Boil Coffee?

Thoughts on adding coffee to cold water and then bringing to boil or nearly boil? Away camping regularly and just to try something different I said I'd ask.

Any views?

Better off boiling the water first, then adding the coffee and allowing it to brew and settle.

I wouldn't do it that way, makes for a very bitter brew.

How I do it at home and away camping is to throw grounds into a big mug and then add boiling water. Let sit for a minute and give it a stir to settle the grounds. Add milk and your good to go. Best coffee you will drink.

Water has to be boiling otherwise the grounds will never settle, you know if you have it right because it develops a thick foam which holds the grounds up.

You get the whole essential oils of the coffee so it tastes better than any filtered, just watch as you get near the bottom or you get a mouth full of grounds.

@OP- what coffee are you using? Instant or ground?
You could make the coffee in a traditional stovetop like the one below and then add hot water to dilute in the mug

Its how they make coffee in Greece and Turkey possibly in Arab countries too. Very finely ground coffee, water and sugar in something like this (small saucepan will work too)

and then not quite bring to the boil. You let it just simmer and bubble up ever so slightly, but not boil. Sometimes the ground coffee has a bit of cardamom in it but that wouldn't be to my taste.

But in general its delicious.

i watched a video where james hoffman seemingly debunked this; at least the idea that boiling water creates burnt-tasting coffee. not sure if it's that idea you're referring to?

@OP - probably an easy thing to test before you head off?

It’s not about “burnt” coffee, it’s about bitterness- all depends how bitter you want your coffee- boiling water brings on more bitterness - you’ll still have “coffee” - it’s just you may not like the taste of it - especially if using strong roasts

this was the video - he comes to the conclusion that boiling water is more likely to extract bitterness in dark roasted coffee, IIRC. also worth mentioning that he's not boiling the coffee *after* mixing. that the equipment will cool down the water as you add it anyway.

Thanks for all the helpful responses. I use ground coffee, usually freshly ground from beans when camping. Ill take on board all the help!

get an Aeropress Go. An absolute no-brainer if you already have the means to boil water.
