We should stick with Summer time i.e. longer evenings darker mornings

I believe it was originally for agricultural work, people started work at whatever time, say 7 a.m. and when 7 a.m. became dark they change it instead of starting at 8 a.m. so more daylight hours, something like that anyway

So yeah of course we could get around it now in modern society just change working hours if daylight is truly needed, except I bet some groups would want compensation due to disruption and change of contracts etc...

    Change is difficult for many

Polls on this are always overwhelmingly in favour of staying on summer time but it never happens, pointless discussion at this stage

    No it wasn't.

It was a measure to conserve coal started during WW1 by the Germans.

    Blame the Kaiser.

It's bollocks but unlikely to change here anytime soon, largely because the UK who we share a border with won't change in tandem with us. It would be an extra pain in the hole having two different time zones on a tiny island.

We should keeo the change every year

I am quiet happy with the way it is. It never bothered me. Works just fine.

Keep it as it is and I hope it never changes.

If it's not broke don't fix it.

    Peace and long life.

"The evenings are too long" argument really only applies for about 7 weeks in June and July. Bright until 22:30 in the West is undeniably a bit bizarre.

But your idea of sticking with winter time would be a fail in April, May, August, September. Like it would mean Easter, mid-April next year, would have sunset just after 7pm. The May bank holiday weekend sunset would still be before 8pm (in Dublin anyway). The surprisingly nice month of October just gone would have had effective darkness before 6pm from the start, and by 5.30pm mid-month. That's all pretty miserable scenarios for most of us, just to get around an issue in the height of summer.

In truth there is probably no great solution, what we do at the moment probably makes the best of it.

Being in the Southern Med region is an absolute gift in December/January. OK it's darker in the mornings, but sunset is after 6pm in December/January. That really helps with well being and mood. Am looking forward to it now. I bloody HATE the early dark nights here, it's fkn endless. But since there will be no change, I go to where it's better for me. No wonder they live forever in these places.

Son is severely autistic. Plays havoc with the kid. Up for special school every morning at 6am for a month until he adjusts.

Our geographic location determines that changing clocks is the best option.

Staying all year summer time means that it will not get bright until close on 10sm in the morning in the dead of winter.

That has a huge effect on people working outside, agriculture, construction, etc, and people going to school.

Not to forget that frost will take an extra hour to clear in the morning.

The idea that it will free up extra daylight in the evenings is not as promising as it sounds, as the weather is usually poor in the dead of winter so there is not much that can be done outside.

The alternative of all year winter time is just as bad.

One thing I love about the summer is the very long evenings, taking an hour off them would be a shame.

And it would mean it would be brighter earlier in the morning, so in mid summer it would be bright at 4am or earlier, what use is that to anyone.

In short daylight in the morning is more valuable in the winter, daylight in the evening is more valuable in the summer.

The one thing I would change is restrict winter time to a shorter period.

Why wait until the end of March to go to summer time, it could be done in mid February.

Go on, completely ignore the geographic difference between Ireland and the Southern Med region.

Yep, it’ll be brilliant in the Summer when it starts getting bright at 3am said no one ever.

Yes I know it's closer to the Equator and they change their clocks back and forward like us. But it doesn't change the fact that sunset is two hours + later than ours in Winter and although constant sunshine is not guaranteed, the temps are always at least 10celcius higher than ours on a bad day there in December/January too!

My point is that longer evenings in Winter are great for well being.

Those sunsets are still a lot later March to October than most people would experience around the world, and they seem to be able to get on with their lives just fine.

There's no perfect way unfortunately. It's just a matter of opinion.

The advantages of not changing and later daylight are many

Healthier as the changes cause illness due to the the disruption of sleep patterns.

Nuisance in changing clocks, watches etc. everywhere. Some forget and you can't be sure of the time for weeks.

Healthier as people would stay out later in the evening due to extra light after work walking.

Reduce crime as much occurs after dark falls.

    Increases business.

Anyway those who start business early with the sun can still do so.

We don't know that...all the ones it harmed could be dead from the harm or locked in their basements sitting in a rocking chair gradually trying to nurse themselves back to societal integration with special lights that mimic natural sunshine and shitloads of vitamin d supplements

Nobody has any consideration for Icelanders in general, but especially marginalised Icelanders with SAD or SAD adjacent mental health issues....its a crying shame, their own kind treat them like absolute **** and force feed them the worst of the Hákarl. You'd have to see it to believe it.

I really hate the clocks going back for winter time. Hate it getting dark at 5pm or earlier. 😢

I thought that winter time in the EU was to be abolished? There were plans to do so but nothing has happened yet...

Spent 7 years commuting across thw country so it became unnoticeable after a while.

I get up early either way, don't like staying in bed.

Brighter mornings much better for mental health. Also think about this, the evenings stop losing light around the 14th of December and by the 21st have already gained about 2 minutes of light, whereas the mornings are still losing light until the Solstice on 21st/22nd and they remain stuck and do not start to brighten until into the first week of January.

''In 2019, the European Parliament voted to remove daylight energy saving time permanently. The initial plan was to stop seasonal time changes after spring 2021. However, this was put on ice due to the Covid-19 pandemic.''

    Did something change

This is the same Bull which starts this time every year. We (Ireland) have no say whatever in what happens in this country. There is a European directive which states

EU legislation on seasonal clock changes The current directive entered into force in 2001. Under its provisions, all member states switch to summer time on the last Sunday in March and back to their standard time ('winter time') on the last Sunday in October.

    https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/policies/seasonal-time-changes/

A EU Directive can only be with the agreement of all member States including Ireland. And those dates are the ones we always used. Other member States agreed to change their dates to fall into line with ours. Every member State chooses its own time zone. Sweden and Finland are in different zones. Spain and Portugal are in different zones. So the idea that Ireland and the UK can't be in different zones is nonsense.

At present there is nothing stopping us from making our time 2 hours behind or 2 hours ahead of what we are on. Or any other clock we want. And if it comes to choosing a permanent time zone in future, that zone will be entirely our own choice.

Not better for mental health according to this

SAD is a condition that can intensify during the clock change. With shorter days and reduced exposure to natural daylight, individuals with SAD may find their symptoms worsening. The changes in sunlight can lead to mood changes, decreased energy and heightened feelings of sadness and fatigue.

    Isolation

Clock changes and earlier sunsets can have an isolating effect on individuals. With limited daylight hours, outdoor activities and social interactions may be limited. You might be more inclined to stay indoors, leading to a sense of isolation and social withdrawal.

    Depression

The clock change can disrupt sleep patterns and the body clock. These disruptions can contribute to an increased risk of depressive symptoms, such as persistent feelings of sadness or suicidal thoughts.'

I think those who wish for all year summer time will be disappointed when it's not getting bright in the morning until close to 10am and the weather is too poor to do much outdoors in the evening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,276 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

We should stick with winter time i.e. shorter evenings brighter mornings

Increases business? During the height of summer everywhere except pubs and fast food restaurants were closed by 5 or 6pm. It's a really bizarre culture for outsiders to see everything closed in broad daylight and a terrible look for tourists.

The same people who go out walking or running or playing sports will do so anyway. The lazy ones who use the dark as an excuse to sit on the sofa eating crisps will still find an excuse. They can also walk in the morning before work.

Where are the statistics for reduced crime and increased business as it relates to the clocks changing? Or did you just pull that out of your rear end?

Sunrise is roughly 8:40 is in winter. Even at that you’ll see the sky brightening well before that.

So just add an hour on. Surprised they’ve not changed it for climate reasons as more lights be used at 4pm than 9am as all kids gone to school. A lot of people gone to work so demand is down
