My intention is to replace the manual on and off function, as I don't have fixed times to turn on and off.

I did this about 6 years ago. Controls the gas heating.

Use a relay with 240v coil and contact's.

Use a smart plug to power on the relay with 240v.

Connect the timer contact's to the relays contact's.

Works very well.

You could also use a smart relay like a sonoff unit, a one with the contact's isolated from the input power. But at the time. I just used what I had at hand.

Yiu can use something like Google nest or any one zone smart app timer.

If it's part of gas boiler don't go messing yourself. Often even when timer off the boiler still has power to enable it to switch off gracefully.

Ideally you need something with temperature detection as temperature is as important as time if not more. You want boiler to come on less on hot days rather than overheating the house on fixed times.

If going all out try get a plumber to set up zone controls, add thermostatic valves to every radiator and insulate, insulate, insulate.
