    Castle Clinton. It's a circular fort that was built in about 1810 (at a time of rising tension with Britain) to defend the port of New York against a possible attack. it was built on an artificial island. For many years it served as the principal immigration depot for the Port of New York until Ellis Island was opened in the 1890s.

    The 2020 view above shows it as still being on an island in 2020 but I'm pretty sure that's wrong; the area around it was reclaimed in the late 19th century and it is now within Battery Park

    I never heard of the Frost / Ice / Snow Line until the Solar System programme on BBC tonight. Outside the Line, water cannot be liquid. And Brian Cox also showed the Triple Point at which water can exist in its three forms. Where the right combination of temperature and pressure obtains.

    Earth is in this Triple Point, uniquely in the solar system. And Brian Cox speculated that a Triple Point might not exist anywhere else within thousands of Light Years. Complex life probably needs Triple Point conditions.

    I'd say that's partly due to the fact that the wages are much lower to start off with, in most of the countries with a high percentage.

    Except for the Netherlands, it would have been a good plan to get a pension there, but it is too late now.

    The difference in Ireland the UK seems strange, as the state pension is lower in the UK, wages are a bit lower too but the ratio should be more similar.

    The other issue is non core allowance for pensioners, free travel, energy allowances etc.

    just looking at the figures, and i'm not sure if i've read this right - the minimum state pension in PT per month is €319.49 and in ireland it's €266 per week for the non-contributory?

    I assumed the map included private and state employee pensions (guards, politicians,teachers, etc) as well as the basic OAP pensions and all other incomes (shares dividends, rental etc) and averaged the value of all of them among the population. The map relates to net income, not just pensions.

    The caption on the map is Pensions Replacement Rate, and that has a specific definition.

    Definition

    The net pension replacement rate is defined as the individual net pension entitlement divided by net pre-retirement earnings, taking into account personal income taxes and social security contributions paid by workers and pensioners. It measures how effectively a pension system provides a retirement income to replace earnings, the main source of income before retirement. This indicator is measured in percentage of pre-retirement earnings by gender.
