Just had a quick nip of that Ardfallen 10 on an overnight fasted palate and it really , REALLY is something special at a twenty something price tag .Is it likely to be something the Cooley distillery had squirelled away or what ? Theres little scope for Sleight of hand with 10 year old Irish I guess compared with scotch …I’m strongly considering getting another 2 or 3 bottles of this instead of ‘something- a bit more- special ‘ in the whiskey line for Christmas .Could you call it ‘Redbreast Lite ‘ ? Would that be closer than cutprice Teeling Brabazon 1 ? As a grain hater this is a revelation , sherry sweet but with a bit of extra subtlety .The Moscatel casked grain is to the fore but a VERY high quality Bourbon casked Malt is adding serious mouthfeel and even vaguely Barry Crockett like nuance

I got a bottle of their peated cask strength last Christmas and really like it; bought another bottle when I was passing during the summer

Did anyone try the Bushmills 15 yet? I've 2 bought for Christmas gifts but wondering if I should grab more while it's back down to £39 (GB/NI only on Amazon).

If it's the one finished in Cognac casks I've tried it and really like it. The brother brought me a bottle from England. In a blind tasting you probably wouldn't guess it's Bushmills but it's very good.

How do you do that with the tasting note type comments? I either like it or I dont but I'm useless at describing the taste and thats after multiple distillery tours and even a day at the Irish Whiskey Academey at Midleton. I can just about tell a pot still from a burbon, and its not from lack of "tasting" :)

Butting in from the beer world (I have no palate for whisky) but the most important factor in learning to write tasting notes is to read or listen to loads and loads of them, and then taste what they're talking about. It's not possible to pick it up just by drinking. Like any skill, it takes a while to develop.

Any time you drink a new whisky, find someone's review of it and see how it relates. Someone who isn't the distillery, of course.

Proximo hardly bought it for it's share of the Irish market. 😂

I simply asked it it sold well in the States 🙄

It might even be a relief for them not to have to service the Irish market, considering how small it is.

For my tasting I go through the list on this website and just think, do I smell/taste this thing. Yes or no

    He hasn't owned the whiskey for a number of years;

Age is a huge factor in quality, but for the sake of balance, that actual age not the statement.

All whiskey has an age. Stating it on the label, doesn't changes anything. A non age statement 18 year old should be worth as much as an 18 year on the label whiskey

Proximo distribute a bunch of brands, and getting a restaurant or bar to 'try' a new one is the usual route for a new brand… in fact (checks the point of sale systems I look after (remotely) in NJ) the two Proper 12 variants are on 1/4 of the systems… having said that, no sales are showing for Nov 2024 in those locations… methinks a rebranding will be on the way

Article in the Sunday Times today about Waterford. They owe HSBC €70 million. Reynoir values their stock at €140 million

Says nobody wants their stock. Values it at 140m. Hmmmm. He's come across as a bit delusional in a couple of articles about it now.

I used be broadly similar and still can’t get much of a nose off whiskey beyond ethanol most of the time but with practice (!) you get to pick out certain tastes .Its very very similar with coffee .Could be wrong half the time , might get peach when it’s ’meant To be ‘ apricot etc.But unless you stray down the dark roads of peat , smoke or salty seaweed etc most Irish ( whiskey) is oaky and butter biscuit with grain like Paddy being a bit more minty and malts a bit more peppery .Cask finishes usually come through a fair bit …

Is it really that nice? or is it just a decent daily drinker?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,775 ✭✭✭2011abc

In between? If Paddys Share and it were both 29.99 Id probably buy the Aldi 10 over it .If the Paddys Share were 25 I might still buy the Aldi maybe 20-45% of the time.If Id paid 50 for it as a Christmas Special I wouldnt be complaining .I think every irish whiskey fan should try it.Theres nothing under 30 can go head to head with it so its not a daily drinker .Oh and as LawrenceS said it goes down fiendishly easy.

Some good deals in SV at the minute...eg Paddy's Share €25, 3 Swallow €30, Jameson single pot still €48, Method & Madness €53. The Jameson would be my pick of those

On the subject of supermarket own label \ bottlings… anyone try any of the Scotches in M&S?
    They are priced €41.

    Kenmore Speyside single malt
    Kenmore Islands single malt
    Kenmore Highland single malt

Seems a bit pricey for no age statement, given they also have an 8yo Blended Scotch for €28.

Also Six Isles Reserve, blend of malts from Islay, Jura, Orkney, Skye, Mull and Arran.
Seems similar to Rock Island from Douglas Laing

M&S have done their own bottlings with Glenfarclas and Kilchoman, so I think they're reasonably safe hands when it comes to whiskey. It would always probably be an odd choice to single them out as a place to buy from, unless it was convenient for some reason, but I'd expect their stuff to be good. The Speyside bottlings they have done won awards in the past, but you don't know if it's a similar whiskey these days.

I don't know I'd agree with your price comparison. A no age statement single malt at 41 euro versus an 8 year old blended scotch…

I'd probably take punt on the regional whiskey, on the basis that if it's a decent Islands or Speyside whiskey, you kind of know what you'll be getting to a greater degree...

Blends with age statements sometimes make me just think they've got them to try and add credibility. The price point would make me a little wary as well, sooner just buy a JW Black label or Chivas Regal on sale, if I wanted to go that route.

All that Douglas Laing, Berry Bros etc. those scotch bottlings, they're mostly great value and I'd always recommend them. Master of Malt and others' own bottlings likewise. Whether mystery distillery single malts or blends like Scallywag, Rock Island, Epicurean etc.

Treated myself to a new Scotch while there were big discounts to be had last week. Benrinnes 15 year old Speyside single malt from the Flora & Fauna series. Gorgeous. Took a sample out for tonight, but putting the rest away for a while.

Are the M&S bottlings available in the Republic or are you up north? Would be very interested in trying some of the single malts

Henry Street Dublin 1 store has the Kenmore single malts, Six Isles reserve in giftbox, a 10yo Speyside in giftbox, 8yo blended and a basic blended.

In places with smaller offie eg Santry there was only the blended and one of the Kenmores iirc

Havent seem any bottlings with specific distilleries but they may have been involved in previous "Kenmore" bottlings.

There's also some interesting looking bottlings of Brandy, Rum, Armagnac. Might suit those who receive M+S vouchers as xmas presents.
