This format, if I remember correctly, was only introduced in 2022 where you play 2 matches against each team but instead of a home and away, you play one team away twice, one team home twice and the other home and away. Not sure which bright spark thought this was a good idea, then again this is the same people that were in charge when they thought having South Africa leave Super Rugby is a good idea and that now think they can introduce a test series against New Zealand and South Africa again and somehow fit it in the calendar.

Australia getting absolutely spanked in the 2nd half

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,204 ✭✭✭Enzokk

We will have to see, they have been used to such a high standard for so long, yet we forget they were not that great in 2009 in the Tri Nations and lost 3 in a row against South Africa that year as well. There will be a time of rebuilding for them to do but they will always be good. New Zealand rugby though needs a reset of some sorts and the turmoil off the field will not help but from memory Robertson's Crusaders teams weren't the best in one area of the game. They did everything though to a high standard as a team which made them the best, if they can get close to that then I have no doubt they will be around the top again in a couple of years time.

Argentina just ran rings around Australia, that was some impressive attacking rugby from them. Attacking the space and keeping the ball in play, will be interesting to see if they can continue this against SA.

    Yeah, the format isn't great.

One thing that has definitely helped SA turn the tide against NZ is that they have only played NZ in NZ once in the last 10 Tests over 5 years. In that time, they have played 5 neutral venues, 4 times in SA and once in NZ.

Wtf happened Australia. Was leading 20-3 after 30 minutes, 20-17 half time. Then with 9 minutes left they were trailing 41-27. And end up shipping another 26 points in those last 9 minutes to lose 67-27. Outscored 64-7 in 50 minutes. And they still have 2 games against NZ to go.

Unless Schmidt can perform absolute miracles over the next 8-10 months, the Lions Tour is going to be a joke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,299 ✭✭✭Jacovs

Misses it during the game, but the line out leading to Kolisi's try, Kolbe actually threw the ball in. Always doing something different.

Perfect throw to mid lineout. Perhaps designed to influence NZs defensive line.

It was shocking! A total collapse.
Argentina were threatening to break free even in the first half. Contepomi has them playing almost like 7s.

Joe is going to have to hold some of his players to account. Might not see a few of those play for the Wallabies again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,299 ✭✭✭Jacovs

It was on the left side of the field where Kolbe was playing. It free'd up Malcolm Marx to join the line out and maul straight away, he didnt have to run in from the line. And then Kolbe just falls into his position, on the left side line anyways. Not really innovative, but different.

Watching it now. Still cant fathom conceding 26 points in 9 minutes. Argentina should get 2 bonus points.

My brother lives over there and reckons crowds will be sparse especially at the games v regional sides.

Cricket and NRL rule the roost ahead of Aussie Rules

Feel the Lions tour is going to come at the worst time for Australian rugby. They need success to bring back fans, and watching the Lions smash again is going to do nothing to help them.

Their "Super" sides aren't great anyway, but pull the Internationals out as they usually do during the Tour and the results will be carnage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,567 ✭✭✭niallm77

Yeah the brother was saying he thinks the tour will be a disaster results wise. And unless there is a huge travelling fanbase it won't be a good one for the Aussies and that long term they are in trouble as they lose players overseas or to League.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,692 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Realistically - Wales by themselves would put it up to Australia over a 3 test series, and I think Scotland would expect to win down there right now. Ireland and England would absolutely expect to whitewash them right now.

It's shaping up to be the least competitive Lions series in as long as I can remember. The 2013 tour to Australia wasn't great, but that Aussie team went on to be RWC finalists a couple of years later.

Wales lost against oz twice this summer, they are pretty rubbish right now. I reckon Scotland would beat them though

They did , but as crap as they are right now they were still reasonably competitive in those games.

Ireland and England would expect to comfortably win any game by a least a couple of scores on current form and Scotland would absolutely fancy themselves to win a 3 test series against them.

Argentina got around the edge over and over , it was basically on any time the ball went wide. Not too disimilar to 2015, I'd say Joe was having flashbacks

    https://www.springboks.rugby/news-features/articles/2024/09/10/erasmus-names-28-man-bok-squad-for-argentina-tour/:

"The seven players who will not travel to Argentina are Bongi Mbonambi (hooker), Frans Malherbe (prop), Pieter-Steph du Toit (loose forward), Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (flyhalf), Damian de Allende (centre), Cheslin Kolbe (wing), and Willie le Roux (fullback).

All of them will be placed on a specialised training programme to keep them sharp with an eye on rejoining the group in Mpumalanga upon their return from Argentina."

11 backs is a bit crazy to me. Even if you go 6/2 you need 9 in a matchday squad. I guess Rassie would see the upside in being forced to play Kwagga on the wing or something similar

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,299 ✭✭✭Jacovs

On a 6/2 split like you say, you need 9 backs and 14 forwards. They have 11 and 17. Must feel its adequate and not worth the risk to bring more players just in case, with the jet lag and all it entails. Roll the dice. Go all out for the home game. Surprised Kolisi is going, wouldve thought its the ideal time to give him a weekend off to get his nose sorted and be ready for the home game. Both Am and Moerat have led the team before and couldve done so again.

Very late start though, 23:00 over here, not ideal having the game finish at 01:00 but least its a sunday then so not too much of a problem.

Oddly, if that team can go and get a good win in Argentina, it might be their most impressive win of this Championship so far when you consider the extent of the experience they've left behind for this one.

    Team now probably looking like:

    (15-9, 1-8):

Fassi, Arendse, Am, Kriel, Mapimpi, Pollard, Williams, Nche, Marx, Koch, Nortje, Etzebeth, Louw, Kolisi, Wiese.

Still obviously a very good side, but De Allende, Kolbe, Malherbe and most of all PSDT are massive players to take out.

I've lost count at this stage how many times it's been but Stuart Hogg has been released on bail after being arrested again, this time for allegedly breaching previous bail conditions ahead of his trial for domestic abuse.

    That man is not right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,029 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Arrested a few hours before he was due in court on a separate charge of domestic abuse.

The man is a danger to his family and to himself.

I cant remember if someone else mentioned it on here before, but found this interesting:

    https://www.balls.ie/rugby/johnny-sexton-south-africa-trip-610124?fbclid=IwY2xjawFOMtlleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHbqylUa5GLiLrsE-O2Yz9IQSsxs0tr0Dy3AuNruidVdEV9XaeMMIFobBRA_aem_8jzNsUenCDhy7GXNIAvh8Q

Sexton in SA last weekend to watch SA vs NZ in Cape Town, but its his first time in SA, even though he played rugby for 17 years.
