The International Monetary Fund is the source. I won't second guess their methodology. Below is another of their creations, which show Ecuador as a Hard Peg. You can look at the Eurozone map in another post on this page to see the designation of Kosovo.

    ^

They definitely need another shade, as while a country may be hard pegged to the USD they'd still require their own currency for transactions, like Saudi Arabia, whereas there's no alternative to USD notes in Ecuador.

I guess they just dont distinguish between a currency peg and actual dollarization. China had a hard peg with the USD until the early 2000s.

Plus Denmark has a very narrow range it can vary to the euro so effectively it's not a soft peg.

Kosovo used the Yugolasv Dinar until the war, after which they switched to the German Mark, until Germany introduced the euro, then they changed to the euro.

I guess that IMF types would distinguish between unilateral adoption of a foreign currency, and bilateral agreement. The Dollar has a local status in some countries like Ecuador. That local status is what the Peg colour recognises. But possibly only in Panama through bilateral agreement with the USA?

The same in the Eurozone. Euroization has happened in the European micro states and in the French territories, with the agreement of all sides. But it has also happened in Kosovo and Montenegro, Ecuador style, on a unilateral basis. Another colour needed for the Bit Coin, the official currency of El Salvador?

I just went down a rabbit hole reading up about the CFA and its peg with the Euro.

In the West African Franc the plan is to replace it with its own administered currency called the ECO, but without a political structure between the nations who currently use the western CFA it's hard to see become a reality.

Critics of the CFA don't seem to have a realistic alternative as the CFA provides trade stability between its members and with the countries who use the central African franc which is also pegged to the Euro at the same rate.

I had thought perhaps Nigeria being by far the biggest economy in the region might provide some semblance of a competing currency but a quick glance of eur/ngn shows it has been rapidly depreciating in recent years so it's more likely Nigerians will prefer to have a stash of Euro backed CFA in reserve.

Physical map of the Great Loess Plateau of central China. The Yellow River takes a circuitous route around the Plateau.

This region contains deep, massive deposits of fine wind-blown dust off the Tibetian Plateau and has very fertile soils which have been subject to massive soil erosion over centuries - and recent successful efforts to restore the land to agriculture and reduce erosion.

Falerii Novi - a forgotten-about Roman town, which over time became buried was recently mapped using ground penetrating radar. They've identified structures such as a bath house, a market, underground pipes and aqueduct

The city has been mapped onto a saellite image but if you view it on Google maps, it's just farmland…

Is that as bad as the Norway, Finland, Russia tripoint? Three different time zones.

That map represents it pretty poorly imo. It's not confusing at all.

    • Eastern states are one zone
    • North and South both are 30 mins behind
    • Western is 90 mins behind in its own zone
    • NSW, Vic, SA have Daylight sayings and go forward 1 hour for half the year.

It's an area the size of Europe, similar number of zones. The reality is you travel between them by plane, and time zones are practically invisible.

Jesus, Estonia, Belgum and especially Cyprus. If you’re going to make ID mandatory, at least make it free or cheaper like the other countries that require one.
