Yeah I think the whole country stopped to watch Friday and Saturday night.

It's funny how it lifts the spirits of a nation.

Not a clue, but ya the other 3 girls will be past peak for next Olympics you would think(maybe Charlene can maintain her form if she just specialised in the relay),as would Kelly Mcgory and Lauren cadden will be 28.We will some fresh blood for sure to be competitive in La.

China going to be top of the medal table by the looks of it. US girl beaten in the wrestling final and the volleyball team getting hammered by Italy.

It's great. The whole competition was so welcome as a diversion from a lot of stuff in the news. Not much other sport happening with GAA and rugby WC over and the premiership yet to start so it's great that it got our full attention.

    20 points. Fukin game on

It does look like Rhasidat will be the superstar of Irish sport for the next good few years, especially if she can continue to improve and lower her times. She's probably already at the level Sonia O'Sullivan was interest wise in the 1990s.

And Chiles of the USA stripped of a bronze in the gymnastics floor competition.

Phil Healy will be gone but 30 and 31 isn't too old for 400m assuming they've no bad injuries. It's just slightly past their peak. But really we need to find a world class talent to replace Phil Healy, I'm not denigrating her but she'll be 33 in '28.

One of the Jamaicans was 35. I think their anchor leg runner.

All over now that the Polish rider took 20

Her advertisements are all over Tiktok today.

In theory she should continue improving for 3 or 4 years and then hit her peak in LA.

She'll definitely be in lots of finals.

I'm hoping lots of kids of African heritage are turning up to their local athletics clubs. I hope lots of kids in general are doing so also.

I'd say that one will run and run for weeks if not months, most likely final outcome is that two bronze medals are awarded. The whole mess originated in Chile's routine having an incorrect difficulty being entered into the scoring system. The fact that the USA team took four seconds (!!!) too long to lodge an appeal is just daft. Expect some hand-wringing, and potential changes of rules and procedures.

    Yeah its certainly questionable.

Gillespie out herself in medal contention after getting a lap back early and was only a few points off the medals, but then she seemed to have nothing in the tank for the second half of the race as all her rivals picked up points and she slipped all the way down to 10th. It's what the studio pundit Irvine warned against, which is not to use up all your energy too early, a but naive perhaps. Then again you look at the Polish girl who seemed to contest every sprint and attack for almost the whole race, she must have had a few Red Bulls in her in advance of the race because it was incredible how she sustained it throughout the whole race.

    This is now looking likely!

Edit: Scratch that, at time of posting they hadn't women's omnium. Now looking possible but unlikely as I assume the US are heavy favourites in women's basketball?

    is it?

Surely the basketball is a certain gold for US

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 837 ✭✭✭hahashake

Yes, you would think so. At time of posting they hadn't won the omnium cycling gold.

Close to certain but it's a French team they face in the final medal game of the Olympics so you'd just never know.

I watched the full race and I just felt that the baton receiver on two of the exchanges was not going ‘near full pelt’ when receiving the baton. If my memory serves me right they were ‘half looking back’ to make sure that things were going ok rather than having the receiving hand back and looking straight forward while nearly full pelt. I felt that there was the equivalent of a slight hesitation in two of the baton exchanges. I wonder if it is on utube or equivalent.
Please do not think that I am trying to blame anyone here, - all 4 performed out of their skin and to the VERY BEST of their abilities on the day- I am just curious on a VERY TECHNICAL matter

Timmy Time! USA vs France for gold should be a good finish to this.

New Zealand with 20 medals. That's absolutely immense.

    EVENFLOW

Most of the rest of us too including Byrne. Pure genius setting a deadline for after you're dead. Removes the need for a lot of hard work and responsibility.

Incredible, and well spread out too. 5 track cycling, 4 rowing, 4 canoe, 2 athletics, 2 sailing and one each in golf, rugby sevens and triathlon.

Didn't know this until I saw your post. Ridiculous. Ya, rules are rules etc, but 4s outside the allowed window for appeal. That's a hollow medal for Romania. It's no way to win a medal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,938 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I really hope the USA win the medal table. If it was anybody else besides China as their competition I would be shouting for France.

Ugh, already feeling the post olympics misery. They could do with spreading it out over a month or longer rather than squeezing it all into 2 weeks… The thought of heading into the autumn with absolutely nothing on. Hopefully the US election will take my mind off it.

For any RTE fundamentalists, it's time to ditch them. Their coverage was awful compared to the iPlayer. Thankfully my work laptop has a UK VPN built into it but would definitely buy a month of VPN in future. 2 streams from 7am to 11pm, a really good player that you can watch back over anything, skip forward/back 20 seconds. No stone unturned, very little analysis/ad breaks. Don't know how I'm going to get the screen burn of Derval O'Rourke's skull off my television from having RTE on..

It's on Eurosport channel on YouTube.

Don't go near the RTE player. It's a disaster. You'll be watching ads for an eternity.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to opinionate. Maybe someone else can input.

It's difficult to be critical when they ran so well. GB and NL ran NRs and we were just behind them. France in 5th ran a NR also.

France and GB are traditionally strong in 400m.
