I thought she was fantastic. Different style than Sonia but the determination was evident throughout.

Becker is a good 2 seconds faster that any of her potential replacements. I'd be very shocked not to see Becker and Mawdsley both running barring injury.

I'd imagine the line up will be Becker- Healy- Cadden/McGrory- Mawdsley. In the best case scenario we get a good draw and our rivals have at least 1 or maybe 2 of their best team missing due to being in the 400m final and we might squeak through to a relay final.

It's Timmy time in the basketball. When he finally bows out from commentating, he could be replaced by an AI. You wouldn't know the difference 😆

Serbia and Australia wouldn't be top of my list of countries I'd want to see do well but from what I've seen of it this is a very enjoyable game

Not sure if those new to the speed climbing sport are aware but part of the reason the athletes are able to ascend so quickly is the wall unlike the other climbing events is a set route that was created in the early 2000s that is identical for every competition, so its been practiced on god knows how many times.

I have heard rumblings of the possibility of a new route being created but not sure if or when its likely to happen.

Looking at the events tonight in the Athletics,

Womens 200m, Gabby Thomas is in a league of her own. Alfred for second and a bit of a toss up for third. Most like Brittany.

Woems 3000m SC. I'm surprised Chepkoech is second fav for this. I think she'll win gold, Cherotich has a great chance for a medal i think (12/1)

Mens 1500m, I really fancy Ingebritsen to beat Kerr tonight. I think he is a better Athlete and he looks better than ever this year. He's not everyones cup of tea, but he had a tough childhood with his father now charged with abuse, so i hope he wins and i think he will

Womens Hammer is a two way fight between DeAnna and Camryn, but for an outside chance the Chinese athlete Zhao is a stupid price at 50/1 and worth a couple of quid for a medal

I think Jakob burns Kerr from 500 out and wins by 6-7 metres. But want Kerr to win

Jakob’s father sounds like an absolute toerag

I was at this, brilliant match with loads of drama and a super atmosphere in the arena.

Thanks for explaining that. I was wondering how they could have world record times as I assumed the walls would be different each time.

I agree wholeheartedly that Becker and Mawdsley should be first on the team sheet, as it were but Barr also got the nod ahead of Raftery, so in relay land, its not always a logical selection. Depending on the Womens 400m outcome, there's every chance that Coach Flo might not want Adeleke to run the relay. If she wins Gold, she has a big post competition schedule in one or all of Lausanne, Zurich and Rome. And they pay mighty fine for Olympic Gold medalists.

I'm sensing a photo finish and Kerr to take it. He's known that Jakob can only win one way and so did Wightman. The only thing that unnerved me for Josh was that he didn't look as powerful in the heats. Like he's lost a bit of weight. Indiscernible at times but he has looked like a more physical, powerful athlete, even at the trials.

Some absolute bangers in the commentary in the few minutes I watched

"He was looking for pebbles on the beach but he found....the rock"

"He's lost the ball... He's lost himself.. he doesn't know where he is... You're in the dursey arena, 2nd district, Paris... Quarter final of the Olympics"

"Look at the angle, look at the follow through, like a swan.... YOU'RE A SWAN!"

I'd be stunned, absolutely stunned if Rashidat doesn't run the final if we qualify. I think she would have to be injured not to run it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,231 ✭✭✭✭normanoffside

Adeleke will definitely not run the relay heat as the 400m final is in the same day but I am sure she would run the final if we made it without her.

Yeah, but it's taking the p*ss; the licence fee AND ads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,362 ✭✭✭Sigma101

.. AND an additional €725 million of taxpayers money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,737 ✭✭✭✭blueser

Laughable. Only, it actually isn't remotely funny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,186 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

I won't go too far that rabbit hole, but in general their coverage has been atrocious (from what i saw of it) Be it that analyst guy for the Swimming, the clueless commentators (Hugh Cahill primarily) the incessant ad breaks every 15 minutes (ad breaks are between 4 & 6 minutes) , i could go on. I am watching primarily EUROSPORT and a bit of BBC. EUROSPORT Coverage is fantastic.

Discovery+ is 6.99 for the month and gives you everything on demand. Be a better use of your time than screaming into the void.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,737 ✭✭✭✭blueser

I have Discovery+. But I'm also a taxpayer and pay for the TV licence. I think, therefore, that I'm entitled to pass comment on the p*sstake that is RTE. But thanks for your input.

Very fine performance by the 4 women in the track pursuit; many years trying to get to this level and now a national record in the qualifiers; 8 of the 10 squads make the next round so fingers crossed. Kelly Murphy put in a huge turn at the 3/4 point that brought us back on terms, interesting to see where we end up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,517 ✭✭✭bren2001

Seems like its not something that would bother you if you have Discovery+. You'd hardly be watching on RTE would ye?

Personally, their coverage has been good. Covered all Irish athletes as much as possible. Covered most of the major events except when clashing with Irish athletes. My only complaint would be they spend too much time in the studio at times. Considering I've gotten the Champions League, Euros, the Olympics, and a lot of the GAA this year alone, I think they do a great job on sports.

The time France is putting in now is terrifyingly more quick then Ireland

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,186 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Seriously? You must be joking. Their EURO coverage was ******* awful. And i mean that in the sense of their commentary teams were even worse than what they have at the Olympics. Their sports presenters are all sub-par also. In fairness Cantwell isn't as bad as the rest.

I'll give them credit for their Horse Racing (When that other clown(Cahill) doesn't present it and League of Ireland (when they can bother their arse to show it)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,855 ✭✭✭ILikeBoats

The Canadians just pipped us there unfortunately.

The bell ringer messed that one up!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,517 ✭✭✭bren2001

Their EURO coverage was ******* awful

They showed every match, what more do ye want?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 674 ✭✭✭klr87

That was bizarre in the women's team pursuit: The Canadians did 2 (500m) more laps than required, as the bell didn't ring when it should have. They still beat Ireland's time though for the 4km.

It's been pointed out over and over. Some people are just purposely hate watching RTE.

Womens skatepark is fun! One of them is just 13!! Seriously talented.

So; you're saying that because I have access to alternative coverage, I'm not entitled to comment on the black hole that is RTE's finances? Which is funded by me, you, and every other taxpayer/licence fee payer? Riiiight.
