I presume you have to be known or how do you get a credit account?

Yep. You’d need to be well known and a regular customer for a while.

Our local quarry will open an account if you deposit €500 with them.

Very few - if any - now give a credit account...since being badly stung in last economic crash.

What most do now is you lodge an amount - and they keep deducting from it until used up. They ring you when it's nearly gone to remind you to top-up.

This method ensures that they will not get stung again.

You can open a cash account practically anywhere ( I'm based in galway as well, Higgin's in shantalla will do this ). To get a credit account, you will indeed have to be known to the trader. The likes of Pat McDonnell paints will actually run a credit check against you prior to making any decision.
