Trying to get my head around the revenue guide as to allocated losses and gains

    From Revenue Web site

“ Shares sold within four weeks of acquisition

Shares bought and sold within a four-week period cannot be offset against other gains.

You can only deduct the loss from a gain made on a subsequent disposal of same-class shares acquired within the four weeks "

Now here's my predicament I purchased shares 10 days ago held them for 7 days and sold with a gain of €900
On Monday bought shares in the same company and today I'm looking at a loss of €900 approx
Question is what is my CGT liability if i sell?

Sell the shares today and your CGT is still on the 900. You need to hold the shares that you bought on Monday for 4 weeks to be allowed allocate the loss.

very worried for European stocks that have performed not particularly great to begin with, there’s just no light at end of tunnel there

That's what i was led to believe and how i always carefull when buying and selling in the 4 weeks rule but what's nagging at me is my nterpretation of the second part of the revenue advice where i sold at a profit not a loss and repurchased and unfortunately looks like to sell at a loss

I know if I sell shares in company b and sell at loss and subsequently repurchase within 4 weeks I'm not allowed to offset the loss on any gains for 4 weeks my situation is the opposite initially sold for a profit

Hope I'm making sense but it's wrecking our heads here.

"You can only deduct the loss from a gain made on a subsequent disposal of same-class shares acquired within the four weeks "

    They're two different transactions….

"I purchased shares 10 days ago held them for 7 days and sold with a gain of €900"

    • That €900 gain is liable to CGT (so if that's your only gain you're under your annual €1270 allowance, if you're over that, you pay 33% of the €900 - ie €300 to taxman

On Monday bought shares in the same company and today I'm looking at a loss of €900 approx

    • Sell them now, you can't use that loss to balance off. Hold them for another 3 weeks, if you sell them for €900 loss then, at that point you can write it off against the first transaction.

Bascially they don't want you trading.

What a day. Up nearly 5% and I only have solid picks and majority of my portfolio is BRK.B

Massive jumps for me today on stocks and crypto

Tho not happy as little voice at back of head ringing alarm bells this morning

the future now instead of being a clear and bright up and to the right line on the graph is … a circus

I suspect the market expects Trump to pardon himself and play golf for four years but he won’t be able to help himself and I suspect endup sinking one of the best economies in some time

Markets up slightly again today (my stocks anway- large % is Tesla & Nvidia). Wondering if it'll continue or is there a drop coming after the initial reaction?

So Trump is in. He said (I believe) the stock market will be his baramoter for the economy. He alao said he will drill more. Elon is close by so, guess anything Elon owners will benifet. What sectors or even companies are you looking at that might benifit?

I think oil will go down(oil stocks). UK is in bits so ftse will probably underperform

I've a few stock, sitting on allot of cash just like Buffet🤔

As a lazy (buy something) thinking of Glen, BHP,, maybe Ryanair, if prices look attractive

My last buy was intl about a week after their bad earlings. And buying Snap about the same time. I just think usa is overpriced atm.

Palantir has been on a tear lately and looks a bit expensive , but JD Vance being in Peter Thiel's pocket may drive it a bit higher.

Hims & Hers Health, Inc. (HIMS)

Took a small punt on the above @19, getting a lot of traction across media & socials, smashed their recent estimates, it's a stock I feel easy holding and willing to give it a good run.

Crypo is good if your already in. And you don't own/want to sell market moving trades. Personally I got out about 2,yrs ago.. Trump I believe will be positive for some crypto

I'm hoping to be out in 6-12 months. Hopefully market cycle theory plays out.

Just wondering what you did in the end? I also like to offset this loss against another gain.

I did come across some documentation https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/08840579 saying creditors will be paid a dividend but there was nothing about shareholders.

    Hey Boards(ies),
Did you get in before the degeneracy began?
We are at the review point only 9 months after the first post here which resulted in over 100% gains.

Selling some here to pick up Black Friday bargains.

Well done, what a great shout. Massive returns!

I'm tempted to cash out my portfolio at the moment, it feels like there might be a pullback from the big gains of the past couple of weeks once the markets calm down. But who knows, Berkshire at least seem to hugely increasing their cash float.

The over excitement is on the crypto side which I’m selling as fast as I can (but damned bad timing tax year wise)

There is some bleed over into tech stocks as over last few years crypto became very very highly correlated to tech

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,148 ✭✭✭littlevillage

Yep, kept most of my portfolio in stocks and funds and they are all humming along nicely. (Somewhat strangely Energy and Irish banks are black spots, but that was possibly down to my timing of the buys).

A few doomsayers on here moving their full portfolio to cash, must be kicking themselves at the growth they have missed out on.

Anyone playing the time the market game will be kicking themselves sooner or later; personally I'm investing exactly the same amount no matter the direction of the market because in 20+ years time it will not matter (and that's when I really care). I'm sure some will do better than me in that time but it's a fairly stress free approach that lets me sleep at night and I don't have to try to swing my you know what around to prove I'm the biggest and the baddest of them all.

Kinda looking at BHP.L again, below £20.00 I feel will pay for itself…

Re-entered BASF today. I don't think their latest results warrant the drop we've seen since.

Great jump in SHOP, been a long time coming and in finally way back in the green with them.

Had a f*cking howler with Shopify. Was preparing my CGT losses for next year and wanted to lock in gains in Shopify from the past few years, sold Monday afternoon, with the idea of buying back, didn't get a chance to buy back Monday evening and by the time I loggd on Tuesday it was up 22%

Missing 1 day invested is costly!

    😥

Don't know if there are any CNBC fans here but two that have mentioned alot recently are Reddit and Leidos. I am also keeping an eye on Grab and Peleton.

    Any opinions on these??
