Forgot to mention this last night.

In the match day program both the President (Brendan Foley) and Ian Flanagan (CEO) paid tribute and thanks to Graham Rowntree

Why was this match not shown to a wider audience? There must have been many Munster supporters unable to access the streaming channel it was on. Did RTE/VM even PS offer any money to cover it?

I don't know, but the most likely explanation is that no, they didn't. Mind you, not like RTÉ were showing anything particularly interesting at the time and sports is a big draw. Can't imagine it was done deliberately to drive Access Munster subs though.

That’s just Someone in PR doing their job. It’s all about the “brand” nowadays and how to milk every last cent. Rugby is further down the agenda and results show that more than Rowntree coaching…

Burns stayed on until 52mins, he was clearly injured & could kick to touch let alone conversions, I can't understand why he was left on

Having said that he could pull performance in a few weeks time but since he arrived his overall performances have been v poor....Will give him the benefit of the doubt til xmas.

GGreen shoots in some positions which is great to see, overall tho we are in a chronic position front frow wise going forward, look at the age profile of props & nothing overally promising coming thru.

It's not all doom & gloom, we'll keep driving on.

The gap between the top teams & us is creeping wider apart every year.

That needs to be addressed & it's a long term plan.

Overall I highly enjoyed last night's game, nice buzz around the place

You don't think we have issues at LH & TH & the calibre of their replacements?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,248 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

I think the problem is the transition to those guys.

I think one only one has a senior contract and the rest are all academy? We've John Ryan, Archer and Kilcoyne all 35-36 who we'll be transitioning away from. Loughman and Jager are solid. Salanoa is perenially injured and Josh Wycherley hasn't quite pushed on as much as we would've hoped.

A signing for 2 seasons or so could be really useful while those guys come thru.

It’s professional sport, and a results based business.
Munster cannot compete with clubs that buy in the top International talent every year in key positions: front row, tight-head lock, and top-calibre outside backs don’t get produced by top clubs that often, usually they buy in what they need.
For Munster to generate enough of a following to keep the turnstiles flowing we need to be challenging the playoffs in both the URC and the European Cup every season, and getting close to winning one or the other every couple of seasons, and win once in a while, maybe every 5 seasons.
realistically that won’t happen without maximising the squad, and once injuries hit which seems to be a perennial curse the results tank.

Higher profile clubs can absorb injuries without completely disintegrating, and even thrive on giving the replacements a chance to shine.

We are towards the middle of the scale in terms of resources, so our replacements will usually be a noticeable step down, without a majority proportion of the team being International quality it doesn’t give the replacement a chance to contribute much, as it becomes an inevitable firefight to maintain parity.

There seems to be tipping point where just enough quality is present that a few replacements can slot in without much change to the success of the team.

Hopefully the injury list clears up soon and we could get back up to a competitive level.

Munster have confirmed that no terrestrial TV station was interested in broadcasting the match, that's why they went down the route of streaming it via Access Munster

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,913 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

You have to wonder about RTE sometimes.

They will show plenty of club football over the weekend that only really interests a parish worth of people, but wouldnt cover the Rugby on saturday evening when there was no other live sport on.

They were showing Zulu on TV which, while a great movie, does seem like an odd choice. I don't really get it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 26,504 ✭✭✭✭phog

When they cover rugby they often present a very negative image of the game, like I know they have to call it as they see it but they're also selling a product, EOS is often one of the most negative you'll find. Talk about shooting themselves in the foot.

In fairness to RTE, they had live sport broadcasts in Dublin, Derry and Tyrone this weekend so they were likely just maxed out.

As Munster themselves point out, there’s a “significant cost” to showing live games that has to be absorbed by someone, even if we assume that Munster didn’t want to be paid for the rights.

Virgin might have been interested as an appetiser for their AI coverage (I think they showed the last one?), but apparently not.

The only real problem here was the lack of a reliable stream on Access Munster.

I wonder if the game had been midweek would it have made a difference?

The priority changed, yes. I assume they saw the success that the school system was creating for Leinster

Difference is the schools in Leinster are mostly private, Blackrock, St Michael's, Castlenock, Gonzaga. While the schools in Munster are mostly public, in fact I can't think of a single voluntary school in Limerick known for their rugby.

This creates a huge funding gap that probably would have been covered by the clubs had Munster decided to instead prioritise. Instead we had historic Limerick clubs struggling to put out underage teams because the schools were allowed to panel the players

Munster have always been a majority schools team, at least in the pro era. 12 of the 15 home grown players named in the 22 at the HC final in 2006, played senior cup. 8 of those 12 went to private schools. The rough and tumble bunch of club rugby lads winning the HC is a myth, half the homegrown players were private school boys and the vast majority went to legacy rugby schools.

Yes but the point I am making is where Munster prioritised

in the lead up to the 2006 final it would not be uncommon for an underage player to play for their school mid-week and their club at the weekend.

Now the schools have full rights over the underage players and most, if not all, ban their players from participating in the club game

That is not true of Cork - more so in Limerick I think. In Cork if you were on your schools Junior or Senior team you never played club rugby at weekends.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,213 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

They have no idea what they're on about. There was always a form of paneling of players in Limerick. When I was in secondary school in Limerick in the late 80s/early 90s it was in place. AFAIR it used to only be in place after Christmas for the schools season, but that changed 10-15 years ago to September to March.

And the schools don't just decide to not release players. Paneling of players is a rule endorsed by the branch.

Interesting, mind you, how many rugby secondary schools does Cork have by comparison to Limerick? Sounds like it was definitely more of a problem up North

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 4,992 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

You are wrong. In leinater in dubljn it's always been the way that the main senior clubs didn't field at youths level at all. Many for years didn't even bother try(some are much better now and use them to bring others into club and or keep some from schools involved in club)

The funding gap is there and that can't really be replicated in same way by clubs who have so much more to fund themselves.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 4,992 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

That isn't true and I was playing age grade at 16s/18s in the time period around when Munster were winning European cups and Limerick kids weren't playing schools and clubs like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 606 ✭✭✭TheSunIsShining

Yeah. I played Jnr and Snr schools and nobody on those teams played with clubs. Although there are some issues now with players not panelled or involved who schools won't allow play with clubs either through being told not to. Although, and I would agree, it never happened back in the day either....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,191 ✭✭✭mun1

Schools paneling was introduced in a smaller format in 1988.

It has had various formats based on dec-march, spent-march and then full season .

At least its now easier to get a player removed from a schools panel if their parents choose, and they can go back to play with their club.

The Munster schools cup teaches players to win rugby matches, doesn’t focus on developing players to play rugby.

We need to get to a place where all players go back to playing with their clubs after school as the dropout is only getting worse.

Kleyn called up to the Springbok squad to replace Nortje - best of luck to him!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 954 ✭✭✭Rugbyf565

How long is Abrahams out for? Liam Coombes and Patrick Campbell are basically permanent hospital patients at this stage, need replacements for them next season. Would also like to see Kleyn shipped off for someone who doesn’t play non-Irish test rugby.

I think someone mentioned it previously but they'll really need to weigh up keeping Salanoa. Front row options for Ireland are worrying when you look at the age profile of the present encumbants.
