Woman who accused Conor McGregor of rape wins civil case

    https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clyrxl00151o

Well done to her for pursuing this case.

Mod: Victim blaming will not be tolerated as per the forum charter.

To be clear - drinking, partying, entering a hotel room etc is NOT justification for assault and rape.

Posters are entitled to disagree but the legal definitions of rape are clear so no amount of invented scenarios will change them. If you want to further discuss consent or the laws regarding consent, start a thread on it.

20th April - thread title updated to reflect the expanded discussion

So what happens him now? Pays over some money and that's it? No conviction?

Did she have consensual sex with his friend after he raped her?

I've never seen someone go from such a lovable rogue at the top of his game with the world at his feet to being utterly despised by everyone (apart from fake patriots on twitter).

You'd hope people will boycott his products and pub, I doubt it though.

Yeah I thought they'd both be found similarly.

Burden of proof is a lot less in a civil case so yes no conviction.

First they came for the socialists...

Will/can a criminal prosecution follow now? I actually thought you'd have to have a criminal case conviction before you can take a civil lawsuit for damages forthcoming from a criminal action?

Who pays for the legal fees for the victim?

It will end up cost him mutiples of that. The case was nearly thre weeks on his own and NH legal costs will probably be up on half a million euro.

Doubt he would win or want further attention on this matter

She's awarded €248,000 but no amount of money will make her forget what that toe rag did , what a scumbag

The DPP decided not to proceed with a criminal trial because they felt there wasn't enough evidence.

The threshold for guilt in a civil case is lower.

No civil liability has a lower level.of proof. Criminal is beyond reasonable doubt while civil liability is what is the most likly thing to have happened

So did the DPP get it wrong?

I'd say you're right. So can we legally call him a r**pist now or are we open to damages?

Her speech outside court was powerful. No way this woman is anything but sincere and truthful. 6 years of a long hard battle, and she has been vindicated and believed

And he said when giving evidence that he's paying the other accused guys legal fees

His fans tend to be cut from the same cloth, so I doubt they'll be phased by this verdict. It might even raise his stock, in their eyes.

Wouldn't believe anyone's version of events tbh.

The partners of these people are pathetic.

RTE news : Masked men invaded Nikita Hand's home earlier this year

    whose partners? Which people?

A jury in a civil trial believed her. That’s what matters to her

The DPP were reluctant to take the case as the evidence just wasn't sufficient. In a criminal trial where a custodial sentence is the penalty the evidence must be beyond that which is required in a civil trial. Had the DPP pursued the case and Mcgregor was found not guilty it would have been the end of the matter. She may have been advised that her best chance of a conviction and compensation was a civil trial, which has been a success. To a certain extent I think it gave Nikita Hand even more credibility that she pursued the matter regardless of the DPPs position as it shows how determined she was to have Mcgregor held accountable. I for one am delighted she has triumphed. Maybe Mcgregor will now reevaluate his behaviour and become a role model for his children and those other kids that look up to him only time will tell. For Nikita Hand I hope she can move on and rebuild a life for herself.

McGregor and his pals would probably put €250k up their noses on the weekends..!

I expected that if she won her case she'd get millions not pocket change..

What happens with James Lawrence? He wasn't found to have assaulted her, so he'll have to pay his own costs (which McGregor will cover) but will Nikita Hand have to pay her own expenses there or is it just considered a joint case or how does that work.

Partner as in Conors wife and her boyfriend, propping them up and supporting them when they were out riding and doing coke, its pathetic.

So what if a civil jury believed her, doesn't make what happened true it just means they believed her story, the burden of proof is much much lower in a civil trial, nobody knows what went on really and I wouldn't believe any of them.
