Looking at buying a scales. Was looking at the o Neill one in tirlan, and the S3 package from o Donovan's.

Which would be best or is there any difference. Both are same price.

    cant post links.

    Go with O'Donovan

Definitely not that type of platform from Tirlan, with the upright central division. We have similar platform and they dont stand steady on it for weighing

I don't see any mention of Bluetooth or being able to record the weights with the ONeill. The S3 has Bluetooth and can record weights to an App.

I'm getting an S3 and an ezweigh7i delivered here for testing in the next few days.

Isn't there a TAMS grant available for scales?

If you have a plan to use it alot I'd look into a crate instead of a scales, young cattle are a pain trying to get em used to it. Especially with TAMS

What brand of crate ,prices and grant available

Anyone here have a DIY cattle scales, where you bought a weight cell kit or weigh beams and made a platform to suit

I will back you on that one. Game changer is the word

The s3 is a very basic clock and the blue tooth to the app doesn't record animal id.

Starting to think of looking at Eid for weighing

Do you currently have an S3?

The Agrident/Allflex wands will connect to an S3 scales via Bluetooth. It will be the wand itself that records the weights.

Yep have connected it via Bluetooth to the phone and the trutest app. Tried it twice weighting and gave up with it. Was just quick to record weight with the herd management apps. Must look into the wands as it would really speed up the job

A good few have there are old threads on the subject if you can find them.

We had to repair the bottom of our portable crush, so we added a place to put the weigh beams. The clock we got with it works fine but you really need to wait for the animal to settle down compared with more premium models.

It's worth looking at this one by @Micheal H

I have a few wands to test for work, I'm also expecting an S3 scales to be delivered early next week, so I should be able to tell you how well it pairs up with an Agrident AWR250.

It's worth looking at the AWR250, it would be a lot cheaper than buying a new wand and scales.
BTW you should not be limited to just the DataMars TruTest app, there is a dedicated Bluetooth BLE standard for scales, hopefully they conform to this, but I should be able to confirm that soon too.

What type animals are you weighing? For larger types, store & beef animals, I don't recommend a scale with ridges in the centre / outside in particular. They tend to put a foot up on these and not weigh correctly. I have a Connacht Agri one which is fine and robust. It is a bit high though, so they can take a little persuading to hop up on it sometimes. Also, my pen / crush is slightly wider than the scale itself, so they sometimes ground a foot down on one side or other. Wouldn't recommend either putting it into a mobile-type crush, can be hard enough to push them into it without the extra hassle of them climbing onto a scale.

"Wouldn't recommend either putting it into a mobile-type crush, can be hard enough to push them into it without the extra hassle of them climbing onto a scale."

With the modification I made to mine above there is no more issue getting them in than normal, but also there is no possibility of them putting their feet out the sides either.

Looking forward to your results here.it will be appreciated 👍

The cattle get used of the mobile crush very quickly and it's way easier than weighing on a platform. The mobile I have is placed at the front of the race and every time an animal goes through the crush they have to pass over it. When you think of it with the platform, it's pulled out intermittently and animals get nervous of it and stall. On the mobile with sides they have nowhere to put feet up on it to affect weighting.

A tip for anyone with a platform type scales is screw a cubicle mat to it. It makes it softer and takes away the shine.

Having weighted with both, I would avoid the platform type at all costs

I bought the donovan scales and wand, Everytime I use it I curse the platform as like posters say cattle don't like standing properly on it. In the next 2 years I'd hope to get a condon crate. The time and safety aspect are the biggest things. The wand is a dream though

What do ye mean when ye say the cattle aren't standing properly on them. Do the cells not weigh them no matter how they stand on it.

Cattle sometimes get nervous when they go up on it, weanlings want to turn around so they not standing on the platform and they give an inaccurate weight as they are leaning on the bars of the crush.

Also for older cattle they are the length of the platform so it can be difficult to hold them on the scales for an accurate weight

So the scales fitted square into the floor of the crush ,did you remove old floor in the crush

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,495 ✭✭✭emaherx

No I just weigh the animal and crush together, have to zero the scales before the first animal so only the animal weight is shown.

We did replace the floor as original rotted away and we made channels for the weigh beams so crush doesn't slide around on top.

Some new toys to play with.

On a quick bench test the S3 Scales works with the AWR250 reader.
It's the reader that stores the weights as you already know the S3 scales is basic, but worth a look if you plan on getting an EID wand and could save you upgrading the scales.

A quick inspection of the BLE protocol suggests the device conforms to the standard BLE weighing scales profile, so in theory it should be able to connect to any app expecting the same.

@emaherx I am not very Tech Savvy. I have an Easi Weigh 7i clock with my scales. Also have Herdwatch. What do I need to be able to upload weights easily?

Plenty of testing done alright, but not sure if it's the type of testing that would interest many here. I've been looking at them from a software development point of view. Unfortunately I didn't get to do much real world testing as they only supplied me with a lamb suspension weigh cell so not much use on my own yard, my own weigh beams had the wrong connections to try with.

But I can tell you both the S3 and Ezweigh7i work with the Allflex/Agrident AWR wands. There's not much advantage on using Ezweigh7i though as it can already record weights it's self, but it would be a nice upgrade for someone using the S3.

Can the eziweigh 7i scan the tag too? Or is it manual entry of tag number?
