Perhaps in Tubridy's mind, he's the Clark Kent of political journalists.

He might want to very carefull with this. As non resident he can not vote in any upcoming elections other then the senad election.

The 18 month rule only applies to citizens who are temporarily away from Ireland during the 18 months and intend on returning home permanently within the 18 months.

Slipping up to return home to vote would be a very easy mistake to make.

Not really doing himself any favours, criticising objects which are now part of the London skyline. His bosses at NewsUK may frown at that comment, may not go down well with some listeners either.

Yep, it is. But I don't mind as long as I don't have to pay for it anymore.

I think that could be AI generated/ photo chopped, it's not like Ryan to criticise anything.

It might well have been the most awful thing in London, but it’s had stiff competition since January of this year……

I didn't realise this post was lifted from the linked article, and I was wondering who is the oddball and why are they posting this crap. Holy ****, this is badly written twaddle.

It really is awful. No through thread. Just a little self agrandissing followed by some disconnected thoughts. You are not James Joyce Ryan. No one wants to read a stream of consciousness from you.

Had to laugh at Tub's assertion that he would "be happy to shoot the breeze with anyone" if instead of an aggressive tone, they just said to him "Hello Ryan, do you mind if I ask you about X, Y, Z!"

I guarantee you if anyone approached Tubs and brought up the RTE payments scandal with him, even in the politest way possible, there would be one of only two outcomes. If you had a phone camera on him, he would walk away. If you didn't have a phone camera on him, he would tell you to F Off and then walk away.

There are certainly people of integrity working in the media that would be happy to have it out with anyone who'd call their reputation into question or make allegations about them. Ryan isn't that guy. He knows he's wrong, he just doesn't care. Brass neck it out. Mainly though, he's above dealing with peasants in the street. He's on a first name basis with Hillary Clinton for God's sake! Why would he entertain the mulings of some idiot while out and about. The very idea!

I think he moderated a few of the Presidential Debates on TLLS and I think a maybe a Repeal Ref Debate.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

One of them in the 2011 election on the LLS but that's it. Miriam O'Callaghan moderated one RTE debate and the Pat Kenny/Frontline debate was infamous.

The political commentary angle seemed to have been an attempt by Tubridy to move beyond his light entertainment niche. The problem was that there were some heavy hitters in RTE at the time (Pat Kenny, Charlie Bird, David McCullagh, Miriam O'Callaghan) and his chances of that kind of rebranding were quite limited as they had regular contact and interviews with politicians. The LLS 2011 debate and the interview(s?) with Hillary Clinton were probably the highlights of that attempt to rebrand.

Wonder how Ryan feels about a member of the Kennedy family endorsing Trump. 😁

This thread is dying a death.

    Is Tubs working this week?

It appears he is gradually moving out of all our memories. Not living rent free in most heads now.

Pretty much we are now on the the exits and new hires at RTÉ, and how it moves on if it can.

the thread may be dying a death but the memory of his shameless trousering of 150k of our money certainly won’t. The man’s a cad

Has anyone been watching Manchán Magan's train travel series on RTE?

As I was thoroughly enjoying the second installment last night, where he went from Holland to Hungary, it struck me that Magan is the presenter and man of letters that Tubridy imagines himself to be in his own head……. A bookish, windswept bohemian, pondering the great works of literature as he scoffs down a rich dessert in the dining carriage.

Of course, Magan is aided by the fact that he is well travelled, knowledgeable on wide variety of topics, a curious and engaged interviewer, an award winning author and documentary maker and it seems fluent in at least 2 languages and probably comfortable in at least two more.

It's nice to see a presenter worthy of an all expenses paid trip on the license payer.

And he's made his way up from TG4 where he started out. I doubt that he would have even been considered for an RTÉ show a decade ago.

It's crazy how such a accomplished individual can be let lanquish in TG4 with it's tiny viewing figures, while opportunists with all the broadcasting skill and charisma of a discarded doner kebab can command cushy 1 hour radio shows and a 750k salary.

It's not what you know, it's who you know, of course. And who your agent is.

And how big of a shameless sleeveen you are, would also come into it.

Yep. I think he stole my idea though 😡. I met him about five years ago and told him I was thinking of doing just that. Then COVID came along and all my plans went out the window ☹️.

It's a very good programme alright. I might get around to it again in a few years.

It could be slightly better on the history/information side of things, a little closer to Portillo's programmes which are maybe too information heavy. But I suppose if this format is the only way a show like this gets aired on RTE, then I'll take it. It certainly beats the umpteenth celebrity chef being foisted upon us.

Twenty years ago, he was just doing the travel slot on the George Hook show. Dude is a grafter.

Same dynasty as Tubs really, I am not a huge fan, TBH down with this kind of thing :) One of his relatives is on Twitter always saying she was in RTÉ bullied and left a high position to go to the BBC, btw she was not Director of TV, but Director of TV production (still high but not as high as Director of TV, who was Cathal Goan at the time).

To be honest, he has a very similar background to Tubs. Swap Blackrock for Gonzaga, and Fianna Fail for Cumann Na Mban, Sean Tubridy for The O'Rahilly, Greek and Roman Civilisation in UCD for Irish and History in UCD.

Both are published authors, one more succesuful then the other.

Both renowed Ladies Men. Manchan breifly dated an unamed Hollywood starlet while in South America. Ryan dated multiple Roses of Tralee.

I guess the one difference is that one was handed a role in RTE, and the other worked there way up to a role in RTE.
