Why leave the turret on ?

It'd drop the weight massively if the turret were removed ,

But the turtles arent all dumb , the era is relatively useless set back from the "turtle shell "anyway , and if its carrying troops inside the shell they could be goosed by an an era explosion

Last year i thought the Ukrainians should use a seriously uparmoured old tank - with no turret, and mine rollers ,or plows , (possibly even remote controlled ) ,to breach minefields -

Losing half a dozen , otherwise redundant tank hulls to bring valuable armour to bear in close quarters combat could be a very cheap move

Zelensky said if you are not fighting then you must be in Ukraine working, that pays the soldiers, keeps the economy going.

Anything else is undermining the war effort. Unpalatable as that truth is.

If they win the tournament do they bring the winnings home? I'd imagine so, and pay tax etc on it. What's wrong with that?

Oleksandr Usyk beating Tyson Fury is a perfect example of why athletes and artists can be exempt from fighting if they wish to be. You can't put a price on the effect a major win in competition does for morale. russians are just raging they can't flood the world with juiced up athletes now anyway.

I think it's important that despite being at war, Ukraine must keep operating as a normal country as best it can under the circumstances. Aside from everyone doing their day-to-day jobs, sending sportspeople and musicians abroad to do what they always do is important in a less direct way than being part of the war effort.

Ukraine's ability to function despite being constant victims of russian terrorism is a massive show of defiance and should be encouraged.

If putin saw that a commander of moskovyte forces had not done their job in protecting the troops under their command they probably would be getting a promotion.

In fairness he was in command of sending Ukrainian troops across the Dnipro river a while back, with little to no support.

They formed a bridgehead for a bit but it was ridiculous and a suicide mission and I remember reports of huge losses.

    Not surprised he’s gone.

This has to be a prime example of Russia's gangster regime. Not enough to destroy most of Mariupol, steal what's left as well.

But Lord Putin promised us peace!

And also salvation from horrific things like rainbow flags and women with short hair, but let's leave it at that.

Crimea is a "War Zone", would you go sun bathing in an official war zone ….I think not…Plus….the ATACAMS that got hit were headed towards a legitimate military target….the moronic Ivans shot it down over the beach \ coastal area.

Lastly, Crimea is Ukrainian, so no, Russians should not be having their cheap Sun holiday there….unless they want to risk potentially getting caught up in a cross fire…..and if they do, well that's their fault then.

"Russia keeps up pressure on front line as Ukraine continues to wait for military aid"

This the header in independent today, but why the relentless negative coverage of Ukraine war by irish and other media, they seem to be going out of their way to present an overly negative angle. Yet on the ground we know that the tide has turned back ukraine favour as plenty of weapons are now arriving and the Russians are being pushed back out of kharkiv area as ukraine now striking into Russia with himars and hitting air defences successfully in crimea.

What is the media at, is I because generally they come from a left wing bias they do not want to see a major defeat of Russia as that would turn all their pre conceived ideas about the rise of China and global South and fall in Western Power up on its head again just like in 1989. The left still have not recovered from the collapse of soviet union

And the Ukrainian football team, why aren't they in the trenches?

And that female Ukrainian fencer, shouldn't she be lending a hand?

Zelensky, I know he's the leader, but if they need troops so badly why isn't he out there fighting?

In fact WhY isnT eVerY SiNglE UkrAInIan FiGhTing?

    I'm just asking concerned questions

Sports people portray the human side of a nation, actors also, but Ukrainian actors in the western world would be rare. Whereas Russia do not think Ukraine should exist, a visible presence of athlete's going about their business proves that the world accepts Ukraine as a nation. They do have their role to play.

Well they can't all go to the frontlines obviously. But there is a need for lots of support work in Ukraine and really all Ukrainians who have exited the country for whatever reason should be taking a long hard look at their own situation after 2 years. Asking themselves and their communities what can they do to help their state back home. You can't really expect others to help you if you're not prepared to do your own bit.

Sorry, but you are utterly deluded if you think the media here has any left wing slant at all. RTE pining for the fall of the Soviet Union? Get a grip.

Everybody out working and doing their thing means taxes are collected and soldiers are paid.

We get it. Most Ukrainians abroad I know are contributing, sending money back home, donating, etc.

If Ireland were attacked in the way Ukraine was attacked, half of you would be abroad. It's an utterly brutal war, people don't want to die in trenches and be tortured and castrated by Russians. And if someone thinks they can all go back and get some cushy "logistics" job, or polish Spitfires to "do their bit", it doesn't work like that.

As a whole they have been extraordinarily brave in the face of a horrendous invasion, it just gets tiresome to see individuals suggesting that every athlete and living being needs to be in the trenches because they suspect that they aren't "doing their bit".

I'd like to see Chechens in their thousands marching on the Kadyrov mansion and dethroning him and his family…and Chechnya gaining independence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,044 ✭✭✭jmreire

Any Ukrainian competing in any events of any description especially international ones, and flying the Ukrainian Flag is doing their bit to help Ukraine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,290 ✭✭✭amandstu

They are also at risk in a high profile role.

Sadly we know the depths to which Putin goes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,395 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Grand but obviously they don't necessarily need to be 'in trenches and be tortured and castrated by Russians'. That's just emotive excuse making. An army needs a whole productive citizenry behind it, fulfilling all sorts of background roles related directly or indirectly to the war effort. Society needs to function behind the lines.

Sending a few bob back to families whilst living abroad is useful I'm sure but doesn't really cut the mustard, does it?

Your concern for Ukraine is touching. Curious that you only seem interested in one very specific aspect of the war though. It's almost as though there's another agenda at play. Almost.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,512 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

During World War Two, there were significant number of British, American citizens employed in producing films, radio output, visiting and entertaining troops and workers in factories.

Participating in international events flies the flag for Ukraine in the world, a flag Russia seeks to extinguish and turn into a puppet state like Belarus.

And this obvious agenda in your posts has gone beyond tiresome. Historically ignorant, patronising and morally dubious. Everyone can see what axe you are grinding here.

Here's my sentence again in case you missed it

» "And if someone thinks they can all go back and get some cushy "logistics" job, or polish Spitfires to "do their bit", it doesn't work like that."

You are Ukrainian, you go back to help, you can be drafted to the frontlines. You volunteer, where there's a higher chance you get more choice, but you can still end up at the frontlines.

Recruitment and support is always going to be challenging and difficult. However in a situation where the majority of Ukrainians are directly or indirectly helping the war effort already it's strange to see such idealised nitpicking.

Almost all soldiers on the Russian border with Finland are now in Ukraine
