D/L seems to be the best option, IMHO it will give greater visibility to the Navy rather than in some other east coast options. Some folks here better understand the ‘politics’ of a mixed use harbour (not simple I’d say) but if it is to be Carlisle I would presume the facilities do not need to be extensive , in the beginning at least?

In terms of accommodation there is CBB about 30 mins away, there surely is space there for dedicated, secure naval facilities. Depending on the scale of ambition over the medium to longer term there seems to be vacant space in the harbour area. However for 2025 let’s hope we see the vessels actually stationed in D\L and get a move on with this initiative.

DL to CBB in rathmines during peak times is a very slow drive.

    Reverse commute though, no?

And for logistics items like munitions and provisions, that doesn't seem to be an excessive distance.

Why would they do it at peak times anyway? Munitions and the like can and should be moved by road overnight.

But I can't see it even arising. The P70s will be stocked with 30mm and 7.62, and will rarely consume them, except for target exercises. When they do need replenishment, it will far more likely happen from a visit of a larger NS ship, who will have brought the ammo from Haulbowline

is it confirmed that they are going with 30mm? Besides it’s not like they can’t go down to Cobh if needed.

Did I hear something about 30mm there?? 👀👀 spill

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,428 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

True that. One supply run a year would be enough.

I have heard from different sources that the 30mm bushmaster with one or other of the remote station options on the market will be fitted.

I mean they will have to be drydocked in Cobh anyway for their annual inspections and the like so no reason not to handle munitions then.

If it is one of the bushmasters does that suggest they have been picked for the secondaries of the rest of the ships I wonder?

I'm loving all the positive thinking about DL being some sort of Haulbowline-east, but until you see what actually is agreed and what actually changes, I'd keep my expectations very modest indeed. There is a general election coming up and it's local politicians clamouring to give out this good news. Take everything you read from commentators online with a large pinch of salt.

I'm expecting a couple of portakabins.

Any timeline for the remaining boats?

An article from the announcement of the contract in early 2022 said 'end of 2024', so fair enough.

Fine boats for the job. Hope they have a very safe and successful service with the Navy Reserve.

Handy lookin piece of kit !

So what's their function? Yard patrol boats are constant-operation things over here in the US, not associated with reserves only. Is it something like a surge capacity for security in case of conflict? Or is it really more a basic seamanship training thing, and they're YP for the sake of calling them something?

Work boats, for harbour and close inshore tasks.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,884 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

OK, but if they are specifically for the reserve, the implication then is that those harbour and close inshore tasks do not need to be routinely (or at least constantly) done?

Primarily, but not specifically for reserve duties. Like all assets, used as and when required for what ever task needs to be done.

probably for fishing from….. be handy spinning around Dublin bay with a few lines of feathers hanging off the back fishing for mackerel.

Keep them inside the Dun Laoghaire peer fishing for mullet when the weather is bad

The motor launches will be based in the Ports of Dublin, Cork, Waterford/Belview and Limerick/Foynes.

They will provide a platform for training and service of Naval Reserve units into the future, and will perform security patrols in the major ports, perform inspections of commercial, revenue and fisheries regulations, offer a platform for Customs and Garda operations where required, assist in security and policing of large public events, assist in search and rescue using the digital comms system delivered as part of JCOP, operate as a Naval diving platform in the Ports and river estuaries, and where necessary, mount two 7.62 GPMGs and embark up to 12 armed personnel.

Money well spent, when a light littoral boat like that will do a job perfectly rather than tasking a larger patrol ship.

moreover a worthwhile long overdue investment if it regenerates the NSR and supports the NS.

Half surprised they don't transfer over the 2 customs cutters that are being retired ,

In all honesty, with so many patrol shops tied up, it would be hard to argue for their usefulness in the short to medium term.

As it is, the motor launches will be drip fed in, and probably be underutilised anyway for at least a couple of years.

The Customs Cutters have a good spec, they'll find buyers on the international market and Revenue will get a few bob back on them.

ya, the big benefit is it could get young people interested in the NS, greater visibility if active units are maintained with taskings and exercises. No point having them though unless worthwhile and regular work (with the funding) is put their way.

Looking how the UK are dumping ships that have been parked up due to costs. Is there a chance some accountant in goverment is looking at Niamh and her sister and thinking the same thing?

I think the NS would want something more than empty soundbites before they would be willing to let them go even if they never use them again. I mean it’s somewhat different for the U.K., the frigate was dead on its feet, Albion needs a chunk of money and both she and Bulwark have lost some of their roles with Ocean gone and the Nordic Front now massively changed.
