I know nothing about raspberry pies.

I have an idea for a device that would record the time between when an infrared beam or something is broken.

For example, the sensor would be active. A truck drives by and the signal is interrupted. Once the truck passes the signal is restored. I want to try and design a device that could record this. Is this possible?

    If you google

    pimylifeup raspberry-pi-light-sensor

the first result should be a pimylifeup page that basically describes what you want.

    If you google

    raspberrypi adc

you'll find some external analogue to digital converters that will give you better timing.

If you want a resolution of a few nanoseconds rlook up the ardrino based teensy
