And he's handed off to her by the first woman who was tasked with leading him out of the kitchen. Why can't he be trusted to walk around by himself?

Jesus but he looks absolutely terrible there. No way he's able for a campaign. What is the problem with the Dems that they didn't find a younger candidate and organise a transition in that time? That's a **** show.

Is anyone watching the RNC? The speeches are so bad. Like they were written by teenagers with ambitions, but no experience of real life. I know we have problems over here, but they're just weird. Votes Healy Rae

    Latest betting odds

    Trump 4/11

    Harris 7/2

    Biden 8/1

They somehow though that they could "Weekend at Bernies" Biden all the way up to November. It's the same disconnection from reality we saw in 2016, Hilary didn't even have a concession speech.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,308 ✭✭✭calculator

How could they not learn though? The Republicans seem so unimpressive. I know American politics is different to ours, but they really sound like complete idiots. How on earth could you not come up with a credible candidate against them? I really find it so shocking how inarticulate they are, and I assume they've been preparing for these speeches for quite a while. But I suppose they deserve what's coming their way if the best they could do was a choice between Trump or Biden.

They have sleepwalked right into this. A notion that somehow Biden wouldn't decline further. I like Biden, but he was far too old and gone two years ago and that's when they needed to be taking this seriously instead of sticking to whatever archaic playbook that stipulates you can't change incumbent or whatever pre-Trump nonsense that is no longer relevant

Many middle Americans don't see him making next Tuesday let alone being strong enough to run the country for the next 4 years.

Yes! But surely there were plenty in the party that could see that? It's not like he aged overnight! I just find really strange that they didn't 'manage him out', given his age and the gaffs. And looking at the competition here, it's not like you'd need to come up with an Einstein! I've watched too much West Wing....

This has very little to do with "The Dems" and I don't know why people continue to talk about the issue as if there is some secret cabal that selects the nominee.

Biden shouldn't have run again, but there is nothing anyway can do to stop a sitting President from running again. Once he ran no one serious wanted to run against him but people did run against him and there was absolutely zero support for them. The public pronouncements about him stepping aside are relatively unprecedented and bring as strong pressure as they possibly can, but there is still nothing they can actually force about the situation.

For sure, American politics is far too deferential to seniority. The behaviour around Feinstein was an absolute travesty and everyone who claimed she deserved not to be replaced should hang their heads in shame. But there really is not a lot that could have been done about the Biden situation as long as he was determined to run.

Conflicting reports on whether Biden will end his campaign or just tell everyone **** off. He seems to be in angry mode of late.

Now that he has Covid maybe he will just hide away and ignore all the calls for him to step down.
He looked absolutely knackerd walking around that Mexican restaurant.

It’s over for the Joe Show.

There’s not a hope in hell he’ll be the party’s nominee. Anyone on here want to take a bet on this? Say a month of no posting? That’s how confident I am he’s going to drop out.

It could well be "The Dems" don't have a choice.

Biden could be the best chance they have.

The alternatives are not great. America don't have a notion of giving a woman the top job, let alone a woman of color. I'd imagine we are a fair few elections away from that happening. So that rules out Kamala.

So realistically that leaves Newsom. Who certainly has aspirations of a White House bid, but I very much doubt he wants to walk into this shít show and will bide his time for 2028 unless he can be convinced otherwise.

So the likes of Schiff calling for Biden to step aside has not offered any credible alternative, unless he wants it himself.

Also Schiff saying Biden is not up to the job whilst also saying he will support him regardless won't work with voters.

"The Dems" are spectacular fúcking this up which is hilarious when you watch the creepy horror show that is the RNC convention, which looks like an episode of Black Mirror inspired by the Stepford Wives directed by Jordan Peele.

Biden struggles to walk and can barely speak at times. Biden is definitely not the their best chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 42,959 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

What data have you seen that suggests that?

Kamala by virtue of being a woman of color is probably at this point in time in America unelectable.

Newsom is not naïve enough to go for it. IMO. Now he could be convinced otherwise, who knows.

You can point to polls with virtual match ups, but that is pretty much folly if it comes to the crunch.

Forget that the democrats don't either have a popular candidate or willing one to replace him, there is consequences to Biden saying he can't run because of ill health.

The Republicans will immediately go down the 25th amendment route which will dominate the news cycle and again keep Trump and Vance out of the spotlight.

This could just be an election they can't win.

I imagine the crisis talks happening in Europe at the moment is off the charts.

    Nah, he should go.

Someone younger should come in, then the other side can’t complain about someone old running.

Warming to Kamala or Gavin Newson.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,107 ✭✭✭EltonJohn69

@2:11 he can barely speak, interviewer left baffled by what he is saying. This Joe Biden is not going to turn around an election.
Dems need a candidate who can walk and who can talk…. That’s not asking much.

Well no "Dems" need a candidate who beats Trump. That is what 21 of them have publicly declared.

Very simple question, who is that candidate?

Kamala would be the the automatic choice, do you think America would elect her president?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,107 ✭✭✭EltonJohn69

Yes I think they could elect her. If her campaign has a clear message and she communicates it well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 42,959 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

I completely disagree, she has a lower approval rating than Biden. And she is a woman of color, not a hope America will elect that.

Newsom with a new VP pick is the only chance they have and even then it's not great.

Newsom will do what is best for him and that is 2028.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,800 ✭✭✭McFly85

Thing is, they will find something else about the new candidate to relentlessly complain about.

The obvious choice if he were to go is Harris but regardless of age I’m sure Trump would prefer to run against her, America doesn’t seem ready to vote for a female minority President. MAGA types will scream DEI and Trump will go with the angle of having the experience to do the job again.

I do find the relentless calls in the media for ‘someone else’ a little disingenuous when it’s followed by ‘doesn’t matter who, someone young would easily win’. Part of me feels there’s many that would love Biden out of the way simply because there’s very little to attack him about outside of being old, and the only thing Trump has managed to do is outright lie when comparing presidencies.

There’s legitimate concerns about Biden being able to do another 4 years but replacing him isn’t as simple as it’s being made out to be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,483 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Biden could win, it is a two horse race, Trump \ Vance could score own goals.
I can't see Biden's approval ratings going up much. Harris in the spotlight might be able to shift the dial.

Skipping over VP Harris may damage support with female and African American Democrat voters. Newsom with 'not great' chances doesn't seem worth risking that.

Who will do a better job at getting Democrats out to vote, not just for the Presidency, but down ticket votes also… at the moment I'd be inclining to Harris on that over Biden also.

And if they stick with Harris, she would have access to funds raised on the combined ticket possibly.

She might get elected she might not. It’s no certainty though far more likely than Biden on my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 42,959 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

far more likely than Biden on my opinion.

    That's a pig in a poke though.

Think about it logically, far too many unprecedented glass ceilings need to be broken for that happen. In normal times it would be an outside chance, add in the fact the Democratic Party are in full on free fall crisis. The odds get longer and longer.

If the Democrats had a credible VP who had an actual chance of winning, Biden would already be gone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,107 ✭✭✭EltonJohn69

Electoral demographics are valid discussion but Biden is a frail weak old man that has to be lead around a restaurant, struggles to handle stairs and losses his train of thought during softball interviews. Biden is fundamentally a broken candidate.

Obama was elected and was black. Hillary would have most likely been elected if it wasn’t for Comey/fbi investigation. Colour and gender aren’t some insurmountable factors.

Barrack was a man and a great orator.

Hilary was white and still lost.

It's not just America it is the world over who do not elect women to the highest positions, we are no different here.

Fair enough, you have your opinion and I have mine. If Harris is the dems nominee we will see how she does.
