Okay, I’m sorry. My intention is not to troll, I am just a passionate travel fan and admit I may have been projecting routes that personally benefit me onto an indifferent public. I will reduce my activity here.

Now my turn to eat humble pie. I thought it was AL who operated the journey. Am I right to say it operated for 2 seasons only. Any idea on load factors?

EDIT: I’m referring to Astral Nav’s post above. Sorry I forgot to add the link to Your post.

EI only have a single aircraft that can operate DUB-CPT. (EI-DUO) I was still with them back in the early 2000s when the idea was floated. It was quickly ruled out based on aircraft availability. Back then DUB-LAX was only a couple of years old.

Is there any EI chance of a CPT route? Thought EI was primarily focused on connecting North America and Europe??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭WishUWereHere

Purely my thinking on this: I go to CPT at least twice a year. While I accept that there are many European airlines ( BA, KLM, AF, Emirates, Qatar, Lufthansa-there may be more ) I don’t see the numbers on any flight I have taken to justify a IRE-SA route.

Most likely not for another several years at least. They would need to upgrade their fleet to do so, and for the meantime will most likely focus on DUB-USA or maybe YVR for A330 expansion, I wouldn’t rule it out in the long term, especially if they could feed in passengers from MAN/EDI etc. but expect them to focus on TA routes for the time being

Again I’m no expert but I cannot see IAG allowing AL feed SA traffic through Dublin. BA fly to three different SA destinations on a daily basis with ( I stand to correction)the Joburg flight on an A380.
I’d love to see a CPT direct flight ( personal reasons) but I also cannot see AL permitting a passenger permit 2x23kgs luggage too, which the 2 ME carriers allow.

Ethiopian via Addas would be competitive and comfortable

I saw on the slot report that LAS is a ''new route'' for S25, does AL have the 330 capacity to extend this route to year round or are the 330s already flat out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 187 ✭✭Touristx73

That is true, unfortunately I don’t see it happening for another several years, though even with less baggage allowance, many would still prefer the convenience of a direct flight, I’m not an expert, but I don’t see them extending outside North America for the forseeable future

Aer Lingus are running the route October-April, to allow for Easter holidays. The start of the airline summer season is technically the end of march, so there are some limited movements during the summer season. But it’s mainly a winter seasonal

The newer HGW 300s would happily make CPT with no performance penalties.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭WishUWereHere

That certainly would be a shorter flight. But are we sure ETH are going to fly into Dublin? Also I don’t know their luggage allowance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 187 ✭✭Touristx73

Yes, but do they have enough to focus on leisure routes like CPT. I’m not an expert, but they would most likely focus A330 expansion on cities such as Phoenix, Austin etc. maybe Vancouver or extra frequencies to SEA/SFO/LAX, as they know their market. I doubt IAG would allocate these aircraft to South Africa unless Aer Lingus significantly expands their long haul fleet, or maybe to JNB to feed into ComAir’s network, like BA does, but this would very much be years down the line. I would love to have a route to SA, but for the forseeable future, AL will most likely focus this on North America, where they know their market very well. Never say never, I’m not an expert but Aer Lingus doesn’t expand long haul outside North America for a reason

It’s not certain, but they mentioned recently that resuming flights to Dublin was on their priority, alongside Amsterdam, Lisbon and a few others, subject to slots, which they have now received, so it seems very likely, it can’t be 100% guaranteed though until summer season

Where is Irish Steve when you need him to put a ban on CPT talk like the LAS ban!?!? 🤪😉

I’m puzzled: when did Ethiopian ever actually fly to Dublin? I always thought Dublin was only a stop off for refuelling & they couldn’t take on passengers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,186 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

You could well be right, i know they stopped for an hour or so, but i am/was assuming they took additional/offloaded pax. Curious now myself

I see you are ignoring Tenger and keep peddling your nonsense. Could I ask you to take a step back and be mindful of the fact that most regular posters here know a thing or 2 so no need to lecture us on the basics.

They did fly to Dublin from Addis Ababa which was a technical stop off, but they carried passengers from Dublin to Los Angeles (KLAX) and Washington (KIAD) circa 2017/2018.

Both flights departed DUB circa 6.30/7am.

Apologies California Dreamer. I never meant to bore anyone.

Yes, they had fifth freedom flights on the ADD-DUB-LAX route, when they dropped it in 2018 they instead did DUB-MAD-ADD, which was later rerouted as DUB-BRU-ADD

What have I done since the warning, other than say that Aer Lingus won’t focus their long haul fleet outside of North America for the forseeable future, which is commonly accepted in this thread, Tenger said to stop suggesting outlandish routes and disrupting threads, neither of which I have done since.

I know when the summer season starts and I know it's winter seasonal, that's not what I was asking. I asked if AL had the 330 capacity to extend it during S25.

Ethiopian's DUB-LAX service had much nicer timings than the Aer Lingus route.

You could do most of a day's work on both the outbound and return dates, rather than arriving (and departing) in the middle of the afternoon.

Ah my apologies, not too sure on that one, maybe someone more in the know can answer

Is it time Aer Lingus looked east? There’s surely demand for flights to Southeast Asia, whether for winter sun, holidays, or visiting friends and relatives (VFR). A schedule like Dublin to Hanoi (HAN) on Day 2 and Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) on Day 5 could work, especially if they partnered with travel agents to offer 7, 10, or 14-day packages.

Bangkok (BKK) is an obvious choice, but why stop there? Kuala Lumpur (KUL) and Phuket (HKT) could target holidaymakers, while Manila (MNL) could capture VFR traffic for the large Filipino community in Ireland, maybe stage length getting too long here though. A daily flight to key destinations in Southeast Asia could really open up new opportunities for Aer Lingus.

is there any open source information about passenger flow out for DUB that connect to get to South East Asia, I know GDS providers have it, but I assume that all private / paid for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 187 ✭✭Touristx73

I’ll preface by saying I’m not an expert, while flights to those destinations would see strong demand, it is unlikely Aer Lingus would fly those routes for several reasons:

    1. Poor product, many Asians carriers such as Thai Airways, Japan Airlines, Singapore Airlines etc. have a much better product and on board experience than Aer Lingus, so many would choose to connect, especially for a flight that long
    2. Poor hubbing geography, Dublin isn’t a good spot for connecting to Asia, as it’s a backtrack for pretty much all of Europe, in a region with arguably better carriers like KLM, Air France, Lufthansa etc.
    3. DUB Hub, Aer Lingus’ priority now is funneling European passengers to North America and vice versa via DUB, which explains destinations like Indianapolis and Cleveland, which don’t have much O&D Irish demand

IMO, in the near term, Aer Lingus isn’t going to go east, maybe they could fly to Doha because of their new partnership with Qatar Airways and Qatar owning almost 20% of IAG, but that’s still likely a long term prospect. I could be wrong, but maybe some people in the industry or working for Aer Lingus could answer too. There is demand, I agree, but for now, Asian carriers coming to DUB seems most likely

yea you are probably right, would just love to see it personally. I agree their product is sub par to any of the gulf carriers, actually nervous at the prospect of them flying to Doha, would be such a downgrade from QR metal.

that said as someone who flies a lot, I’d go direct if I can at all, I’d take ei over qr if it didn’t have a layover
