The red flag for a NZL perspective tonight is looking at every blog, podcast, YouTube preview etc…the only argument people can make in NZL's favour in regards to their chances of winning is that Ireland might be rusty…

basically admitting NZL's best chance of winning is Ireland not turning up which speaks volumes of what they think NZL as a team atm. That in itself is concern as watching Ireland over the last 10 years in the autumn internationals the one thing they HAVENT been in the first game is rusty, if anything they started better than they finished so basing a whole prediction on Ireland being rusty is very brave/naive to say the least.

Also interesting how when NZL play this weekend they are battle hardened but when Ireland played NZL in the WC game after giving everyone game time int he group stage they were "fatigued" and when they played SA during the summer they are "tired"…just shows, which is what I suspect, these NZL backers are just believing what they want to believe as it suits their prediction.

I haven't seen or heard anyone writing NZ off. FFS we're just the opposite. Worry is a national past time.

The little details that can make a difference…..

"One thing that sticks out in my mind was something I don't usually do in a four-man [lineout]. I usually put pressure on the number 9 and I decided not to, and then they ultimately scored off it.

"Didn't ultimately lose us the game, but they are moments in the game where you certainly think back and have nightmares about."

    https://www.rte.ie/sport/rugby/2024/1107/1479683-beirne-i-still-have-nightmares-about-rwc-quarter-final/

Beirne is a bit harsh on himself but its still annoying him.

Would love to see a real edge to the Irish team tonight.

    Ireland by 10.

Yeh read that article myself earlier and that quote did stand out. But its understandable. Twas a WC QF and I'd say every player that night has had a memory of the game just like it where they did one thing they normally wouldn't and so on and its eaten at them.

Hopefully they put it all right tonight. Shaping up to be a belter.

I'd say Jeff Wilson is sitting there wondering how it's come to this, that the other guys he's talking to managed to balls it up badly enough that Ireland became a genuine rival to NZ.

There was so many of those moments in that game for Ireland.

Outside of the obvious ones, this passage of pay still really gets me.

63mins: Ireland score a penalty try, Taylor is YC. 24v25

Kelleher comes on. Momentum all with Ireland.

Kelleher has hands on the ball over a ruck. Looks at ref. Knocks the ball on!

(because Smith, who is on his knee, knocks the ball out of his hand)

Cole on for Retallick. Cane moves to lock. Pen NZ at scrum!!!!

    Listen to Barnes afterwards. Pathetic!

    NZ miss pen.

    Drop-out.

Murray penalised "Conor has pulled no.12 off the ball".

    69mins: NZ kick pen. 24v28.

I don't think New Zealand ballsed anything up really. They're still a very good side that don't have quite as many world class players as they used to.

They had a core of players from about 2005-2015 that all had reasonable arguments to be considered the greatest to ever play in their position. Retallick, Whitelock, Thorn, McCaw, Kaino, Read, Carter and Nonu are all irreplaceable.

The All Blacks have done as good a job of replacing those talents as most reasonable people could have hoped. But bar maybe Ardie Savea, none of the current All Blacks squad match up to their predecessors. Beauden Barrett too, but as a 15 moreso than at 10.

To the end of my days, I will never understand why Kelleher broke off and let himself get held up.

Looking at the squad, with Furlong being out, and match-day squad selected, my greater squad break-down would be this:
    Starting Team:
    1 Porter, 2 Kelleher, 3 Bealham,
    4 Ryan, 5 J McCarthy,
6 Beirne, 8 Doris, 7 Van der Flier,
    9 Gibson-Park, 10 Crowley,
    11 Lowe, 12 Aki, 13 Ringrose, 14 Hansen,
    15 Keenan.
    Replacements:
    16 Herring, 17 Healy, 18 O'Toole, 19 Henderson, 20 O'Mahony, 21 Murray, 22 Frawley, 23 Osborne.

    Backup:
    Loose-head Prop: Boyle*,
    Hooker: Heffernan, G McCarthy*,
    Tight-head Prop: Clarkson*,
    Loose-side Lock: Baird,
    Tight-side Lock: Izuchukwu,
    Blind-side Flanker: C Prendergast,
    Open-side Flanker: Timoney,
    Number Eight: Kendellen*,
    Scrum-half: Casey,
    Out-half: S Prendergast,
    Left Wing: Stockdale,
    Inside Centre: McCloskey,
    Outside Centre: Henshaw,
    Right Wing: Bolton*,
    Fullback: Nash.

    * = Training panellist.

    Injured:
    THP: Furlong

For all their woes last week v england, yellow card, tackles without the ball x4, handling errors unlike them.......they still won.

Don't see any team winning by 10, 3-5 pts the max.

They are there to be got at no doubt in comparison to previous teams.

    Draw game

Well they're right about the Irish media anyway. Likes of thornley and Ruaidhrí ó Connor are pretty insufferable

It was a game England lost rather than NZL winning. There were at least 3-4 moments in the game that any good side would have won in England's position, its a game that showed where England were at more than anything…Argentina would have won the game if in England's position for instance.

Strange feeling about the game tonight. Usually before big games there is an emotional energy around the place but I'm not getting a sense of it for whatever reason this time. Hard to put my finger on it.

Hopefully we don't see that translate to the pitch. If our accuracy is good I think they will cough up penalties against us.

I’ve a weird feeling we’re gonna lose this by 8-12 points, not really based on anything except the 90’s Irish fan in me I can’t shake.

    Ireland by 5. Can't wait

Yeah, I was surprised to hear Johnny Holland (I think, RTE pundit) talking about how that match was 2 excellent sides cancelling each other out in many ways, and that NZ didn't really get going because England's defense was so good. I see where he's coming from but I didn't see either side as being particularly great and I thought it was 2 teams that don't really have a game plan to fully execute. England's defense is good but their attack is poor, NZ as ever have brilliant individuals who can score tries from scraps but similarly don't have any real strategy to break teams down and turn possession into sustained and effective attack. And their discipline is terrible, 4 penalties from tackling the man without the ball is absolutely scandalous for a test side. Think about the 1/4 final in the WC, they literally didn't make a mistake.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,122 ✭✭✭Shehal

It absolutely was not two excellent sides! It was, on the day, two average sides trying their best to lose with the side better at it succeeding. All I know is in the last 3 minutes NZL conceded 2 kickable penalties in the same attack, then proceeded to drop the ball 5 metres out from the missed kick and gift a scrum 5M out in the final minute straight in front of the post…now that is NOT how an "excellent" side close out a game…I genuinely would question how much NZL have improved as that performance was that much better than the 2 games they played in the summer versus England.

Not sure what way it'll go

New Zealand were mixed last week and lucky to get the win. It's our first game in a while and we could be rusty for the start. Have a feeling it's going to be a 16-16 draw

Is there a match thread ?

Or on the flip side Ireland will be fresh and NZL will be knackered after a long season & 6 day turn around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,084 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

I don't think so. Their season is pretty spread out. After the England hit-out last week, I think they'll be in optimum shape.

We have a few changes and haven't played together in approximately 4 months. And its turned into a damp night here in Dublin, so more potential for some rusty errors, maybe a lost scrum or two later on.

I'm thinking New Zealand by about 10, but then I lost 50 quid on Kamala friggin Harris on Wednesday too, so more likely Ireland will skittle them!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,122 ✭✭✭Shehal

How exactly, they play more games a month than the games played in the NH plus have more travel?

I think the fact we are talking about rustiness and the shape players are in kind of shows we are in agreement that NZL arent good enough on their own to win this game so are reliant on Ireland to not show up.

So just so I get this straight… the NZ side that won by 2 points against England, despite doing everything in their power to lose, is now going to beat Ireland (A much better side than England) by 10…work that one out for me 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,007 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Cos sport doesn’t always go to form / ranking.

As evidenced by, for example, Ireland - a much better side than England - losing to England the last time they played. Thats the beauty of sport.

We’ll see how it goes, but I don’t expect anything easy 2nite, a NZ win wouldn’t be a massive shock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,122 ✭✭✭Shehal

Well it can happen…the question is what's the logic behind it?

NZ could win, a win by 10 points while not impossible would defy all logic based on what we've seen over the last 12 months..but like you said you never know in sport.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,370 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Band cut off part of the New Zealand anthem apparently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,122 ✭✭✭Shehal

1 minute in and we already have had more scrums on our own put in than we had in the WC game!
