@Jordan 199 That was a great game. The Still wakes the deep. You said it was good so I said I should try it.

I missed a decent amount of achievements in this game as I like to go into games blind. On another note I now have 116000 Gamerscore. I could have had more only I stopped gaming for a few years and then got into PC gaming for two years or so before moving back to Xbox.

Deku Deals is very good for searching game sales and they do PS and Xbox now too ...

Been using it for a while since seeing a recommendation for it on here before. Also tells you if a game is on gamepass or psplus, plus highlights if game on sale is at its lowest ever price

Playing through The Case of the Golden Idol on game pass, very good. Very similar to, but not as good as, Obra Dinn, but it does give you that same "AHA! I'm a genius!" feeling, after hours of "What am I not seeing? I'm an idiot!".

Right, saw the mention of Obra Dinn and instantly intrigued. Looked it up and saw it's coming to PlayStation this week and it reminds me of one of my favourite games of all time, The Detective Game on Commodore 64. Watching the trailer, i can see the similarities with the Obra Dinn but when you say not as good, is it just not as clever? OD is a genius game so high standard anyway but very interested in anything that even comes close.

Golden Idol is very good fun but I do think it lacks the sheer elegance of Obra Dinn. I do think some levels turn a bit more into pixel hunts and guesswork at times - or at least more often than Obra Dinn did. But it’s lots of fun still, a satisfying ‘detective game’, and hopefully plenty of improvements for the imminent sequel.

In the final stretch of Baldurs Gate 3. I've still made most of the same decisions again (though foreknowledge of some events and some better dicerolls have led to different outcomes), and also encountered a lot of new stuff that I somehow missed the first time (which is weird because it felt like I explored every inch of the maps the first time round), but the Dark Urge also helped add a lot of new stuff too. Not a lot, it wasn't as prominent as I thought it would be and bar a big moment in both Act 1 & 2, it doesn't really affect too much until Act 3 and even then it doesn't add a whole lot especially as I was trying to Resist it the whole way, but it was still a nice addition that helped freshen things up.

Got through the game in about half the time of my first playthrough. I still did most of the side content though I wasn't scavenging or searching as much or trying to open every single chest and backpack as I had a fair idea on my builds and what items/weapons I needed and where. Pretty much only used Shadowheart, Laezel and Karlach for the entire game (with me as wizard for spells/AoE's). Laezel is a beast, I can't believe I only started using her towards the end of my first playthrough, she really dominates with the number of attacks she can use. Karlach too, though when it comes to "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take", she still missed about 50% of the ones she did.

I nearly want to try quickly burst through another playthrough but this time not as a spellcaster (maybe try Paladin) and using a different team (I don't even think I levelled most of the other characters past Lvl 4 other than Astarion for his side-quest fights), but I did pull the trigger and buy Divinity Original Sin 2 for PS5, so probably better if I jump into it instead.

I am just done with Elden DLC and followed up with Demon's Souls. Still on a bit of a soulsborne buzz so looking up ones that are cheap or on gamepass.

Saw Flintlock, has anyone given it a bash, seems middling with reviews but I am pretty much at a loss of what to be playing

Nioh and Lies of P are probably the closest other developers have gotten it seems.

And you also don't have to put up with the arrogant art and tone changes bluepoint made to demons souls.

I would say as a counterpoint regarding Demons Souls, that having never played the original while there may be things missing or changed in the remake, it's still a fantastic, atmospheric and brilliant game to play and you don't really notice what might be missing or might have been changed bar QoL stuff.

Not saying the original isn't better, but if you never played the original the changes Bluepoint made feel indiscernible.

Think I'm having PTSD from TLOU2, The US Elections, the latest Catholic Church revelations, Crowdstrike shenanigans, the weather, controller drift, 30 FPS games, ..

Time to finish off Super Mario Wonder. The main game is very easy, but I've yet to do any of the extra content.

Demon’s Souls by Bluepoint is stunning looking. Better than Elden Ring in parts. I never played the original but I loved it

I guess my biggest issue with it isn't really its fault, it's just that it makes me want to play Obra Dinn for the first time again. It's a definite recommendation, especially for anyone that liked OD.

As you say, OD is genius tier, and so far, Golden Idol hasn't hit those same heights. It's still fun, and a definite break from the usual, and I'm really enjoying it.

OD is just so far ahead though, and the design of Golden Idol kinda makes it impossible for it to get there. The set up of discrete "cases" means that you don't feel the same connection to what's going on, so instead of feeling like you're pulling back the layers of a single huge mystery, it's more "game" like. It also means that there's no atmosphere built up, no dramatic music when you trigger another cut scene, etc. I loved walking around that ship.

It's technically stunning but some of the changes are really bad. Like they changed a lot of the models to be more... Edgy... When that doesn't make sense in terms of tone and setting. Stuff like the fat official being covered in boils and warts when he is just just fat in the original because he represents the wealthy aristocracy. There's details added to the environment that don't make sense, like adding junk to the castle walls when the walls are quite clearly built for defence and not the kind of flourishes you saw in say renaissance Venice. And then theres the tower of Latria which has a totally different atmosphere due to the singing being a constant presence when it's meant to be triggered by proximity (and kind of has a gameplay affect as well as you are meant to seek out the singing).

And don't get me started on the soundtrack. The strong mediaeval instrumentation and vocals that are quite simple so as to standout as replaced by the worst kind of overproduced Hollywood music.

It is stuff you wouldn't notice if you haven't played the original but if you have, well I found it really stood out and was jarring.

I used to admire blueprints work but their remake output has been technically excellent and also kind of awful artistically as they try to add their own interpretations and additions rather than building upon the original vision.

If there was a way to play the original demons souls in 60 fps I wouldn't touch the remake. And I still would probably recommend the original warts and all if you had a way to play it.

Oh and they absolutely ruined "Maiden Astrea" which is one of the best pieces of music out of the From games, which is turns ruins the moment in the game when it's played.

Yeah I can't deny or rebut any of that because it's just not obvious without having played the original. The only thing that really stood out to me watching video comparisons of some areas is the lighting in World 5 is a hell of a lot better in the Remake which probably takes away from the dark, dankness of the original where it looks like you can barely see anything. But I think if someone hasn't played the original, Demons Souls is a terrific game to play and is still one of the best-looking and sounding PS5 games.

I think every 1:1 remake should have a Halo Collection style graphical toggle - keep the original vision intact with the higher frame rate, but let the new developers play around a bit more with the modern architecture to take advantage of the new tech.

I do think Bluepoint are technical wizards (seriously among the best in the business, and they have been since their miracle Titanfall port and MGS releases) who have made a few questionable art choices in reinterpreting two of the most canonical games of all time. I can see how they get there - a remake of that type is a thankless task in many ways - but they’re two games with such distinct visions and tones it stands out more than with many other titles that have been remade more radically. I’m glad they’re making an original title next.

That said, I think SoTC feels a touch more compromised than Demon’s Souls as I think that game’s art is even more particular and distinctive. In most ways DS is 1:1 in terms of gameplay and level design, and the few gameplay tweaks are almost uniformly positive. While I find it frustrating the art and presentation were changed in the ways they were, I do think having a silky smooth 60FPS, high fidelity version of the game makes it hard to recommend the older version over it. Even as a purist, those PS3 frame rates are hard to go back to. But again, in an ideal world we’d have the option to play a more aesthetically faithful version or the newer graphical makeover rather than having to compromise.

Who knew an oil rig would be so big.(well not massive, but still bigger than you think) Note, I was never on an oil rig but if still wakes the deep is accurate they are bigger than they look from the pictures as you approach them.

Girlfriend used to work on a gas platform. They are like small towns with stuff like games rooms, gyms, canteens etc. for the workers that are there over a few days.

EDF6 out today and I'm too broke until pay day to afford it.

Really looking forward to playing Arranger which is out tomorrow.

Looks like a really intriguing puzzle game with an old school moving grid mechanic. It's from former Braid, Carto and Ethereal developers and the artwork really is beautiful.

Reviews have been very warm so far with Eurogamer giving it 4/5.

EDF6 intro: "...ADMIST (sp) the chaos…"

    Me: this gonna be good.

I mean they couldn't even spell check the first thing you see in the game. And then you are greeted with the worst voice acting in the worst tutorial ever.

Anyway EDF6 is awesome once it lets you start killing things. It's actually a big visual improvement over 5 but to put that into context it looks like a PS2 game with a PS4 texture pack instead of an up rezzed PS2 game.

SpongeBob SquarePants Battle for Bikini bottom rehydrated is brilliant, surprisingly. I started it last Sunday and have been playing every evening this week. Can't wait to pump a few hours into it tomorrow.

Sorry to drag the discussion off topic, but I saw a consumer rights initiative for gamers a while ago that I thought deserves some air time

    https://www.stopkillinggames.com/

The idea is pretty simple, they're lobbying several governments to introduce laws that require studios to leave games in a playable state after they end support. This is largely to prevent situations like The Crew where the game servers get shut down and the game is literally unplayable for everyone who bought it

Anyway, they have an EU citizens initiative open. If they reach 1 million signatures then it'll have to be considered by the EU commission

If anyone would like to see better consumer protection for gamers then I'd encourage you to sign the petition and spread the good word
