The greens have a thing about plastic bags, why use plastic bags when you can spend a third of a million on a shelter 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54,572 ✭✭✭✭tayto lover

So we have a bicycle shelter that doesn't protect bicycles from the elements at a cost of 336,000 euro and a

Children's Hospital where a helicopter with dangerously ill children cannot land at 6 billion euro.

Someone is responsible for these debacles and should be held accountable for them.

I think I’d be in their lobby asking for the itemized bill today. The public paid enough for it to know. No apparent justification for the price. You’d swear the roof was lined with silver and gold. Did it take a team of engineers a year in a locked room to come up with the design

6 billion have you a source for that?

    2.24 as of last spring

This looks like an off the shelf shelter design. It is very similar to shelter Owen Keegan put in at the Windy Arbour Luas stop, along with bike lockers and a vandal proof pump. The whole lot, apart from the rails to to lock bikes to has since been removed/vandalised. I believe it all cost about 100k.

Not much use for the frame, gearing, brakes etc.

It is perfectly reasonable to want sheltered bike parking. The execution of said reasonable request is the issue.

The justified outrage will rumble on for a while

An inquiry/oireachtas hearing will be held & somebody will be asked a few hard questions, seg way to prime time debate & token soundbites from a few back benches & opposition TD's.

Some other news story will sweep in & this will fall down the pecking order & fade into the background.

We've been here recently with RTE bail out & children's hospital & as a nation of people we really don't give a pro or reactive **** to this sorta stuff, we'll all join the tut tut brigade, blame the gubberment or talk to Joe about it.

All of us should be contacting our elected representatives on this to the degree that their phones are on fire, inboxes are full, a line of appointments at constituency offices

As a nation (myself included) we don't demand answers enough...whatever it is in us we'll bitch amongst ourselves and

    "Shure look, isn't that it"

    We don't do accountability

How many people are currently homeless in this country?

A third of a million would have paid for a lot of hotel nights

It is not “perfectly reasonable” for members of Dail who are extraordinarily well paid to care more about rust on their bikes than helping their constituents

Especially as someone mentioned earlier there is covered parking area nearby they can use

    It was "in demand" pricing.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 29,984 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

It should not have cost a third of a million and far more people work in Leinster House than just TDs. Concept fine, execution poor. Unless you are suggesting we just stop all government spending on anything but homelessness? Maybe get rid of the tea and biscuits as well.

While you can point to general standards and behaviour in the OPW being within the politician's remit (and it is), they also won't have had anything to do with this particular project.

Complaining about the concept of building bike stands is wildly missing the problem.

In July Ivana Bacik was looking for more of them to be provided to be told by the Ceann Comhairle that those already in place were being under used.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,207 ✭✭✭thatsdaft

I rank homelessness much higher and more important societal issue than rich TDs keeping their bikes dry, especially when there is aparently already covered parking nearby for them

We spent 30 million on a 2km bike lane and a third of a million on a bike shed

All while citizens these politicians meant to represent remain homeless

Your “It is perfectly reasonable to want sheltered bike parking” comment is flippant and reeks of entitlement in light of more important issues this country faces, if any politician uses same line of argument you have made they would be politically crushed

oh, not this again. 'we must stop everything sensible and concentrate on housing' nonsense.

i will go out and berate the council workers outside who are repainting road lines, for not doing something about the homelessness crisis instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,207 ✭✭✭thatsdaft

For most of the history of this state keeping your bike in the rain was considered “sensible”

Feeling entitled to covered bike parking while being in top 5 percentile of earners is not “sensible” I won’t post the word that I would use to describe this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,663 ✭✭✭timmyntc

For most of the history of this state we were an impoverished backwater who could only dream of having bike shelters all over our cities and towns.

Instead bikes would rust and corrode into nothing

Why do so many assume ineptitude when it comes to matters like this and not something more sinister?

If you were auditing the accounts of a department in a company and saw they billed a delivery for 10 pizzas for a retirement event which you might ballpark the figure at around €200 but see they charged the company 30 times that amount for €6000 what would you think was going on there?

Because spending €600 for a basic pizza is on a scale of what's happened here relative to standard industry costs and installation. How could anyone believe someone approved and signed off on a €600 pizza had good and honest intentions when even a child would realise something wasn't quite right with that number?

Yeah. There shouldn't be too much flapping about this, just find out who signed of on the final cost instead of obfuscating and making a lot of noise for a long time in the hopes that people get bored.

    Typo

It's fairly obvious that too much was paid for this job but if we're talking numbers let's try to be realistic.

Ball park 300k was paid but there's literally no chance you'd get a job of that spec done on that site for 10k.

Your 30 x multiplier needs to be revised downward.

There is no charging facility for e-bikes or e-scooters, this is just a basic bicycle shed.

Its not even fit for purpose, it does not even protect the bicycles from the elements.

Sensori Facilities Management Ltd do a lot of contract work in Leinster house.

Someone in the O.P.W. needs to resign over this, its the cost of a house and we are in the middle of a housing crisis.

Took this photo this morning , not one bicycle in use or parked up. Madness.

Who is over the OPW, what minister, what department etc.,?

That amount of money is ridiculous

No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change this World

The car park is also near empty in that photo.

OPW and Resign your having a laugh. How there has not been a major investigation into how they do their business is unbelievable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,182 ✭✭✭mobby

Unreal.. what they have got away with over the years. There history book should be good if it ever sees the light of day.

I will take another photo on the 18th of September. Its such an embarrassment for the OPW and a waste of taxpayers money imo.
