Met him socially a couple of times - an absolute gentleman with a wonderful sense of humour.

I had the privilege of having dinner in his house one night back in the early '80s. Dinner was scheduled for 7 30 or 8pm, but it was well after 10 pm before he got home—something about a crisis in Dail Eireann between Garrett and Charlie! Supper was fascinating, listening to his review of the day. A lovely guy, gone far too soon. RIP.

morning ireland is 40 years old today.

They played a recording of DDP recalling how there was resistance to the show from the higher ups in RTE and it got no budget or very much assistance from the powers that be at the time. When you look at what it replaced (usually Mike Murphy with a bit of news and views a la BBC2 Terry Wogan) you get an idea of the mindset at the time. It was soon followed a few years later by a longer dedicated evening news show as well.

    RIP

One of the broadcasting voices of my childhood (and beyond) on Morning Ireland. I wasn't really able to tune into much of the coverage of his death last week, but it did seem fairly sparse (?)…given how much a part of RTE he was.
