Doubt it's official, seems to be using dlvr.it to auto post every article from the website

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,384 ✭✭✭corkie

To be able to use the domain as a handle, you need to add a TXT record on the official domain. So would be hard to make an imposter account. Using auto posting from website was probably done on 'Xitter' as well.

I created a Bluesky account earlier this year. At the time I looked around and it seemed to mostly be American accounts - many that were in the arty/liberal sphere. Spotted a few accounts that had left Twitter years ago. It was interesting but I didn't even think of fully switching over because hardly any of the accounts that I really liked on Twitter were over there - especially Irish and UK accounts.

That has changed and has done so dramatically in the past week, as far as I can see. I saw so many accounts that I follow posting messages on Twitter saying they were moving over to Bluesky. I decided to log back in and now I really could find lots of accounts - especially via those helpful starter packs. Over the weekend I didn't log into Twitter at all and solely used Bluesky as a trial run.

    Positives

    • No blue check mark accounts spewing hatred and disinformation in the replies.
    • No porn bots liking my posts
    • Looks and feels like Twitter from about 3 or 4 years ago
    • The curated "Discover" timeline is a lot better than the "For You" timeline on Twitter

    Negatives

    • It doesn't seem to have a trending list - or even the concept of hashtags
    • They don't seem to have verified accounts so there's been a bit of confusion around whether some people are who they say they are (The Polish PM Donald Tusk joined for example and some people weren't sure if it really was him). Obviously that's no different to Twitter these days where the concept of Verification has been rendered meaningless but it is different from old Twitter.
    • Still a fraction of the size of Twitter (but it's growing rapidly)

I'm going to use the two of them in parallel for a while but I'm hoping that Bluesky can reach the critical threshold where I can switch to using it full time and finally delete my twitter account.

@Brussels Sprout If you have your own domain. You can self verify your account with a domain handle. Like TheGuardian has done or like this shower @pbp.ie

    https://clearsky.app/pbp.ie/blocking

They are already blocking finegael account.

Probably not who you think as 'High Profile' or 'Celebrity' status but: -

Follow Up post in thread: -

So I’m off to Bluesky and I’d encourage the almost 45k followers of this account to do the same.

Think I may have already said he was on it and not limiting replies yet.

Edit: - Looks like Michael McNamara TD closed his account, don't know if he joined an alternative platform. He changed to @McNamaraMEP at some stage.

Was there a post a while ago about Google removing an embedded twitter feed from results when searching for famous people etc?

It seems to be back anyway, probably been back a while but I never took any notice

Theory! :- Is the Irish Examiner going to follow The Guardian and leave 'Xitter'?

    https://x.com/irishexaminer

Last night they posted more news on 'Threads' than on 'Xitter'. https://www.threads.net/@irish_examiner

And today they flood Bluesky with posts in their first day of actually posting on the platform. https://bsky.app/profile/irishexaminer.bsky.social

I know they are probably automated scripts to post content from the website?

Edit: - Using the following service to do so. And not cheap for the amount of traffic they put into it today. https://dlvrit.com/pricing/

Also noticed jerrybuttimer.bsky.social account created tonight. So brand new that clearsky is unable to show joining date or time. He called my gaff on Saturday but I went out while he was in the area so didn't get to talk to him.

maybe we could set up a bluesky thread? I joined there myself the other day but not much else at the moment

The quote tweets around Aodhan's leaving tweet are perfect example of why people are leaving the **** hole.

Just noticed Waterford whispers have joined Bluesky btw https://bsky.app/profile/waterfordwhispers.bsky.social

I wonder could I set up a 'NotWaterfordWhispers' account, like reddit's r/NotTheOnion (real stories that sound like they should be satire)

I suppose I could, but I wouldn't have the motivation to build it to anything that might get a following

bringing it back to twitter, seen a screenshot of these accounts earlier…

Just posted my leaving message on Twitter to my 7 Followers 🤣…. and setup a Bluesky

WWN account already has 1.9K followers, so it seems like the moves will only increase?

Lets see how long they take to get back to 245K

Aodhan didn't get the memo, that there was no need for a song and dance about it? 😀 Just for the record and if he crawls back to the platform.

@Stark Had another look at what the quoted tweets where saying. Saw some in my feed. I retook the above shot to include like and quotes count. I wonder did you spot mine as well.

Including the shots as a record and for people not on the platform.

Been reluctant to post here more, because didn't what to give thread traffic!

As if Irish people should care about what he actually thinks.

Was thinking of posting this in the 'eXodus'/'Bluesky' thread. Didn't want to pollute that thread with an 'Xitter' link. And the examiner didn't post a link to the post on 'Bluesky' yet.

As I posted here might as well include: -

There really needs to be more stringent regulation of all social media either at an EU level or at a national one.

It's having huge detrimental effects on society. Idiots who people shunned in the past are now given a platform and a following.

Kids are commiting suicide regularly due to the hive mind bullying. Others can walk 5 steps without pulling a duck face and posting it. The rest don't interact and can't be productive in the workforce as they spend every waking moment either on it or thinking about it.

Something like X should be first to go. There's no upside to it, so just ban it in the EU. The next platform that wants to ignore the regulations gets the snip too. X is easiest as there's no real European workforce involved anymore. Plus it's two fingers to a total prick who's involved in spreading dangerous disinformation. Just the fact that it's known that he's manipulating the reach of this misinformation should be enough to ban it outright.

Bullying more likely from the #BeKind crowd, I'd say...

It'd be Snapchat, Tik Tok and the likes you'd want to ban first, if it's the effect on younger people you're worried about

They certainly need to be regulated more harshly. No printed press could publish what's shared on these forums and not get sued out of existence. There's also an argument to limiting ages of access and time online to these sites. We're already seeing the detrimental effects to our younger population in just a few short years of exposure.

Aodhan O'Riordan doesn't allow replies to anything he says on Twitter (which should not be allowed as he's an elected representative) so he's really no loss to any platform as he just uses it for propaganda purposes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,384 ✭✭✭corkie

I assume you meant to say "shouldn't" ?

He is on Bluesky now and hasn't restricted his replies on that yet. Only reason I follow him, is because he is an MEP.

It should be allowed, don’t like it then ignore him. Maybe he doesn’t want the comments to become a cess pit that his staff have to constantly monitor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,366 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

There appears to be growing momentum for BlueSky. It'll be interesting to see if X drops in usage in Ireland but remains popular in America.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,842 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

But I do ignore him generally.

My issue is it would be better if elected representatives were prevented from blocking responses on twitter or any other social media site.I find him not allowing and response to his posts on twitter incredibly cowardly tells you how beneath them he and other politicians feel the public they are supposed to be serving are.

They don't have to read the responses anyway if they don't like them or if they just want to push their own views without being challenged they can do it from their own website

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,384 ✭✭✭corkie

@Jack Daw I agree with you that public figures shouldn't be limiting replies. But I can understand why they do it. To avoid the trolls and cesspit attacks they get on 'Xitter'. Look back at the screenshots of his last interactions on 'X' for his reasoning!

    Edit:-

Michael McGrath @mmcgrathtd is another person that utilize it, and is to be installed as an EU Commissioner

I utilize that feature on occasions when I am tagging a list of politicians, so they don't get spammed with replies if my posts got attention from them. Example: -

When the politicians do it, they lose control of the conversation because posters could just quote post there tweets?

I have been reluctant to give this thread more traction. But if people are wondering why they are losing followers on the platform. This may be the reason: -

Source where I found that article!

If your interest in the alternatives check out 'eXodus'/'Bluesky' Thread I created.

Edit: - Look who has closed his account on 'Xitter'! Aodhan O Riordain
