Seems like most games they cover from Dublin and the odd big game e.g Liverpool/ Man City they'll cover from the stadium.

So, it's common sense to be against all gambling because some people cannot handle it, but it's not common sense to cover female sports on a national sports radio shop?

Your version of what's common sense and mine are 2 very different things.

And OTB have built their brand (successfully) on being an engaging sports radio outlet. I don't know if you've looked around you over the last 15 years or so, but the views they seem to hold are very common within Irish society, and you think it's part of some brand strategy? It's a very blinkered take. I mean, they don't even do anything brand related to these views, they just express them, your argument makes no sense.

And accusing them of some form of hypocrisy while holding such opposing views on funding support from gambling companies and women playing sport is just an exclamation mark of how ridiculous that argument is.

I've never taken to the OTB live commentary shows in the same way I used to enjoy Premier League Soccer on Today FM back in the day. Don't know why that it, ostensibly, they're the same show but I used to love the saturday show for years and used to regularly have it on as background noise but never have done the same really with the sunday commentary games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,249 ✭✭✭dominatinMC

Agree with this! Was only reminiscing about Premier Soccer Saturday with a friend the other day, great show.

Even though Premier League Saturday only finished-up a few years ago, I guess the Premier League was slightly less ubiquitous then compared to now, and we didn't have as much content/coverage. Also, for me, I just find the Premier League less interesting in general now, very few characters, clubs have lost identities, etc. I think that all feeds in to my indifference towards OTB sunday commentary.

Helped that it was a Saturday, you had a load of time on your hands, the night to look forward to and everything was great.

Sport takes up a lot of the day for a “fan” and Sunday is one where there’s not a lot going to be on in the evening and you might have dinner with your parents, or the in-laws, on.

Been hearing that for awhile now, mostly from ex-Man United fans. Decent title race in the League of Ireland at the minute, not as easy to get tickets for games though. Still, worth checking out.

Ya I've found myself watching a few LoI games lately, not bad at all.

Also, a Leeds fan for the record! We're maybe even more despondent that Man U fans..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,612 ✭✭✭Felexicon

Definitely not. Leeds are great to watch and the Championship is box office. You never know what will happen in any game.

I'm a United fan and my aul lad is Leeds (he was pissed when I told him this in 1992) and I find myself watching more Leeds games these days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,977 ✭✭✭✭EmmetSpiceland

Leeds fan here, as well. There’s, certainly, been highs and lows but that’s all part of it. Last season was tough.

Still, the Championship is a decent slog. You do get some good games. I’ve been keeping an eye on Plymouth a bit, as well. They’ve never been in the “top flight”.

League of Ireland soccer has come on leaps and bounds, the added European tier has helped. I do have a fear that if the new owner of United manages to turn things around and the club start winning again the ex-fans will flock back as if nothing had happened.

Would be great if ‘Off the Ball’ covered more games but you’d have to wonder is there an audience for it for fans who don’t follow the teams playing? Having reporters at the grounds giving detailed updates and goal descriptions during the show is something everyone could get behind.

It should be relatively easy to do as well - it's one night a week and only, at most, 5 grounds to cover, with usually a couple of games in Dublin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 868 ✭✭✭FazyLucker

Lads, I don't know about you but I'd have no interest in listening to 90+ minutes of a commentary of any match. I think live commentary is yesterday's game in general.

If people care enough about the match, they'll see it for the most part.

The problem with Friday is it is a pure dead zone on the radio. Nobody who can do anything else is listening to OTB on a Friday, which is why the likes of racing is covered then - because nobody is listening.

On another note, Richie is no longer going to be doing The Newsround, so those who have been perpetually angry at his mic since Covid times will need to find a new issue to rant about……(I'm sure it won't take long to find it).

Flicked on OTB last night as was driving.

I was listening to some lad who wrote a book talking about Ohio and LeBron James constantly. I must have been listening to it for about 10 minutes before it ended but I still couldn't make out what the hell they were talking about. Kept talking about Ohio and leaving Ohio and then some airy fairy stuff about places and people moving away.

Seems Eoin Sheahan is the new main guy. I can't warm to him at all. He has no charisma and his voice is grating. That monotonous voice and tone…you want a smooth as silk presenter like a 1 litre petrol engine. Sheahans voice is like a Massey Ferguson 135 in comparison.

He always tries to be intellectual and 'read between the lines' of what people say, such as that interview with the lad on about Ohio. Read out a part of the book on about places and analogies with sunsets and roadtrips.

I stuck through the Sean O'Brien interview. Really dislike that guy. He pissed on someone in a pub in Dublin and has made loads of money from the refugee industry the last few years. He was talking some amount of shite. Talking about how Doris is a big game player and the bigger the game the better they are. Doris has consistently bottled it on the biggest stage. He becomes a knock on magnet. Seemingly O'Brien doesn't remember against NZ in the world cup when after the ball was held up, the resulting drop out he knocked on the relieve all the pressure.

Sheahan seemed to find it astonishing that Julie Ann Russell does cross fit saying "I'm not sure there'd be many footballers doing crossfit". She's not professional.

oh god more Ann Marie doing the newsround.make it stop

Phew, that "find a new issue to rant about" took even less time than I expected! Kudos……

On Eoin, I don't mind him to be fair. He's not as good as Joe (who is) or Will (also excellent) but he's a street ahead of the rest of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,249 ✭✭✭dominatinMC

Ya Eoin is decent to be fair. Definitely the best of the rest and far superior to some of the other alternatives who I'm happy didn't get the main gig, i.e. Richie and Shane Hannon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,040 ✭✭✭amlinopta

How has he made money from refugees? In a syndicate that owns pubs and part of the Leinster coaching team.

Champions League night and OTB doing deep dives on Kerry Ladies GAA boardroom politics. Are they trying to go out of business?

You're right, footbally never gets a look in on the show. Been that way for the 22 years they've been doing it.

Hardly ever hear it mentioned do you? I think I heard they say something the night Liverpool beat AC Milan in Istanbul, but it was only to mention that Steve Finnan's sister was a better right back.

I recall he was listed as one of the receivers of substantial sums to house IAPs.

I would prefer to listen to Will or even Nathan though Nathan has his annoying parts aswell.

Yes, the fact that it was saturday was a big help, especially in the darker winter months, you could dip in and out as they had the previews from 2-3 and the after match call in from 5-6. Also TodayFM in general was a much better radio station then, there would be a decent music show on at 6 (although PLL ran for almost 20 years so there would have been a variety of shows at 6 in that time). They tried to keep it going with Saturday kicks but eventually just abandoned those interested in sport for more of the same stuff from 7-7. At least we have 2 nights of block rockin beats now.

I wonder if it was also down to the commentors who were excellent - Ron Jones did the last one as far as I recall, and a few still pop up on RTE/Newstalk doing "around the grounds" snippets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 150 ✭✭Novfith

Having Ann Marie get involved in the discussion reminds me of being at work and that guy that doesn't like sports trying to be part of the conversation about sports.

I remember she called Gregor Townsend, Gregor Townend. Not the biggest deal but shows the lack of knowledge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,112 ✭✭✭keeponhurling

Joe’s new podcast at Irish Independent is pretty good and it’s free, at least for now. He talks about similar topics and similar guests as at OTB, just transplanted to another station. A seamless transition for him.

He also does a version of Slight Tangent called “Bits and bobs”, whereas it appears OTB have binned Slight Tangent.

I cancelled my €10 per month subscription to OTB. I might sign up again in future but want to see how I get on with only free stuff for a while.

And yeah, the constant pushing of the cash machine is starting to annoy me. One of the perks of paying the subscription is supposed to be no ads, but I just see cash machine as an ad within the show.

If Champions League night means that much to you why aren't you watching it instead of hate listening to a radio show. Maybe you like the misery! Sad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 24,207 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

I'm surprised at how much like OTB it is, same structure, same guests, same topics.

Now, you wouldn't expect it to be completely different, it's just each time I listen to it, I think of just how similar it is. Joe must be doing well financially which means it will go behind a pay wall at some point, or OTB dropped the ball in not being able to find a way for him to continue there.

I'd imagine Independent journalists are no longer appearing at all on OTB?

Dan McDonnell definitely gone with Joe. Looks like Ruaidhri O'Connor may have gone as well, Thornley on Wednesday night rugby for the last couple of weeks. Not sure if there were any other Indo journos on OTB?

Might not need to go behind a paywall. The point of newspapers having podcasts is twofold - attract money from ads/sponsorships in the pods themselves, but also to drive readership on their website and get subscriptions there. So if they can take in enough money from ads and can see an uptick in people reading the Indo online, might be good enough to keep it free.

Apart from Joe & Ronan Mullen (not that one), everyone else is already working for the Indo anyway, so it's not going to cost them massive money to run the thing…
