Xtra-vision like amnesty to woo old posters back?

Not sure if everyone reading this remembers Xtra-vision, a lot of people forgot to drop back Games, Videos, Consoles, DVD's etc. It got to such a point that most of the country owed them something and wouldn't go back in. They eventually had an amnesty and welcomed everyone back. It didn't stop them from collapse but it won a lot of us back with a clean slate that some of us respected.

Should boards do the same, a great reset to speak, everything is forgotten, you'll be judged on your next post not your last.

We need more users active users, threads that should be hopping are ghost towns. Call of Duty 6 anyone?

Is it time to welcome people back and give a second chance unbound from what has been?

and yes before anyone says it he's included.

    I admire your optimism.

This will just become a rehash of several feedbacks on moderation and bans. A resounding absolutely no way from me.

The drop off in numbers is not down to cards and bans and rules. The Internet just isn't a fun place to hang out any more, and the wonderful posters this site needs to come back were not lost due to their own (lack of) discipline.

    It didnt save Xtravision!

A version of it happened on CA with thread bans. And how many of those let back onto threads have since transgressed...

I dont think anything more than that is needed.

Site needs fresh blood not bad blood.

The dropoff is mainly due to demographics. Once peak-boomer age is reached, the early onset dementia starts to set in which eventually leads to the forgetting of all passwords and usernames.

Not everyone that's not here was bad. That's why I'm suggesting an amnesty. The Journal comments section and Reddit just aren't the same. It's no Instagram or Facebook but some people don't care about impressions or likes. X is great for information and news but not for robust discussion.

How would you even go about getting fresh blood, the current generation has an 8 second attention span. Disappearing threads?

Fresh blood doesnt have to be young ... new users can come from different demographics.

If its an ammesty that suggests they are not here cos of site bans and Im not going to say they were all bad but they must have had several strikes against them. They may have been banned for trolling, personal abuse.

If they are allowed back, that could cause bad blood with the posters here who were subjected to that first time round.

You're like me ma, people don't change! I'd mainly agree with her, I'd like to see the experiment regardless though.

There will be a glut of old posters available from Saturday morning.

The rot set in when the whole internet was made available on smartphones...

You've shared your out of the box idea.

    Mine is:

Ban posting access on mobile access to Current Affairs, Politics, Conspiracy Theory forums... the post quality will go up 50% and posters will have more time away to cool down and consider things.

(Technically this is likely not practical but just flying a kite on it)

Cut access to boost numbers, it's an interesting plot twist to the thread.

Better quality content may attract more people in the long run.

Some other put out there ideas...

Boards could add an optional "Exit Interview" feedback form for those closing their account.

Send a summary email with title of top thread in followed forums to accounts inactive more than 2 / 4 weeks or somesuch.

Rather than try to lure banned posters back with amnesty, try to reel back in inactive ones.

Are we ignoring the elephant in the room?

Forums and threads started becoming ghost towns around the time of the site upgrade.

Maybe an announcement to previous registered users saying the site has been fixed, please come back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,175 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

I didn't specifically say banned posters, people could be triggered by anything, more of a welcome back, your history is irrelevant. Xtra-Vision would still serve you but you'd have to pay something off your bill.

Exit interview, lol, how about a holding cell where you get battered while waiting for your account to be closed. Would be comedy gold..

You've confused me now. Who other than a banned poster needs an amnesty in order to post again?

I think ‘old habits die hard’…is a reasonably accurate idiom.

My own guess is that maybe 20% of people might have matured / wised up, but I’d say the vast majority would just fall back into old habits…

The wums / contrarians, multi user account holders..

Do more bad then good imho.

Well lets start with the merely inactive users and see how that goes. Can they be reeled back as per LambshankR... Boards is open for a second chance.

When unsubscribing from a mailing list you might see a list of reasons why. With a box for comments. A web form of that could be sent to posters requesting closure.

Sometimes the holding cell is to stop them battering anyone else... maybe best to keep it private or it'd be used for settling scores

How many people had buckets of warnings, infractions etc but not necessarily banned that just went feck this. Maybe even people got the hump about what way the site seemed to be leaning, it's never been heavy to the right but it swung a lot to the left at stages, I feel it's a bit more centred now.

I've nothing valid to contribute to this thread.. apologies!

It was just the mention of Xtra-Vision that brought back so many memories.

    Please carry on.

Business was bad for the shopkeeper, so he decided to give all the barred shoplifters another chance in the hope that they might pay in future…

The story The Scorpion and the Frog springs to mind.

Then no amnesty necessary. They could come back any time if they just act like adults and keep to the rules. An amnesty won't change the political leanings of the site, though banning some people might have.

This 100% - the site upgrade was a total disaster.

First off, the site itself was down for like two weeks due to the technical issues which put off casual posters like from coming back. I just stopped checking the site and then just forgot about it for months afterwards.

Secondly, the upgraded UI/UX was absolutely abysmal to the point that the site was barely useable for a long time afterwards. Personally, I still very much dislike the upgraded UI.

Also the lack of mobile app is an obvious killer for user engagement, I still don't understand why the killed off the old 3rd party app after the upgrade.

If anyone wanted to come back they just re-reg anyway, which I'm sure happens a hell of a lot.

Hard no. They were banned for a reason and that was continuing to cause problems despite multiple warnings and escalating sanctions. We've lost a lot of good, wonderful posters but the undesirable ones will just rereg because they've nothing better to do apparently.

I've been here since 2001. I'm now old enough that I have nowhere else to go. Reddit is just confusing and a mess. I like the organised layout of a forum. It's more readable if you will. As for TikTok. Would you go away out of that. YouTube is for watching videos! I'll need to start buying beige coloured clothes soon and maybe a pair of slip-ons. I've always fancied myself wearing a flat cap.

This site deserves to die. The sooner the better. Either that or it should make it completely clear that it's not for discussing controversial topics. There could be a place for a site that offers advice on forestry plantation, TV soaps, the latest premier league matches, pro wrestling etc, but if they aren't prepared to allow free discussion on controversial current affairs subjects from serious posters, then they should be clear about that and shutdown the current affairs forum
