypal Auto Currency Exchange For Purchases

I bought something in dollars through paypal.

They show it in the payment history of my paypal account as dollars.

Now I did look for currency options when buying but there were none that I could see so I went ahead thinking paypal might take a small margin if they do covert with their exchange rate.

My card was charged basically the same euro amount as dollar amount. This is a premium of over 5% on a reasonable exchange rate.

Is there any option to allow selection of currency when buying in paypal? If not I wont be giving them 5% every time a purchase is not in euro. That is excessive...

At the checkout you should have an option to be charged in requested currency without PayPal conversion fee.

Agreed there should be. I went back and had another look for a different purchase in dollars. There is no option that I can see. I think Im done with paypal. That is shocking policy unless theres an option in the paypal account settings to allow selection of currency without paypal exchange rates…

I got caught twice with this nonsense payment with PayPal via Revolut. Second time I did everything right made sure there was no reason whatsoever for dollars to be involved at all, and they still smdid some dodgy conversion so no more PayPal for me.

In my case seller was offering a dollar price. No other option. So I wanted revolut to handle the exchange rate from dollars back to the euro amount charged to my card. Paypal went ahead with the exchange from dollar to euro using their own rate and charged me in euro. Im assuming they do this because my paypal account is registered in a euro region and they make plenty not giving anyone the option to convert with their own bank / card exchange rate. Pretty low carry on.

It's a merchant option not a PayPal policy. PayPal never assume the FX risk, either the merchant accpts that they'll be paid in whatever currency you choose or PayPal hits you with whatever rate they choose (and it won't be good). Complain to the merchant, perhaps if they get enough complaints they might change their policy.

I got caught with Paypal's conversion rate 5 yrs ago.Ain't used them since.Sent several messages and eventually starting getting robotic answers. The merchant policy was never mentioned. It was PP picking an imaginary exchange rate and sticking a commission on it.

Im pretty sure a few years ago Paypal would allow customer to choose the currency they paid without PayPal's inflated exchange rates. I take your point that they are now not assuming the FX risk. Fair enough. As for how it isnt their policy when they used to allow the choice... I must be missing something.

When you go to your paypal wallet and select your payment card you get the following:

    paypal001.JPG

Select "Change" under Currency and you get:

    paypal002.JPG

If I had selected USD here would PayPal have charged my card in dollars with no PayPal exchange rate? It looks that way…

So technically it looks like they are allowing it but it would be decent of them to offer this at payment time no matter who the merchant is. Amazon have a nice drop down option at checkout to allow this choice for customers.

Also say I set my card to dollars and forget to change it back. Then I buy something in euros at a later date. Same process in reverse?

Anyway lesson learned for me. PayPal will not give you the choice when paying. Looks like you have to select currency in your card settings before each payment.

Pretty lousy as they know plenty will get caught with it and they'll make an easy 5% every time…

This is different to your original statement:

Now I did look for currency options when buying but there were none

Here you are referring to how the merchant charges your PayPal account. And it is legally impossible for PayPal to unilaterally break the contract with the merchant and process the payment in another currency.

When you go to your PayPal wallet and select your payment card you get the following

Here you are talking about how PayPal charges you and that is a completely seperate agreement and therefore you and PayPal are completely free to contract any way you want. [And yes if you change the currency on this screen ALL of your charges will be converted and charged to that card in the currency you have selected, although the rate might not be good]

I guess it would be possible for PayPal to offer some kind of option to select a currency for card charges when you are redirected to their website in the payment process…. lodge a complaint/suggestion perhaps if enough do so it will happen.

For me PayPal is only useful in a few situations:

    • If for some reason I don't want to give my card details to the merchant.
    • The merchant only accepts PayPal
    • And for a while, when I was buying/selling stuff in Dollars on EBay.

Here you are referring to how the merchant charges your PayPal account.

In the next sentence I state I was referring to how PayPal charged my card. Im not concerned with the merchant.

I agree with the rest of your post.

So I tested this out today for buying something in GBP and got revolut's exchange rate from euro to GBP. All good.

However after assigning GBP to my debit card I got a message saying I can only change currency a limited number of times.

A quick google informs me the change currency limit for a payment card is 3 times per month.

    Paypal really are pathetic.
