Is this a crazy price for a patio?

    Hi there,

I had a landscape designer put together plans for a patio that he estimated would cost in the region of 12k. The patio size is just shy of 90 m2.

I got recommended a landscaper to do the work, provided the plans and he came back with a cost of €20k which seems extortionate!!

The cost for the porcelain tiles works out at about €55/m2 so there is considerable mark up for the work. The site itself isn’t in too bad nick and there are three raised beds in the design but even still I’m a bit shocked at the quote provided.

That would be 90 square meters, rather than 90 meters square? If so that is 5k for the tiles. Plus whatever for the raised beds, soil etc. Presumably set in a concrete bed - is there any drainage to consider? 20 sounds a bit over the top - but they seem to be able to do think of a number pricing at the moment. On the other hand given maybe 7 or 8k for materials, 15 + vat is probably not far out.

(don't mind me quibbling about the area, the discussion has been had before. I do get its 90 sq. m)

Were the raised beds included in quote? There is number of other factors and materials you need to consider not just cost of tiles, i.e. sub base, pointing, labour, VAT. It also depends where you live, dublin is usually more costly. Then there is insurance, cost of van and tools and other costs associated with self employment and no holiday or sick pay, days without work due to seasonality or weather etc. Not many people realize this is not 9-5 job with secure salary, self-employed needs to account for all this.

90 sqm is a large area to pave over so with the inflation and cost of living through the roof I doubt you can get porcelain paving done below €200 per sqm.
