Yeah I've had a similar experience. There was such a culture of absolute corruption at McLaren under Ron Dennis, whether it was conducting corporate espionage and stealing Ferrari's blueprints, having drivers deliberately lie to stewards to get opponents penalised, the secret third pedal etc. They did have some likeable drivers at times like Hakkinen and Raikkonen but it was really hard to get behind the team with Ron Dennis at the helm.

After going through the stint of Whitmarsh and the return of Dennis, when Zak finally came in it felt like a breath of fresh air and I really liked where he took the team and was a fan at first. But the more you see of Zak over the years though the more dislikeable he is. Whether it's the constant mouthing off and bullshitting, the palling around with Trump, the mistreatment of drivers in Indy, he's a really easy guy to dislike.

I do still like the team currently though, I respect figures like Stella and particularly like their two drivers right now and want to see them achieve.

To be fair to Brown, the Trump thing was foisted on them by F1, they didn't ask for him to be in their garage.

And to give him his credit, he's turned the team around and look at their sponsor list too. Not bad…

He's done a great job turning it around. No doubting that.

Fair play to him if so, he must be annoyed with his chances lately, arguably faster in Canada and Max won, lost by less than a second to him in Imola, looked good to beat Max on merit in Austria and they collided, on another day he could be 4 victories into this season but he “only” has 1.

If McLaren keep up the pace and Lando learns from these near misses they will go only one way IMO.

Mercedes could be switching to Adidas for next season.

They were with Puma for a long time, so it will be cool to see adidas join the sport.

AM close to securing Newey it seems

Not surprised he got a drive. Assuming it goes well he could be a replacement for Lewis at ferrari

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,215 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

I'd assume that's Ferrari longterm plan. What will Lewis give? max 3 years i reckon. He'll know within the first few months of new regs if he'll ever get that next championship he wants

Yeah hopefully Lando will learn from this, he didn't cover himself in glory with his attempts to overtake Max and probably let his frustration get the better of him in the end. A cooler head last Sunday might have seen him make the pass without any contact as he has a faster car with DRS.

That's not to absolve Max of his share of the blame either

Most commentators/analysts in all sports exhibit bias but those on Sky F1 are not entirely pro - brit. Croft, for example, is clearly a big Max fan but not an admirer of Hamilton.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,215 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Crofty has always remained unbiased doing his job, and having watched hundreds of Grand Prix with him commentating I couldn’t tell you who his favourite driver is.

And my problem with sky is not with their bias, it’s their anti- bias against red bull and max which has been ever present for close on 4 years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭chicorytip

    That's a moot point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,494 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Simon Lazenby is particularly annoying with his bias.

Your kidding right. Lando did nothing wrong. Max was the cause of their coming together. I am a Max fan and will say when he was wrong and on Sunday he was totally in the wrong.

I think it was on the coverage for Austria where the presenters on Sky (Can't remember her name off the top of my head) mentioned at least once that there were 2 British drivers in the top 3 and they're a British broadcaster and that's why they were devoting coverage time to them. First time they've actually mentioned it on air so I assume they must've got some complaints about their coverage being overly focussed towards the British drivers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,095 ✭✭✭Captain_Crash

I don’t think he’s placing any blame on Lando, just saying he was a little aggressive and went for a move that prob wasn’t on. The contact is still on Max but Lando could (and should imo) have bailed out and taken him on the next straight. None of the greats would have attempted that move there, Lando will learn no doubt.

Interestingly there is some good analysis on Sky giving a fairly unbiased and honest review of the incident, no surprise it’s Jenson at the helm. I can’t link it but it’s near the top of the app if anyone has it.

Sainz to alpine being reported now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,015 ✭✭✭✭PsychoPete

Rumoured that alpine will be using Merc power units so that might be enough get Sainz

    Line ups gradually getting solved

Red Bull - Max and ??? I dont think they stick with Checo but they go after if not???

Merc - Likely to take Antonelli with Russell

    Ferrari - LeC and Hamilton

    AM - Alonso and Stroll

    McLaren - Lando and Oscar

    VCarb - Yuki and Ric

    Haas - Bearman and Ocon

    Alpine - Sainz and Gasly

    Williams - Albon and ???

Audi Stake - Hulk and ???

Bottas back to Merc is floated on SM but he also is in talks to stay with Stake/Kick/Audi

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,669 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

sounds like Ocon has signed for Haas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,494 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

You have to assume Bottas to whichever team Sainz doesn't join.

But Perez is the unknown now, he's not getting better and at some point red bull might need to do something. My assumption is if they do pull the trigger on switching him, Perez will lose seat and not be moved to RB. If that happens then you see Lawson coming in somewhere, and it's likely a decision of whether Lawson or Ricciardo go to red bull and the other in rb.

Sort of related - is there a mechanism available to red bull to test their drivers in the same car? It'd be interesting if they could do a shootout between the drivers to see who has the underlying pace. They used do it in the testing days, but with the testing ban I assume this isn't possible now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,015 ✭✭✭✭PsychoPete

If RedBull do dump Checo you couldn't justify giving the seat to Ricciardo on current form when Tsunoda has being driving a lot better and has arguably earned a shot at it. I'm sure RedBull have Lawson,Ricciardo and Tsunoda on the sim

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,494 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Tsunoda will never get the red bull seat. For whatever reason it just won't happen. If they ever wanted him it would have happened already. My guess is he's there because of Honda, and while his performances have been good his temperament is still a worry - I couldn't see him being the best team mate if himself and Max were driving side by side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,015 ✭✭✭✭PsychoPete

I don't think Tsunoda would pay second fiddle to Verstappen which would cause issues, Redbulls driver programme is pretty bad tho, do they even know what they are doing. Horner has the delusion that he can get the 2018 Ricciardo back, a very talented driver in Lawson just sitting on the sidelines, they've no intentions of promoting Tsunoda and Checo was awful last year then they give a new contract after a few races. I think it's only a matter of time before Ferrari and Mclaren catch them in constructors as it doesn't look like Verstappen can win it on his own again this year

I think Red Bull should get Carlos into that 2nd seat as soon as possible. Let's face it Perez has has his chance and even the new contract has not helped so it's time for him to go. Carlos is the best driver there is out there at the moment for that 2nd Red Bull seat.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.
