Halloween

And so our final category… almost a month too late but still earlier than some Walruses :D

I was interested to see what songs you’d all pick for this round and it’s… well it’s a mixed bag. We have one song entered twice with two VASTLY different versions. A duplicate from two entrants submitting the same song. Some are good but I’ve heard them so many times I’ve become indifferent. Some are new and wowed me… and some I really, really wasn’t a fan of.

Some of my own choices when I think of Halloween entries…

Somebody’s Watching Me – Rockwell

For years I was convinced this was a Jacko song for some reason. Then I learned it wasn’t. I enjoyed it even more!

Halloween Theme – John Carpenter

A bit cliché but a classic imo. I mean the damn name of the category is in the movie title!

Monster Mash – Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett

Again, predictable. I’m nothing if not predictable!

Let’s see how you all fared though, nobody cares about my choices!

The Killing Moon – Echo & The Bunnymen

I don’t really mind this track I just found it quite forgettable. Even when I’m listening to it now as I type I couldn’t recall how it went tbh. The chorus is nice but that’s about it.

Jekyll & Hyde – Five Finger Death Punch

Ehhh… like it’s ok I suppose? For a rock song it’s quite tame given the song name. I expected much more shouty lyrics if I’m honest. The chorus delivers – the rest… does not.

The Banshee – Henry Cowell

This was… definitely an… experience? I suppose it does show music is what you make of it. It actually grew on me a bit as I listened to it a few more times because initially it was rock bottom but this was about as high as I could place it. The uniqueness factor drew me back a couple of times mind you.

I Put A Spell on You – Screamin’ Jay Hawkins

Now this positioning may indeed end up quite controversial but it’s not the version that I think of when it comes to this song unfortunately… I’ll elaborate more shortly.

Ghostbusters – Ray Parker Jr.

Who ya gonna call? Predictabusters! I love this song but I’ve heard it so many many times I can’t in good faith score it much higher than this. Great track, on theme, good entry.

Everybody (Backstreet’s Back) - Backstreet Boys

Another absolute classic I’ve played to literal death. That chorus is so so good still though. Love the video too. Another very solid entry from Liz Carter.

I Put A Spell On You – Hocus Pocus

Yep, so to the controversy… I absolutely adore this version and won’t accept any other version is better… unlike the other round where both entrants of the song scored the same I felt there were enough differences between the versions to rank them separately. Tbh the Screamin Jay Hawkins version would have scored where it landed even without this entry… and anyways, it’s my damn contest so whatever, whatever I’ll do what I want!

Thriller – Michael Jackson

I think other than Man in the Mirror this is my all time fave Jacko song. I don’t listen to his stuff much anymore tbh so this was a nice throwback. It kind of is THE Halloween track outside movie theme songs after all… or so I thought.
