10km tail back this morning. Into Moycullen village and onto the bypass.

    If a vehicle is 5m long + 2m space ahead + 2m space behind..over 10km stretch =  🧮  1111 vehicles queued and uncosted exhaust fumes..

City needs bus lanes inbound on most approach roads.

Barna inbound is regularly at a standstill also in the morning

    As is tuam road

No amount of extra bypass roads will fix it - it's a problem of density (or lack thereof). Cars take up too much space for 1 person

How do you fix a problem like the coast road to/from Bearna? Where would the bus lanes go?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,734 ✭✭✭timmyntc

Plenty of room in people's gardens - which is exactly why it will never happen. That route will always be choked with traffic, and it will get much worse as building picks up in Barna and Furbo

You could do something like this:

    image.png

Make it one way so that Galway bound traffic follows that loop, one bus lane and one car lane, and Spiddal bound traffic goes through Barna on the current road, again one bus lane and one car lane.

Between there and Kingston Road the road could be widened by CPOing agricultural land and strips of gardens. No houses would need to be knocked. Kingston Road and the Coast Road could also be made one way to facilitate bus lanes without needing to do CPOs. But there is also capacity to widen both without knocking any existing dwellings, just taking garden strips.

Work to commence shortly on the cycle lanes for Ballybane Rd and lights for Ballybane Rd/Castlepark Rd junction. So say signs newly erected on the road.

long long overdue. so much space on both roads to put in facilities for decades now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,544 ✭✭✭✭zell12

Salmon Weir Bridge will be partially closed 😏

there'll be lane closures in place Monday 2nd, 3rd, 4th, from 9am to 5pm. And again on 9th, 10th, 11th. Experts will be examining all aspects of the structure, including the arches from underneath using special pontoons

It really is an easy win here, so many use that road for access to industrial estate at one end, ATU at the other, access to primary schools in both Mervue and Renmore, sports pitches etc. Off the top of my head, there’s only one pinch point there at the Ballybane road bus stop, where the path is narrow on both sides of the road for about 100m or so.

Ughh, I hope the challenge is addressed swiftly.

Very disappointing. There's a reason he is no longer part of the hierarchy of the Galway Cycling Campaign…

Reading the article, it sounds like it's because an out of date design approach was used, which provides for pedestrians but not for bicycles. If that's correct, then it's a problem which needs to be fixed now, not later. (The lack of cycling provision in the Parkmore Road work is equally baffling.) Two wheelers need to be part of our overall people-movement infrastructure.

And I'm saying that as someone who has very little sympathy for cyclists! I just want them off my footpaths, and grade separated to reduce the amount of gorey accidents.

It looks like genuine issues and design details have been raised. I just hope it's not perfection getting in the way of good.

Hopefully the project is so far advanced that they make the design tweaks as needed and don't throw the baby out with the bath water. The delays are frustrating, progress is painfully slow in Galway.

That is correct but the same is true of absolutely every single road 'improvement' in Galway in recent year. They are all in breach of the rules regarding pedestrian and cyclist accommodation. They are supposed to get a written derogation for this but it's unclear whether this actually happens. They block freedom of information releases on this for spurious reasons.

The fear here is that, if this challenge is successful, the most likely outcome is that the Council will take the position that compliance is impossible within the physical constraints and the whole Bus Connects project will be shelved.

Personally, I would prefer to see an imperfect project that significantly improves public transport for the city, even if it doesn't work so well for people on bikes, than to keep the status quo. It might be counterintuitive, but I think there are many within the 'cycling activist' cohort who feel the same.

Unfortunately that's exactly the fear, that perfection is the enemy of progress.

Its a difficult one, I am 50/50 on it. Galway City Council have been such bad faith actors on public transport, cycling and walking for decades. Cross City BusConnects is not going to do much for people on bikes at all TBH. I think most people acknowledge that. Could a legal challenge like this force City Council to put in cycle facilities on Sean Mulvoy and Moneenageisha Road for example as part of BusConnects? Same for One Way streets. Merchants Road - a two way cycle way?

Parkmore Road is a very good example as listed by Mrs O Bumble. A scheme built in 2024 which makes cycling to and from Parkmore even more challenging and difficult now. Public transport has improved marginally - really just the provision of bus shelters over the inbound bus lane. Probably biggest "winners" has been for people on foot with some junction tightening and additional pedestrian crossings. At most one would give it a "D" grade.

Personally I think the proposed Cross City Bus Connects will just copper-fasten the East v West City divide when it comes to cycling as an every day mode of transport. The CSO stats don't lie to the current situation.

Did something happen? Traffic is bonkers at lunchtime. Sean Mulvoy & Tuam Road blocked or maybe it is a normal Monday 😕

Also seeing massive clog to enter city from barna and n59 too

Really would have to question why this kind of work is done this time of year. Daylight alone mitigates against the duration of this type of inspection work. Reeks of "Gotta use the budget up" by end of year.

What is causing this? No explanation given.

    Lack of available drivers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,544 ✭✭✭✭zell12

Council car parks not accepting cards anymore - either coins or the app. No reason given for the shift

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 599 ✭✭✭rustyfrog

Is that the same for on-street parking?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,544 ✭✭✭✭zell12

It should be all P&D points
