That's true about bourbon. The the American's don't recognise anyone else's geographic criteria, so doubt their rules could be enforced in less respectable locations. But would be pretty bad marketing.

I'd assume they realised they needed to keep the ABV high to keep the gum label. It also says distilled which means the damsons are added to the still and not afterwards (as per flavoured vodka).

Agree on the Hedgerow gun. It's a liqueur at best.

Any sign/news of Puca in Aldi this year?

Not in the catalogue at least, they have a 10 year old Ardfallen for €30, supposed to be in store from Thursday.

Also, a Two Stacks dram in a can collaboration with DOT Brew, whiskey and stout gift pack for €12.

The Wild Burrow stuff in Lidl. Obviously the damsons aren't going to affect the colour of the spirit if added at distillation stage. So purple colour added afterwards.

Anyone know the difference between Wild Burrow Irish Gin and London Dry? The list of botanicals seemed the same when I glanced at them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,176 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

There no set botanicals for London Dry style gin. But it’s a fair established flavour that most will be something like juniper, coriander, citrus peel, angelica and liquorice.

    Google suggests the Wild Burrow botanicals are;

Juniper, Coriander, Angelica, Orris Root, Orange, Lemon, Blackberry Leaves, Dandelion Flower, Scots Pine, Wild Garlic, Wild Fennel, and Furze Petals

The usual suspects plus local herbs sbd flower. At a guess, it’s probably similar to London dry gin, but with more of a floral/herbal note.

Looks like colour glass, but lots if guns have a colour/tint to them too. Could be adding damsons to the still, and also to the end product. Could just be colour added too.

I was in ALDI (Bayside) picking up a bottle of the 10yo Ardfallen. Haven't tasted it yet but the nose is promising quality.

They had a few Puca still on the shelves, same offering as last year, the regular and the single grain.

One bottle of the Duchas left also.

Thanks for the info. I wonder why they didn't have them in the xmas catalog.. or any catalog at all

Did you catch the prices on the Puca? Last year I think it was €25 for the stout&rum cask and €30 for the single grain

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,101 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

    I didn't I'm afraid.

I wonder if they might be old stock, more chance of them being still at those prices then.

The Ardfallen 10yo in ALDI is an interesting one.

A mix of grain and malt, bourbon and Moscatel casks. Slight tang to it from the Moscatel which I like - I like dessert wines and this is halfway there. But may not appeal to all.

If you are a fan of Dingle Samhain this has similarities.

I took the picture myself, so confident that it's not coloured glass. And the colour just doesn't look natural at all. Looks like methylated spirits.

I'm open to correction, but I don't think distilled gins are anything other than clear, when they come off the still.

Compound gins are different obviously. And here's one I made myself recently, to show the point.

I can't see anything in the regs that exclude adding stuff after distillation in a distilled gin. Could be fruit juice or it could be colour.

The DOT Brew/Two Stacks collaboration from Aldi this week is very pleasant. Quite unusual to be pouring whiskey from a can, but it's a pleasant drop neat at 43%. Glad I picked up two of them so I can enjoy another a little closer to Christmas.

I think mistake is assuming that distilled gins come off the still and into the bottle with no other treatment. Not the case.
If juniper is present during distillation, it's a distilled gin. The other botanicals can be in the distatation, or are added afterwards.

;flavouring substances or flavouring preparations as specified in point (c) of category 20 or both may also be used to flavour distilled gin.

That's my reading of the above too.

I tried a standard two-stacks can on a road trip when I was hope. Thought it was a bit harsh and grainy. But the barrel age might soften it and round it out. Nice boilermaker pack.

I'm sticking with my original educated guess that it's colouring in this case. 😀

interesting that there’s a 10 year old ‘Ardfallen ‘ coming to Aldi ( here !) for €30 especially in these snakey ‘no age statement ‘ days .Granted it probably won’t be mind blowing stuff at the price point , their minimum price scotch ( used be ?) is rolled out as an ‘8 year old ‘ but I guess in ‘equivalent quality / value ‘ terms you’d have to down grade your expectations .Pearse Lyons sells painfully priced ‘5 year old ‘ after all …

Anyway sipping a tiny sample of a UK sourced duty free Tyrconnell single malt .Ive said it before and can reiterate ,they are putting something ‘peaty’( God forbid not their hideous basic Connemara ) in there now .For the laugh I set up a ‘blind taste test’ with it and my almost finished ‘Blackbush’ .I guess it’s not the discerning palate achievement of the millenium but it was easy to tell them apart .Thing is the €26 from Dunnes BB is probably nicer than it’s dearer ‘rival’ also …I used adore Tyrconnell SM but I don’t know now…

By the way with the most wonderful whiskey drinking time of the year approaching I’ve a query .Ive been doing some mild toe dipping into this and it’s challenging me .Is it possible that the sophisticated , sweet ‘grape y’ Irish whiskey I have been craving for the last 6-8 years is in fact BRANDY !?
Now I didn’t rate Jamesons Crested X ( if ever there was a sneaky no age statement label that has to take the biscuit !!!) it was sickly sweet to the point it only served as a ‘cordial’ to which you added basic whiskies
But Teeling Brabazon 1 was an almost religious experience of leathery Christmas cake …

I’ve had a couple of Hennessy’s recently and it tastes nice if a little ‘weak’ / ‘overly smooth’ …so should I stay on the whiskey trail or go French ?!
    ( I don’t think I can afford both so don’t just suggest that !)

Have you tried Lambay or some of the Irish whiskies finished in Cognac or Calvados casks?

    what’s the drumshambo whiskey like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 152 ✭✭DeniG2

bought a few bottles of Black Barrel, noticed the label has changed a bit and after opening a bottle last night I thought it tasted slightly different, more sherry finish perhaps, did any notice similar or was my mind playing tricks on me, still a nice drop all the same

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,805 ✭✭✭2011abc

I tried Drumshambo and it didn’t leave any impression other than being overpriced( and hard to open !) :-( Mild Sherry influence maybe ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,805 ✭✭✭2011abc

Haven’t tried Lambay, worried it might be salty or seaweedy like Islay !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,101 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

No, nothing like Islay, that would be interesting if it was, for me at least :)
