Oh christ, their tanoy anouncements are getting really annoying, kind of like the supermarkets that you went to Lidl to avoid.

I was in Aldi for the first time in ages and while it had a smaller range it did make realise how much Lidl is morphing. Think I'll be heading to Aldi more often.

I have a serious weakness for those fizzy worms, I was delighted with that!

Still just brings it to the price they were about a year ago. Tesco still have the equivalent for 85c.

My Aldi got self service in today. Feckin car crash 🙄.

At least they opened extra tills when the saw it wasn't working.

I didn't realise the app is doing a daily Black Friday deal this week.

Today is a couple of euro off a frying pan. Anyone know what they had on the other days?

Yeah even lidl themselves have similar bars for about 77c !

The other days were discounts on toys, winter clothing, can't remember the others

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,102 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

I posted the toys on the first day. Another one was ski stuff I think. I was waiting for the frying pans to appear but I got one from the VDP for €2 Tuesday.

I've just realised I missed out on Lidl's Black Friday voucher yesterday. How ever will I live on missing out on whatever that garbage was?

    Today's "bargain".

I'd be curious to know, if anyone has ever walked out with 15 Silvercrest products in 1 transaction. I am on the look out for a toaster, but the last range I seen there smacked of shoddy workmanship.

Do you not use the Dunnes vouchers? I do a shop for over €125 every weekend and use the vouchers to get €25 off. Basically a full trolley for €100, I think that's great value given the quality compared to Lidl.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,037 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

don’t you think Dunnes are taking into account the vouchers when pricing their products, they are relying on people buying a full trolley of shopping, they aren’t losing money obviously

Only way to really save money is hit the special offers in your nearest supermarkets like super 6 or equivalent.

Some people prefer one supermarket over another but I prefer money in my pocket over loyalty

    The internet isn’t for everyone

Dunnes loves customers like you! You're snared in the Dunnes coupon cycle 😉

It is only if you buy basics that cost the same elsewhere that you will come out better

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,341 ✭✭✭OfflerCrocGod

Exact opposite, I hate the basics from Lidl. For example their breakfast cereals. Absolute rubbish, would much rather buy branded stuff for things like that and for that Dunnes is better value.

The fruit I've already mentioned but I got the free easy peelers from Lidl and they are sitting next to a box of the same fruit from Dunnes. Unsurprisingly the Lidl ones aren't being touched.

Look at the canned peas from this thread. Muck. People sharing tips on how to make the chewable by soaking them for 24 hours. Buy some freshly frozen petite pois from Dunnes for €1 and eat a nice dinner. Couldn't care less about saving 90¢ for a family meal if it means the kids refuse to eat anything.

Comparing canned peas to petits pois is really grasping at straws. They sell perfectly good petit pois in Lidl and Aldi too.

I got 30% of bellarom range hahahhah

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 677 ✭✭✭EarWig

    'only if you buy basics'

Well what about the chocolate tubs. Did anyone else beat Dunnes inclusive of the vouchers?

    Here's a cracker.

TODAY: Barry's Tea 160 bags (25% extra free, so 200 bags): €7.79 -then add voucher

Lots and lots of examples where you can stock up and make very good gains.

all breakfast cereal is rubbish let’s be honest, it’s sugar disguised as breakfast

Organic whole oats - Skyr- Eggs are the better options for nutrition but each to their own I guess

Lidl also sell petit pois (posh peas)

    The internet isn’t for everyone

Can't believe people still think like this. Where do they think those basics are made??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,508 ✭✭✭batistuta9

you see this posted a lot, what does it matter where they're made? doesn't indicate the taste or quality of the item. it's as if being made in the same factory as branded stuff equals they're the same. like cooking a 1 euro pizza in a michelin star restaurant doesn't make it any nicer 😂

i worked in factories so always thought that was obvious along with just try it to see what you think

Oh so factories producing food, stop all production of say, cornflakes, clean all the machines, then use them to produce lower quality food, then stop production again, clean the machines and start again to make food of higher quality.

    Seems very productive 🙄

😂😂 well they don't do it in a dairy I know, they make butter, ice cream, uht milk etc. It just has different packaging.

nor in washing powder/soap/washing up liquid factory that my man worked in years ago, same stuff, different packaging.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,341 ✭✭✭OfflerCrocGod

My point is you can't compare the cheapest products you can get in Lidl with standard Dunnes products or branded products. In some cases they are comparable quality but quite often they are much worse taste/quality so of course they're cheaper.

Lidl aren't selling their petit pois for ¢11. It's much closer to Dunnes €1 so throw in the €10 of €50 vouchers and you'll end up either at a similar price or better off. Honestly Lidl and Aldi are simply not as compelling as they were when they first arrived in Ireland.

And I'm not going to traipse around 5 shops to save €5 on carrots and potatoes for the week or whatever random special offers are on. Simply not worth my while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,508 ✭✭✭batistuta9

if it was only the same packaging there'd be no difference in taste or consistency 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,821 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

    Deleted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,370 ✭✭✭✭suvigirl

There isn't. Not on the products I'm talking about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,508 ✭✭✭batistuta9

milk & that? maybe not that much. i was in a drinks producer & when changing brand/order they'd go up in throw in another few bags of stuff into the big tanks, might've watered it down also. this was store brand stuff

but even in biscuits & knock off bars you can taste the difference. complete the order & change ingredients. same stuff in different packing is a myth

doesn't mean it's not as nice, just depends on taste &or finance. like I'm not spending over €7 on barrys tea when mcgraths in Aldi is about third of the price

The point about going to so many different shops is something people don't seem to think about.

They are spending money on petrol or diesel and general wear and tear on their car that they never factor into their supposed savings.

Some people on here seem to drive to the shops or a few different shops every day. No way they are saving money overall by doing that.

And that's before we take into account the amount of time wasted. Time is money.
