“Christianity was dominant, at one point making up over 60% of the population.

Decades later, “the country is in free fall,” according to one expert. A 15-year-long sectarian civil war, an influx of Palestinian and Syrian refugees, foreign interventions, large-scale emigration, and deep corruption turned Lebanon into one of the poorest and least stable countries in a poor and volatile region. The past four years have seen a series of crises that resulted in the collapse of the Lebanese economy and mismanagement contributing to the 2020 Beirut port blast that devastated the city. The once-thriving Christian community has plummeted to roughly one-third of the population.”

It makes all the difference for afterwards however.

This war will end. Bibi will get the boot. Gaza can't be rebuilt with Hamas or it's remnant in power. That would be a disaster.

Leadership matters. The Palestinians have no one to rally round to provide a vision for a peaceful future. Fatwa, in their own unique way, are almost as bad as Hamas.

    Someone will fill the void.

Hopefully it's someone less wedded to the past.

Because we were talking about the history of the area at the time... that was the topic being discussed at time. What am I meant to inject my disagreement with Israeli military action against civilians at every possible moment?

Does that include when I'm frying an egg, or going to the Jack's? Would that qualify for you?

Oh and it is a bit more than 'an inscription', but you know that.

Clever word play may win debates, but it doesn't make it true.

Understanding and explaining things, is not the same as justifying them, if in doubt… please re-read this statement.

You’re ‘course’ because you feel you have an entitlement to be, and you enjoy it.

    Regarding @sands post:

How in the name of God,  having read that post, did you find anything to agree with in it?

It’s Alex Jones level of bats*it crazy conspiracy theories about secret Zionist cabals ruling the world.

No politician in North America, Europe, Australia, NZ or the west in general can get elected without debasing themselves before this all-powerful Zionist world ruling entity, and that apparently includes Sligo/Leitrim. It’s absolute claptrap.

Even worse is that seven posters ‘Thanked’ this post. Seven people read this rubbish, stroked their chin, twirled their moustaches and though to themselves, ‘Hmm, this guy has it all worked out, must read more.”

    So, is it anti-Semitic?

    Of course it is.

The age old anti-semitic trope is ‘Jews rule the world”, that the “Jews control the world order”.

Regurgitating those tropes, but substituting Zionist instead of Jew doesn’t make it any less anti-Semitic, or clever. It’s only a fig leaf, not the cloak of invisibility some people seem to think it is. Like Alex Jones, who built a career in plausible deniability, it’s nothing more than repackaged anti-Semitism in new language catered towards a willing audience.

The only people who don’t see the anti-Semitism in this are the anti-Semitics, and they’re just ignoring it. Normal people simply don’t talk like this.

Would you honestly walk into a bar, stand up on a stage, recite that post, and then with a straight face, at the end, inform the audience that “Of course, I have nothing against Jews”.

You’d be laughed out of the bar. People can see read between the lines.

Good night. I'm not even going to bother with this hysterical gibberish.

The OP is absurd. The war between Israel on one side and Iran and its proxies on the other isn't exactly the Cuban Missiles Crisis.

You lived there for 6 months and describe it as a place of chaos and war? Either you're just making this up, or else you had an extremely warped view of a country that you lived in for half a year.

In principle, I agree with you, on the basis of Israel pulling out of Gaza right now.

But they aren't and won't. They are executing their plan. Gaza will be razed to the ground. Vital infrastructure is already gone. This no way anyone could live in Gaza even as it is now - we've all seen the pictures. And it is getting worse - Israel continues to destroy and kill.

Do you honestly believe that, in a few years time, there will be a couple of million Palestinians in Gaza gazing over their brand new shiny concrete and glass homes, ordering a takeaway for the evening and settling in to watch their favourite tv show having just booked their car in for a service?

No - Israel is executing its plan. They've told the world what it is.
Right now, the Israelis are commencing Gaza II in Lebanon.

I doubt the average Gazan is even thinking of who they will rally around. The only thought that occupies them is how on god's earth will they and whatever is left of their family will survive the night.

Netanyahu and that whole far right regime need to be removed from power with immediate affect ….. it is very clear they do not want any kind of peace …. like Milosevic they are troublemakers who need to be removed before peace can be restored ….. the US should lay it on the line and pressurise Israel by saying friendly relations are not going to continue unless Netanyahu is removed …. as far as I know the president of Israel can fold the govt ….. and replaced with a moderate administration …..

The far right aka warmongers are destroying much of the world with their conspiracy orientated half baked cr@p …… they are getting into power in too many places and Netanyahu is the worst example of what they really stand for ….. should Trump gain power in the US things will only get worse ……

Netanyahu wants to spread lies and propaganda blaming Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran, Syria ….. and has done all he can to sideline moderates in all these movements/countries including current Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian ….. funny thing is he was never very vocal about ISIS who shared common enemies with Netanyahu ….. perhaps far right Netanyahu saw a kindred spirit in far right ISIS ….. just like he does in far right MAGA …..

It is now time to out the far right for what they are ….. the more far right in power worldwide the more wars we will get including in places not previously known for war ….. afterall the Middle East was once the most peaceful place on earth and not that long ago ….. Iran and Iraq were the places to be to avoid WW2 for example ……

Looks like Israel will go for broke on iran attack or else they no longer trust biden

"U.S. Frustrated by Israel’s Reluctance to Share Iran Retaliation Plans

Israel has so far refused to divulge to the Biden administration details of its plans to retaliate against Tehran, U.S. officials say, even as the White House is urging its closest Middle East ally not to hit Iran’s oil facilities or nuclear sites amid fears of a widening regional war. (WSJ)

Poor Lebanon knocked off the top story slot due to another storm in America. Even RTE giving preference to this American story over the Middle East.

The media already bored with Lebanon?

Sorry but there's one big problem with that scenario. Bibi isn't an ideologue. His partners in the coalition are. Bibi is a survivor who only thinks of Bibi. He would do whatever he could to survive. And that meant doing whatever his coalition partners wanted.

Technically it was the christians that did that. The christians started the lebanese civil war.

And because of the civil war, Lebanon has a weird governmental structure which divides power amound three ethnic groups. And that has led to rampant cronyism and corruption. And there's still other militias there. So yes, hezbollah are part of the problem. But they weren't the source of problems which started before they were even created. And there's a lot more to lebanon than just Hezbollah and everyone else.

For anyone that's interested, there's a great book by Robert Fisk called Pity the nation. I have to warn you though, it gets really in depth, really fast. And there's so many players that it can get confusing remembering who is who and what they did.

On 8 October 2023, a day after Hamas launched its 7 October 2023 attacks on Israel and Israel began its bombing of GazaHezbollah joined the conflict in "solidarity with the Palestinians,  initially firing on Israeli military outposts in Shebaa Farms and the Golan Heights

Just on the topic of AI. It's not precise. AI needs to learn. It needs to be given information and then you need to confirm it's correct. For ChatGPT there's thousands of people training it every day.

In this case, they would have to run tens of thousands of scenarios and then verify with human intelligence that it's correct. What we saw in gaza was that the AI generated targets and they just hit them. So those targets could be that a low level Hamas guy frequents a place. Therefore the place became a target. Unfortunately it would be the family home that he visited every so often to see parents. And he wasn't there. Because the AI is generating targets based on his movements before the conflict started.

AI doesn't understand context. It doesn't understand the information it's given. It just generates based on pattern recognition.

You start a war and you lose you lose territory. Look at germany post 1945

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,027 ✭✭✭Palmach

Considering the far far more bloody conflicts in the DRC, Sudan, Ethiopia and Myanmar get zero coverage from the Irish media I'd say Lebanon and Gaza are being utterly over reported.

If you are comparing Israel to Hamas and Hezbollah you are even less informed than the man you after whom you named yourself.

Which is more modern - medieval or biblical?

Some of your post contains letters which don't form recognised words or sentences so I cannot comment on those

"The right of conquest was historically a right of ownership to land after immediate possession via forceof arms.
It was recognized as a principle of international law that gradually deteriorated in significance until its proscription in the aftermath of World War II following the concept of crimes against peace introduced in the Nuremberg Principles"

"Annexation amounts to an act of aggression, forbidden by international law. IHL provides that in the event that an Occupying Power annexes all or part of an occupied territory, protected persons therein shall not be deprived of the benefits of the Fourth Geneva Convention."

Jerusalem was a city state that was settled by Jews in the 900’s BC. Your point is like saying Northern Ireland as a country has only ever existed as a British colony ignoring the fact ethnic Irish people settled there first. Palestine and Lebanon are prime examples of Islam not mixing with other religions.

why are the posters who are some of the most prominent anti-immigration posters on here pro-Israel? it's the same on twitter. is it just because they hate arabs? or do they do it just to be contrarian madlads?
