How did you manage to get the 38% discount? Do you need to switch supplier first for them to reach out to switch back? seems mad that they won't offer the 38% first to stay with Energia

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 530 ✭✭✭Cuauhtemoc

Indeed. Also a possible way to get a smart meter installed quickly if you're looking for one.

if you are using 14,000 units (we have similar usage) assume a heat pump? in winter daily use will be a lot more than 10KWH im sure or am i wrong?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 530 ✭✭✭Cuauhtemoc

    @Cyrus

Not yet! We have a wood chip boiler which costs about €100 every 4 to 6 weeks over the winter. Not too bad.

Electricity is mainly EV, immersion and appliances.

Was just working out from the first few weeks of consistent meter data at about 30kwh night and 7kwh day atm. 11k and 2.5k units annually. Will see how that works out! Not all the 11k units will be able to move to 2 to 6am but most should.

Just signed up for energia EV plan yesterday so let's see.

How did you get the 38% as an existing customer. They are refusing to give to me, max they are offering is 29% discount. Did you have to instigate a move to another provider.

so I'm out Contract with Energia

I can go through the switching and getting a call from the retention team and get 38 % discount (25.88c-12.41c Day/night) they have 377 standing charge.

but the flogas certa rate looks better or am I missing something ?

    (25.48c - 12.35c Day/Night )

    There standing charge is 331.32

I'm out of contract too. Switched to SSE. Then a fella from Energia called to offer their best rate.

    SSE - fixed 12 months:
    Day - 24.05c
    Night - 14.91c
    Standing charge - €309.57

Energia after the call - variable 12 months:
    Day - 27.50c
    Night - 12.5c
    Standing charge - €298.39
    + €50 cashback

I'm doing 50% night and 50% day so the new Energia comes to the same amount per year given the cashback. With the bonus of a lower night rate that comes in handy.

My Energia Smart Drive plan is coming to an end shortly, rate of 33.86c and 2-6am of 7.54c. I have 60% of my useage on the cheaper rate.

I was looking at the BG EV New Elec plan as an alternative:

    image.png

The night rate is cheaper although an hour shorter but I reckon I could move the majority of my usage into the shorter window.

Although the BG Standing Charge is €100 more expensive and the Microgeneration rate paid by BG would leave me about another €150 short, from looking at my useage I think the cheaper rates during the day will more than make up the difference.

I was looking at the same plan but my usage is 90% in the EV window with load shifting are the prices above including VAT?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,685 ✭✭✭Officer Giggles

    Yes above prices include VAT.

I have air to water so during the winter we would see a significant saving due to the cheaper day rate.

With 90% usage in the EV window obviously the savings might not be as much

Signed up with flowgas and then after a few days rang energia. They said I was on a list to ring anyway.

I didn't get 50 cashback but the day rate is 2c Lower.

Looks like dynamic tariffs will be with us next year.

    https://www.cru.ie/publications/28339/

I just renewed with Energia with the 38%, hopefully unit rates drop at some point in the coming months.

Interesting setup, looks like the rates will be Day ahead market rate plus some base rate set by the supplier. Pretty much what you'd expect

One thing that shocked me was the CRU proposing to ban break contract fees with dynamic tariffs on the basis there's no hedging risk for the supplier

There's no mention of the FIT also being dynamic that I could find, so presumably only import for now. It could definitely suit someone with an EV and home batteries who's also willing to setup the automation to manage it. Not sure anyone is going to want to try and do it manually

I had an interesting call with Energia (im up for renewal and started the switch to EI).

Energia tell me that they wont renew on MCC02 anymore unless you want standard rates.

If you want a discount you have to go to MCC12 (smart plan). Its still a d/n rate(no peak) they quoted me (27.5/13.2 inc vat and discount for rural)

He reckoned all the providers were now being told this was mandatory recently.

Anyone else get that spiel from energia or other provider?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,346 ✭✭✭John arse

No none of that, did the fake switch - energia then rang with the discount @38% and €50 credit, asked me if was happy on current D/N plan MCC02- happy days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭Redlim

Yep, I got the exact same last week. Switched to EI and didn't get any retention call from Energia. So I rang them again myself - still no budging and all they could offer was the smart plan. Might try again before the 14 days are up.

MCC02 is a bog standard day/night smart meter, as far as I'm aware these meters aren't capable of MCC12 time of use smart plans (peak rates, EV 2-4am rates etc)? They literally just rolled these smart D/N meters out and am I **** going near a smart plan to get shafted in future.

Is it a case of them giving you a smart time of use with just D/N rates so you're stuck with peak rate bollocks in the future?

These sales lads often don't know what they're talking about and even make up rates to get you to do things their way. The fact they tell you that you can't get the plans when there's other people getting them just shows how spineless the regulator is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,422 ✭✭✭KCross

    when was that?

He said this was a recent directive to offer no more MCC02 renewals unless you don’t have a smart meter.

I'll be doing this dance with them next week. It will be interesting as my smart meter is in apartment basement and can't connect to ESB Networks (it is CTF 01) – so they'll have no choice but to keep me on MCC02?

    Hi

I am with Energia on their Smart Drive plan and am out of contract on the 5th of October.

    Unit rates are 0.3386 6 a.m. to 2 a.m.and 0.0754 from 2-6 a.m.

Rang them today to see what they could do if I stayed with them and I was told that they wont do anything on the pricing as it is a unique plan.

Anyone here have the same experience and if so did you manage to get any reduction on the unit prices even on the day rate?

I really dont want to change supplier in order to get a discount with them but if I have to then I will.

    Cheers

I tried to negotiate on this Energia plan but failed ! It has 4 hours at a very low rate of 7.64 inc vat, which is unique, and as export is 24 cent, when i factor everything in, it offers the most flexibility. Standing charge is good @ €236.62 inc vat. Pinergy was close at 5.45 cent, and slightly better export of 25 cent.

The day rate is irrelevant to me as i don’t use hardly any day rates.

Energia are overdue a price reduction, so maybe one is coming, as from what i can see they are the only ones not to have a price reduction in more than 6 months

That's not too bad. Have you tried energypal? I'm on the BG EV plan it might be worth looking at if you can fit everything into the smaller window (2-5).

Just rang Electric Ireland (tied into a contract until Feb '25).

    I currently pay €0.3287 minus a 18% discount = €0.2629. I have solar being installed in mid Oct including a 10kWh battery.

From Nov 1st, their night rate with a smart meter is as follows...

    €0.34c 8am-11pm

    €0.1693 11-8am

    €0.9c 2-4am

Includes 5.5% discount but I lose my current 18% if I switch but there is an electric car to be charged every week or so.

They will buy back excess energy from the solar for €0.21c per unit if I switch.

    Anything I'm missing?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,587 ✭✭✭MarkN

Yeah I thought the window was small alright and I also need to ask about the charging speed, something I didn't check.

    Thanks for the reply.

I do a lot in the 4 hour window that is available at the cheaper rate, charge a hybrid car, fill a 5kw solar battery, run the immersion, dishwasher and washing machine. Dont think I could do all of that in the 3 hour window as the car alone has a 12kw battery and I can only get about 3kw an hour into that.
