Fixings - External Insulation

    I need to fix something not too heavy to external insulation and I am looking at using concrete screws approx 150mm. If I pre-drill until I hit the concrete I should be able to screw in and hopefully get a nice and strong secure fix.

    Has anyone here used this method before when fixing external insulation?

    On what type of block is the external insulation mounted? If it's cavity block (as opposed to a cavity wall) then the concrete screws won't hold as there's only a ~2cm wall on the blocks.

    Thankfully no it is not cavity, solid blocks and the walls are rendered.

    Anyone with experience with hanging a canopy over a door with external insulation 100mm. I am looking for advice and on what fixings would be an option?

    What happens if you hit a mortar joint when you drill?

    what diameter are the screws?

    what happens if you over egg the torque and the screw spins in the hole

    what size are the fixing holes in the canopy.

    Wind load is the design issue here

    I would be thinking bolts fixed with epoxy in the wall? much more control

    We decided against the canopy over the door, and instead, we're now looking at a door surround to give the front a more pleasing finish. At the moment, the front just looks too bland.

    I've come across a company online that specialises in poly moulding for passive sills and canopies and they can also create a bespoke design. The materials they use are lightweight. To fix this over and around the front door, do you think concrete screws would be a sufficient fix to the external insulation, provided they're long enough and secure to the concrete behind the insulation?

    You definitely need to ask the passive sills company about fixings. Having installed passive sills myself - and not in a negative way I'll say - that there is no way that I'd deviate from the guidance provided.
