I just ported my number, and the first issue I encountered was that the port was cancelled because the rep on the phone incorrectly marked my Vodafone account as unregistered. I had to complete the port manually, which luckily went quickly.

The first problem I noticed was that I had no mobile data. After getting the Sky settings, which only added "mobile.sky" to the APN, I still faced issues. My iMessage and FaceTime wouldn't activate, and while I briefly had LTE and 5G, I'm now stuck on either G, 3G, or E. Despite restarting my phone and toggling Airplane mode, I keep dropping from LTE/5G back down to 3G. Running a speed test shows a latency of 300ms!

In the MySky app, I can't set a spending cap as it keeps turning itself off. Additionally, I can't disable the parental controls DNS without entering a debit card, but the "verify and turn off" button doesn't work after I input my details.

I'm also not receiving verification texts, like those from MyGovID. This whole experience has been frustrating, and I regret switching so far. If this isn’t resolved soon, I’m ordering a Vodafone or GoMo SIM card. I'm not even going to bother calling Sky about it.

EDIT: The issues with the G/3G/E seem to now be resolved, not sure what the issue was there. I still do not have verification codes or iMessage (which I believe requires the verification codes).

EDIT2: Verification codes are slowly beginning to work now, MyGovID now sends texts, still no iMessage though.

Sky WiFi calling works outside of the ROI. It's not a glitch either, it's stated in the T&C's.

I'm on Android 15 Beta on a Pixel 9 Pro Fold. No 5G or WiFi Calling support still, though I was able to enable WiFi Calling using the Pixel IMS app.

I know that all of these issues SHOULD have been fixed before launch, but as an MVNO I would guess that Sky are (to a point) caught in the middle as well on some of them with dependencies on VF and their network configuration as well. Add then the other operators that people are porting over from, and different mobile phone types, OS versions and patch levels, and it's no wonder there's issues.

It was the same thing when GoMo launched, and their parent/host network is basically the same company (Eir), AND they had the experience of running Meteor before it but STILL had issues.

I'd be confident it'll all get sorted out over the next few days and weeks myself. It's unfortunately the case nowadays in general that early adopters are basically beta testers/guinea pigs - whether it be this, "early access" or even AAA game releases, Windows 11 users when it launched etc.

See the worst part of this is you are probably right and I agree with you, it's just being locked into a 12 month contract is the worst part. We are essentially guinea pigs for 12 months.

I was able to turn off the parental controls in the app by using my credit card, I had the same issues as you when I entered my debit card details.

Just noticed that Sky Mobile seems to support Visual Voicemail and Live Voicemail in iOS 17.0. Is this available to everyone on iOS 17.0 or is this a Sky Mobile exclusive feature?

EDIT1: Seems to be a Sky Mobile exclusive feature, didn't have this on Vodafone or my mother's GoMo. It's also listed on their website. If they can get everything else resolved this is the thing that will make me stay.

EDIT2: My IMS Status shows Voice & SMS as well. Vodafone showed just Voice.

Is there an advantage / disadvantage to an eSIM over a physical SIM or is there no difference just once is physical and the other isn't?

Just physical / isn't, and the pros and cons that comes with that. Nothing else.

Don't have a credit card to test sadly. Might have to call them to ask for them to remove it for me.

Which iPhone do you have? I don't have the visual voicemail option - I'm on an iPhone 11 which is supposed to support it I think. It says 'Visual voicemail is currently unavailable'.

iPhone 15 Pro Max running iOS 18.0 with a physical SIM card.

Maybe my phone is too old. I'm still running IOS 17.7 as I don't have enough space to update to IOS18. I've pre ordered an iPhone 16 pro so I'll try it again then.

According to Apple's website, Live Voicemail works in Ireland. Maybe this is an iOS 18 addition?

Yes. The document where I found the information is only accessed through My Sky (to my knowledge) So log into My Sky and go to "My Documents" and then click on the "Sky Mobile Key Information" document. It may be named something else.
If you search for the words Wi-Fi calling or have a quick scroll it does mention it can be used abroad.

Visual voicemail also sounds really nice. I'm glad I joined to be honest, the Wi-Fi calling abroad will come in handy aswell for holidays when I'm outside of the EU.

I need to download iOS 18.0 on my parent's phones later and see if GoMo and Vodafone both support it.

GoMo doesn't for sure. Also might be nothing but maybe your iMessage is not activating because you have a spend cap on 0? The verification for iMessage sends an SMS to a UK phone number costing 7c. This is with all the providers. So maybe disable your spend cap, or set it to a euro and leave it for a while and see if it works, then if it does you can make it 0 again.

just checked visual voicemails after reading your comment. It is working for me. ios 18 as well. Brilliant feature, just play/read the voicemail without dailing voicemail. Thanks!

I have the spend cap set to 15 euro, not sure what's going on. I also have the "Premium SMS" set to "Allowed". But when it is set to Allowed I get an email stating that my Premium SMS now has a bar enabled? Seems the switch might be flipped?

No verification texts is a big problem for me, can’t access websites without it 😢

Got settings sent to iPhone eventually.

Child controls removal won’t work for me either tried debit and credit card. Did msg sky about this stuff but no reply.
a lot of problems it seems so far 😔

Using the Edge/Chrome console using F12 Developer Tools shows an error they are unable to tokenize the cards, that's why it's failing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 494 ✭✭pfftdetail

Seemingly Googling it, it now works worldwide with iOS 18.0. It's not a carrier dependent feature anymore.

EDIT: It worked in iOS 17.0 if you set your iPhone region to USA. So it was just a restriction by Apple.

EDIT2: You can check here. If you select iOS 17 it says only available in US etc etc. If you select iOS 18 there's a page to check which country it is available in.

As I can't rely on Sky to get the e-sim sorted anytime soon I had to switch to Lycamobile 10euro a month for 12 months all calls and texts and data. The voicemail feature is deffo an all network affair as it works with them. If gomo had esim I wouldn't have had to change to anyone else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 494 ✭✭pfftdetail

Just watch out, the Lyca Mobile deal is 100GB fair usage. Not totally unlimited.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,908 ✭✭✭Glaceon

Live voicemail is an iOS 18 addition. It's not the same as visual voicemail. it requires your phone to be on and in coverage. You'll still hit your carrier's voicemail if out of coverage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 494 ✭✭pfftdetail

My phone is always on and within coverage. I know it's not the same thing. But it's nice to know that all carriers now support it and it's no longer a US based restriction.

If the SMS, parental controls and iMessage issues aren't fixed by Monday I will more than likely port out of the network. I assume if I port out then my contract is auto-cancelled or do I still need to inform Sky?

Question is do I port out to GoMo for 15/month or back to Vodafone PAYG for 20…?
