What do you know of the audience? There's up to 130k tuning in. Too many snowflakes here constantly looking to be offended.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 327 ✭✭sub3wannabe

How many of those are DRL Waves fans?

People see these type of diversity and inclusion initiatives as an irritant more than anything. It's not enough to put you off waiting for their actual interests.

Earlier in the week the appointment of Tuchel as England manager was cut short so that they could discuss Jonas Eidevalls dismissal. It went from a hot topic of significant interest to most football fans to a complete irrelevance for most.

Is it your View that people's enjoyment should be diluted in order for more "progressiveness" to take place?

The reality check is that you've a thought process still stuck in a 1970's mindset.

Womens professional football has grown massively in the last 15 years or so. So too has rugby, cycling and other sports like boxing and UFC. Events are seeing much more exposure and interest which will lead to more and more interest and participation

And literally 50% of the planet are the target market opportunity for these sports. And this can lead to increased market opportunity for business who serve sports markets, including talk radio.

It's not only embarrassing to be dismissive of this but shows you have no concept of considering the opportunity for growth through having a larger market reach.

Womens sport will probably never be as popular as mens in the same way that mens fashion magazines will never be as popular as womens. But only an idiot would argue against catering to or trying to grow the interest.

What triggers you by female sports getting exposure? Do you find it emasculating for some reason? Because that's what it screams about the people on here who get upset to see it getting coverage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,007 ✭✭✭Murdoc90

Nonsense, I dont particularly care how many races are on at the Curragh but does it irritate me? No. Someone listening is interested. If you listen to a sports show expect sports news and updates! And if diversity and inclusion irritates you, the problem is more than likely you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 327 ✭✭sub3wannabe

You hit the nail on the head when you made the comparison between an inherent difference of interest between men and fashion magazines. It will always be niche for both for obvious reasons. The fact that it has to be constantly subsidised into focus proves this. If you're so confident of the growth potential then let it stand alone. You know well it would fall on its arse. Why must we have to have our content of interest curtailed? How about you put the womens content on before / after. Let's see how that does.

The fcuk are you talking about?

What's 'our content'? Do you own the sport? The station?

You're just one misogynistic listener who is one of tens of thousands of listeners on any given day. In todays world you and your likeminded buddies have no shortage of safe spaces on podcasts from around the planet where people who break in to a cold sweat when they hear of Caitlin Clarke or Sam Kerr or whoever being mentioned gather to tell each other how women should stay out of their sports conversations.

You are missing the point. It's not the diversity and inclusion that's the problem. There are plenty here that would love to paint this as angry misogynists raging against progress but that's not it. It's about dedicating time to sectors commensurate with the level of actual interest, not what they think we should be interested in.

If they decide to go off talking about the Norwegian tennis league or other sports that are only of interest to chronic gamblers and a handful of others I'd say the same. Indeed I remarked the same about RTE and the outsized prominence it gave to horse racing while Colm Murray was there.

You can frame it if you like as growing the audience and expanding reach but that's hardly going to be effective. The show has acknowledged from previous non-sport interviews and times where they felt that the audience needed to be educated that it's listeners are largely men in their 20s and 30s.

I don't listen to the show as much as I used to, the whole protect Stephen Kenny no matter how bad it got put me off. He lasted a lot longer than he should have due to his support from the Irish football media tbh. A courtesy I see they are not extending to HH.

We aren't talking hours being dedicated to the womens game, The main gripe on here seems to be its included on bulletins and score updates. The radio show must be touching 30 hours a week, it probably gets the time it deserves as the game grows. Lots here said they've turned off, or don't listen as much as they used to yet their listenership is growing. Content might not be for you but to think people must not be interested in something just because you aren't, is incorrect.

commensurate with the level of actual interest

What do you think would be a commensurate level of interest? Seriously.

They do 5 hrs/a day between the morning shows and the evening (its probably a bit more but lets leave it at 5).

How much of that 25hrs do you think would be reasonable to devote to female participants? And how much do you think they devote to them? Approximately, I don't need a picture of a stop watch or anything.

Would you not go and cosplay as Ewan MacKenna somewhere else? "Genuine question." instead of clogging up this forum with your nonsense.

The JNLRs have the daily audience at 45k if I recall correctly and it's been shedding listeners over the past couple of quarters.

Not that I'd put much store in the JNLRs. When you look at the methodology you can see how flawed it is and the figures it quotes are likely to be nowhere close to the numbers actually listening at a given time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,007 ✭✭✭Murdoc90

I did say "up to". A quick google shows the weekend show is actually at 143k, thats where you get those pesky DLR Waves updates!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,447 ✭✭✭MrMusician18

Proportional to the level of interest of the audience. Of course that's their call to make - what is the target audience here again?

This isn't about women's sport though as much as you'd like to frame it that way, I personally think they overdo (did) rugby and golf some days as well.

They do have a lot of hours to fill and some of it is complete dross, barstool stuff, regardless of sport and the gender of the participants.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭left_hander

I'd hazard a guess that the "How dare they have a piece on women's sports" crew don't even know how long it was covered for (quick, go to Spotify and find out....) .
Also, I wonder if you live with women and have daughters etc and are trying to keep them interested in playing sports as they become teenagers - would you share your opinion with them? Or is the cloak of anonymity and perpetual online outrage just too much of a drug?
I really hope its single males only offering this opinion because anybody who has a wife or daughter should be embarrassed to be arguing against the show covering women's sports for a little bit of their endless coverage.

Quick point on this. Bit disingenuous. They often lead with womens updates on news bulletins. Hazard a guess often taking up at least half the snippet. A lot of people driving in the car or something would flick these things on for any big breaking news. This is a tangible example of how it just negatively impacts the average sports fan with a consequential opportunity cost of more relevant news being left out.

who said that? I just find it very odd behaviour posters tuning into a show they clearly dislike to just come on here and slate it. Each to their own.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 327 ✭✭sub3wannabe

It's not quite as simple as that though is it if this 20X20 campaign thing has a lot of the potential advertisement corperates on board who no doubt are chasing ESG meaning that the product gets diluted across the board for actual consumers.

I'm sure that it's if not a prerequisite it's at least a quid pro quo from this potential advertisement partners that OTB engage with it.

    Often - I'd say rarely

Negatively impacts the average sports fans- Of all the guff spouted on this thread, that is right up there

    Congrats

The best way to promote women's sport is to help out - coach a team, fundraise, become an administrator of the club, be the taxi driver to games and training.

I assume all those vociferous posters here are doing as such, as opposed to just virtue signalling on social media.

PS - on the ground I have seen a massive increase in participation levels over the last two decades. The two biggest challenges women's sport faces are fall-off rates when girls turn 17/18 and getting spectators in to watch games. Significant improvements in these two aspects over the next 10 years will prove if this extra coverage is actually working or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 868 ✭✭✭FazyLucker

Well when you resort to accusations of virtue signalling to peddle an argument, you are going down a dangerous road. My daughters are too young but when they do get there, yes I will help out.

But to pick you up on something - if you are "on the ground" as you say, you'd surely know the bulk of the drop-off in girls participating in sports is when they get to secondary school? It is long before they get to 17-18.

The spectators to games point is 100% fair. But to me, this is where the promotion comes in and a 30-minute slot on OTB every now and then to me is a case of "why not"? The likes of football and rugby get done to death on the show. Its October and there is more than enough hours of OTB to take a half hour slot to promoting women's sport.

You absolutely nailed it with this post and I agree with every single word of it. Kudos.

Katie Taylor; rhasidat adeleke; Katie Mccabe; ciara mcgehan; leona. Maguire; rachel Blackmore; kellie Harrington; steph Roche; Sonia O'Sullivan; mona mcsharry; simone biles; serena williams and lots lots more.

If these people, and many more, have done something in sports I'm keen to hear it. I'm surprised that any general sports fan wouldn't be the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,508 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

And then don't forget the people we know nothing about who will turn into the next Rhasidat or Katie McCabe or whoever... They need coverage to get there.
