It really is. Its also mad that the Korean women who won gold yesterday extended a 36 year unbeaten streak - Korea have won gold in the event at every Olympics since 1988

That privileged sh!t should be scrapped from the Olympics IMO

Nice interview from Tom Pidcock, seemed upset that he got boo-ed from the French crowd. Says more about the French than him. Well done Tom, great performance and recovery from a puncture

Whatever about showing non-stop horse and boxing coverage, could they at least cut down on the analysis? Everytime I turn the television on I see some clown trying to either hype-up or give a postmortem on something.

Cant wait to have Dervla O'Rourke's head screen-burned into the display once the athletics start…

I'll stick with BBC for the Athletics. Their pundits and especially their commentary team are excellent.

Yes, I watch mostly on the iPlayer and it is very good coverage, with multiple streams. God-forbid RTE gives some choice in what we watch. Should really have given them 850 million instead of 750 million

Sadly in this country we all have to bow to the horsey sht because something something do you not know how many people it employs something something.

They lost their sht when the FAI pointed out how little of the betting share they command now.

Men's Skiff down to 2nd place after race 6 of 12. Came 8th while Aussies won it.

RTE buy a 200-hour live package from Discovery, and afaik have to agree in advance what is shown. This is then fed directly from Olympic Broadcasting Services to RTE. It's a tailored package specifically for Ireland, and other EU/EBU countries will get a similar package tailored for them. I don't believe RTE have the right to flick a switch and say 'this event is no longer what we want, move to something else'. Or at least there's definitely a limit to how much they can change.

So you'll sometimes end up with an event that RTE chose because Ireland might potentially get a medal, but we get to the final stages and there is no prospect of a medal or even an Irish athlete remaining.

It's not ideal, but that's the nature when a behometh holds the rights and RTE just gets whichever minimum coverage that the EU forces on Discovery via the reserved sports list.

Thanks for that explanation, pity such posts cannot be stickied!

Yep, this is it. And of course you'd trust RTE to pick horseshit primarily and not show fast action/moving sports. Do they even have a "today at the games" type show? where they can show sports not shown during their daytime coverage(just checked there, they don't)

They are piss poor at EVERYTHING they throw their hand to. From presenters (in fairness, she's the best out of the three others ladies they have) to commentators to coverage.

    Useless fcuks

At least it's an explanation and not just incompetence.

Canoeing is good entertainment, fast and competitive. Even the best can screw it up too.

I believe the Olympics rights switch to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in 2028, meaning RTE will have far more freedom in what they can broadcast and will also be allowed live stream events.

That'd be great if true. The last time the EBU had primary coverage was 2012 (maybe 2014 but the winter renewal kinda passes me by) and it was epic - flick onto their free website and pick your live event from the ~20 on offer at any time.

Pity 2028/32 are in a wonky timezone (LA not completely terrible for nightowls though)

That's mad. The Cameroon canoeist was cutting it fine going through those gates. It looked like he had set the 2nd fastest time, but he's been given a 50 second penalty for missing gate 9 and goes from hero to zero.

-8 & +10. Tough going. +10 in Brissie suits my sleeping pattern better

**** It, that penalty fucked him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,616 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

That was looking so good for Liam Jegou, it just went slightly wrong at the end, he lost a little time and picked up a 2 second penalty.

He's in 3rd place at the moment, but the commentators think it'll be hard for him to keep that with others still to go.

Tough for Jegou…went for it and came unstuck at the end

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,616 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

That's one of the favourites out of the running after picking up a 50 second penalty.

Excellent run from Burgess looking good for another GB medal.

Very frustrating possible medal there for Jegou.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,616 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

I thought Burgess was gone after that mid course mistake. But he's finished top, so Jegou is out of the medals now.

Trave had a similar run to Jegou. Both will be gutted, any mistake is so costly.
