What does it say on NBI website when you enter your eircode? Any sign of distribution point on a pole nearby?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,608 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

NBI website saying Oct - Dec 2025, which has actually been moved back, as it used to say July 2025.

It says my nearest broadband connection point is 10km away.

I haven't seen anything else added to any poles along the 1.5km stretch of road which runs along the front of my home. What does a distribution point look like?

Below is just for reference how my timeline for NBI has gone so far.

    NBI Journey below:)

Summer 2023 - Surveying . Can’t remember exactly but met a guy from NBI on the road looking at poles etc. It was circa July/August 2023. He said to me that day it would approx 18months/2 years before I would be connected.

    January 2024 -Trimming Hedges

March 2024 - poles erected in area and some replaced also

October 18th - got email from NBI that I could pre-order (It said I would be connected within 45 days of putting pre-order in). Pre-ordered straight away!

Late October - sales agents from providers calling to house with their offers etc

29th October- Guy from TLI came to survey how it would be brought into house. I had it ducted so was able to get it almost to the house but duct was blocked where it entered house. He advised they may to do a bit of digging. If duct was’t a runner , they were willing to worm it up the lawn. Don’t be afraid to ask for this if thats what you would prefer to overhead. Also one pole would need to be erected at road by my entrance.

5th Nov 2024 - Civils came to put cable in duct & brought cable to outside wall. They had to dig last few metres as suspected they would to find where cable was stalling. Did a very clean job.

    14th Nov 2024 - my pole erected

Today - 21st Nov 2024 - my fibre cable slung to nearest distribution point

29th Nov - date my provider has scheduled for connection. Fingers crossed

It has been a long journey but finally I get some fibre of my very own. Installed this week. NBI had been saying H2 2025, but here we are 🙂

Ah right, yeah I have seen them over the last few years locally for those roads luckily enough to have fibre.

I don't think there's any of those on any pole along my road yet. Will get another look today.

Once they start to appear along the road, does it mean it's imminent?

    Here's a question I haven't seen previously asked….

Is the ONT able to be mounted "outside"?
I'm toying with the idea of mounting it in the ESB box where the phone ducting comes in as a plan B.

Plan A would be to feed the fibre up from there into the roof space and terminate in the comms cupboard.

Thank feck that sanity prevailed in the end and the 5G option lost out.

The question has been asked here previously but the answer is no, the unit isn't moisture/damp proof.

Running the cable into the attic is the better idea, and if you could have a pull rope/cord in place, this makes it easier for the installer on the day.

My brother has already done this, maybe last year and his rollout date is 2026

    Possibly pre-order stage.

Sometimes the fibre cable has yet to be connected at the exchange, the final part of the rollout before going RFO, ready for order.

I've the old phone cable that can be used as a pull cord to get it both from the road to ESB box, and then up into the attic.
    Hopefully that will do.

    Should do.

Also I doubt it's the ESB box, they won't allow anything other their own equipment in there. I assume it the small telecoms box, the ETU.

    You might be right.
    I'm only going by memory…

Yes. In my case , DP was installed in the pre-order stage. Approx 6 weeks ago.

DPs were put up on poles along my road last week (my post on it below), but we're in Network Build status and I'm not due to be connected until April-June 2025. Hollyford DA.

Ok, so perhaps I got excited a little too early.

It looks like this year is out of the question. Hopefully it'll not be mid to late 25 like the NBI website says.

Odd situation in Kerry laneway where poles were "being refused". All premises required to order fibre connections before duct works will proceed. Minister explains,

NBI have advised my Department that they have faced challenges in connecting the laneway that the referred premises is located on which has affected the anticipated connection timeframe. When a routine appointment took place, it was identified that an additional survey appointment was required, in addition to 2 private poles and 1 private duct being needed to connect this particular premises. NBI are presently not in a position to provide a date for when civil works will commence.

Neighbouring premises further down the lane, have not ordered fibre broadband with a Retail Service Provider, and with poles being refused on this laneway the connection would need to go underground (via duct). There is a significant amount of work to be completed to bring service to the other premises before the connection can proceed, this work will not progress unless orders for fibre broadband are placed.

Cost probably exceeds the allowed €5000 per premises thus requiring all premises to sign up to justify the cost

Our area was surveyed in mid 2023 and following the survey an NBI engineer had to get permission of landowners to install new poles inside the hedgerows, including my brother's.

As far as I'm aware no landowners refused.

Poles were installed last month, some on the hedgerow, others inside.

Pity if it ends in a stand-off. Property rights are still sacrosanct here it seems. Roll-out would never get done if NBI had to mediate every neighbours' quarrel - perhaps legacy "issues" as well.

In the meantime, perhaps the 'Yes' people could jointly subsidise the excess cost of the ducting past the 'No' people.

It's unfortunate that telecoms didn't have the same statutory wayleave as the ESB. A right that was extended to SIRO when they were created via the ESB's involvement.

    Hi,

Our family farm in Meath is down as pre-order now on the NBI website. The status only updated on Thursday the week before last, so it's only two weeks this coming Thursday.

Vodafone were very fast out the blocks with a sales rep going door to door, however we still don't qualify with either Eir or Virginmedia. Do some ISPs get early access to the NBI database?

I'm kind of waiting for switcher.ie to update to see all the available offers before we pull the trigger so I'm refreshing all the sites everyday.

I assume it takes 3-4 weeks for all the info to refresh? Any experience?

All onborded retail providers will have equal access to the NBI database on a fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory basis.

Vodafone has just got out of the blocks faster than the other providers.

Best option is to wait for your area to go RFO, ready for order, and look at all retail provider options. No reason to order early, fibre is on its way, and miss a better offer once you can place an order.

Just to be aware not all retail providers are available in every area by choice. Smaller providers may be selective where they offer their service.

Distribution Points have been installed on telegraph poles on my road this week.

My connection date is January 2026 to December 2026 though. Seems a bit odd.

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes.

Predicting Timmy for the Dept of Communications now, there's hope yet for 5G NBP 😅

NBI recently making planning declarations/applications for islands in the West; Donegal, Mayo, Galway.

Microwave links on "stout wooden poles" mostly.

The site on Arranmore is up with some very strong, very steel towers for RTÉ 2RN and Highland Radio. I suspect no wood there.

edit: yeah, they're looking to replace an existing mast - Highland Radios - with a 30m steel tower

Hi, just wondering if anyone in similar situation. In Thomastown deployment area, south kilkenny. Area went ready to connect Dec 2023, DP on pole outside house, our house is last on a cul da sac. Ordered fibre but in Jan 2024 nbi went back to showing Network Build Underway july 2024 and the fibre order was put on hold for my house and neighbours in cul da sac, all other local areas ready to connect.

Rang nbi and they said a DP on a pole needs to be moved for a neighbour who are closer to start of cul da sac, as it is on the wrong pole, a railway bridge between them and DP and apparently can't run fibre connection to house under railway even though fibre is passing under already.

July goes by and nbi updated on their site to Jan 2025. Apparently openeir has to do the work as not on a nbi pole.

Just wondering if anyone in this situation and if it was sorted. Waiting a year now for neighbours DP to be moved, nbi said it would only take few weeks, that was a year ago. Also, would DP outside my house be live, can I ask NBI to update my eircode to ready to connect if DP of neighbour is never moved and Jan 2025 passes. Just so frustrating it's outside the house, but can't place an order, thanks

We'll find out now how quick they are to repair broken fibre - tree down across one of the main feeds from town here, multiple rural customers will be affected. (I'm still on WISP, waiting for the last 400 yards to mine to be ducted)
