Completely agree. It's literally JD asking "what's your favourite ground/goal/colour?" to whoever they have on.

I'd actually argue that's where the OTB crew shine. I like the paper reviews on the weekend and the shoot the sh*t feeling to it.

You get some great yearns or experiences that the contributors have had. Behind the scenes at the Masters, working with the FAI, the inner workings of the LOI clubs etc etc.

Seems to be quiet at the moment regarding Joe Molloy's venture with the Indo.

Yeah I was wondering this myself, I haven't seen anything from him anywhere lately. Maybe they are working on having weeks and weeks of content, subscribe now to get interviews with A, B, C, etc.

I think Eoin and Will are doing fine on the show to be fair to them. Not quite Joe standard, but they are good. Thank God they left Ger on AM as I don't listen to it anyway!

I don't understand why people are so worked up about where Richie does the newsround from. Its a 1/2 hour section of the show, he lives in Meath I gather - I would be more annoyed at the carbon footprint waste of dragging him in to Digges Lane to do it.

Yes there's the odd gremlin but no more than anybody else who does a job on Teams, etc.

It doesn't bother me in the least to be honest.

Gambling sponsorship is the ultimate in virtue signalling from every side I feel and when all is said and done I bet everybody "outraged" about it would work for a gambling company if they got a 50% salary increase for example. Its a bit like Saudi money after all, virtue signalling and disgust and outrage until it lands in your pocket or your pension fund is invested in Saudi companies…

    Carbon footprint? Ha

I'm guessing you are a dub.

Hundreds of thousands have to commute to work in Dublin every day. Have you never seen or heard how mental traffic is on roads leading to the m50. Maybe every job could be done at home? To save on the carbon footprint. Every job can be done on teams. Maybe we should all not be driving at all? No one should travel anywhere. No one should do anything.

On the Richie stuff. If your job is broadcasting in an audio format then have good audio. I don't mind him broadcasting from home if he has proper setup. He doesn't.

On the betting stuff. It's insidious, it's taken over sports and in the next 10 or 15 years we'll look back at gambling advertising like how we look at old cigarette gambling ads now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,253 ✭✭✭dominatinMC

Well said. And the Teams comparison by the OP is a ridiculous one too. Most people who WFH and use Teams are not broadcasting to 60/70k people across the nation. Sound quality and delivery is crucial, which should be needless to say.

As for the whole carbon argument. I'm sure there are trains, given that Meath is commuter-belt territory. That should ease our collective conscience..

Is not giving a sh1t about the gambling overlords but professing to care about the carbon footprint of a short commute the most OTB cheerleader comment ever?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 868 ✭✭✭FazyLucker

OK, well to me I've never been bothered by Richie WFH to be honest. Most nights it is fine. I've sort of been listening out for it due to the constant outrage on here and have counted 3 nights where there has been an issue.

On the gambling thing, its a fair point he makes. Most of us would take a job with Paddy Power if they offered us 50% more than our current salary. Or is everybody here so principled as to not?

And, he or she rightly points out how many of us know where our pension funds are invested? Hands up, I don't have a clue. It is probably in some Saudi oil field. I shouldn't bury my head in the sand, but at the moment that is very much where it is.

The thing about the sound is a couple of hundred quid would sort a lot of the issues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,508 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

That's it. It's like he's using a crappy mic with dodgy Internet.

My work has a policy of sorts that if your Internet is poor for a while it's tolerated, but there is an expectation you will do something to resolve it. Or else work in the office. Which is fair.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 754 ✭✭✭Paterson Jerins

What he said was nonsense. Good lad there buddy pal

As others have already said, its hard to tolerate their discussions on gambling when their sponsor is William Hill and they push the Cash Machine down our throats every 5 minutes. It makes a mockery of the whole topic tbh and smacks of virtue signallying.

They are not the only ones - Totally Football Weekly and Football Ramble are the same. When Ivan Toney was banned for gambling for example, they all had segments on the dangers of gambling etc. Obviously there was no mention of their Paddy Power sponsored bet build segment on the show, or their constant betting adverts throughout the podcast.

I don't particular care, but just worth noting as its a common theme I see across many football podcasts. I think the Guardian Football podcast is the only one that has actively refused gambling sponsors, may be open to correction there.

my wife works from home a few days a week and apart from anything else the few days without the stress of communing is a great thing. We dont have to be tied to our desks every day, and if that helps with the reduction of the aul carbon that's hardly a bad thing.

As for Ritchie, surely for the cost of one cash machine giveaway Bauer can give him a proper studio fit up? wouldn't they have a few spare post covid?

Here's Ritchie, live from Claire Byrnes old shed, with the Newsround

I think it's great that the people too frightened to go outside stay inside. Fair play Ritchie!

In fairness the Cash Machine seems to be across the whole Go Loud umbrella.

I see it's starting Monday and its free, they weren't lying saying it was starting in September, it's starting on Sept 30th.

Ya just can't let it go buddy, can ya man?

I'm sorry for offending your show pal. But perhaps Richie can go into the office now and again? Maybe take public transport like hundreds of thousands of us do. Even a few days a week, just so he can be heard clearly, and maybe be more professional. He could even prep for the show face to face with some of his colleagues. Or else, perhaps get someone else to do the job since he lives so far away from the studio? As the poster said, it's only a half hour of the sports news, maybe it'd be a good gig for an intern?

Good man felex. Sound. Cheers bud. Chat soon rich. Looking forward to your response... mate

Did you hear the trailer for it? I heard it on Spotify.

I think Joe won't air any dirty laundry but looking at the structure of the show with the Indo, it sounds like something OTB could definitely have accommodated if they had wanted to. It's 5 days a week, with some sort of a support crew/production team and with indo journalists/guests joining to discuss topics.

For Joe, it sounds like pretty much the same as what he was doing but maybe it's a shorter working day and he can do it from home? Wonder did it just come down to money, but if so, I wouldn't have thought the Indo would have broken the bank for this when print media is struggling as it is.

Will be interesting to see how it develops and if it ends up sounding the same as OTB/Second Captains/Game On but whatever the case, it would be interesting to know if OTB 'let him go' given his record and them trying to drive the membership angle.

Ahhhh an excellent response from the person that has no logical reply. I already apologised for being mean about yer show fella.

I debated the original post. Which you seemed very triggered from my response to that. But you can only claim i am triggered now? Bizarre stuff from the lad that can't let it go.

Good man. Superb posting from yerself buddy. Chat soon............. mate

Just wondering what you mean by saying letting him go 'given his record'?

Like you said though it may well have been convenient for all involved. Joe wanted a change and maybe different hours to suit his new family circumstances, Ger needed to shed some salary if the subscription model has bombed (it doesn't look like Joe was replaced).

I've listened to the evening show on and off and think Eoin is doing fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 868 ✭✭✭FazyLucker

Well he'd probably have been working 12-14 hour days if he wants to do the Indo show, and then slot in to OTB at 7pm. There is also the fact that much as most people like Joe, I don't necessarily want 5-6 hours a day of him at the same time!

He probably didn't want to work the graveyard shift any more and has young kids, so something dropping in to the podcast feeds just in time for drive time was perfect.

The fact that print media is absolutely screwed is why they had to go with this - Mediahuis like everyone else in the media need to find new revenue streams and a decent sports podcast every day will attract sponsorship easily.

(Oh god, not him working from home now too…………I can feel the keyboards warming already…..😁)

His record of having won a few presenter of the year awards. He's been the most popular individual sports presenter for the last few years and has received a lot of praise and recognition.

Subscription model not doing well shouldn't significantly influence their cash flow given how long they have managed to produce the content for the radio they have been producing. It's a proven model. And if funds were/are an issue, cutting your best presenter wouldn't be the first step. Or 2nd or 3rd.

No. I'm not suggesting he'd have done the Indo gig AND his regular job. Rather that they would have found a way to basically give him the Indo hours, but still within the OTB space.

He did say that this gig, and deciding to take it had to do with family time and so I'm wondering why they didn't find a way to make that work rather than him leaving. Maybe its the whole second captains thing again and not wanting to change based on presenters wishes, as I said, I don't think we'll ever know for sure. He's a competitor to them now, I'm surprised they would have let that happen without trying to avoid it.
