32 isn't old in CB terms but fair enough for injury prone.

There was no excitement in the run-in, for the last 8 or 9 games City killed the opposition off before half time.

Son through on goal late on at 0-1 in the second last game probably the only exception to that. Otherwise yeah, pretty bleak viewing for Arsenal fans throughout the last 8 games, not really a glimmer of hope given.

Matip and Thiago are both wrong side of 30, on good wages, are non-homegrown, had contracts expire last week, and missed nearly an entire season just gone.

Not surprised to see either of them leave. The 3rd player in a similar boat is Adrián and I'm surprised that he's renewing his contract. I mean, I get why he's staying, he's basically like another coach and I'm guessing he's dirt cheap, but it's not like he's going to play.

A bunch of academy players also got released today, Musialowski and Frauendorf the notable names - both have played for the first team before.

Next set of players to look at will be the players returning from loan - Carvalho, Ramsay, Beck, Chambers, Koumetio, Jaros, Pitaluga, Phillips, Williams, Morton, van den Berg, Arroyo

They can't keep all of them as only 2 of these players still qualify as u21 for squad purposes.

I feel a lot of Liverpool's summer business is going to be sales and loans out of these sort of players with just a couple of incomings

A club not offering new multi-year contracts to players who will be 33 for the new season, after back are coming back from serious injuries, is not exactly a big deal externally. It certainly is not an indication of their opinion of their abilities. It's just a data-led decision and while being cold about it, probably the smart thing to do.

Liverpool may have offered Matip a 1 year deal but he probably wants a 3 year deal. I was saying to my mates that Matip is worth a hold for a year while they try and sell/replace Konate.

It's a tricky one for this window, as he hasn't played since December with his ACL injury. Will still likely be well off match fitness levels come the start of the season, so will take a degree of faith and patience from whoever signs him. Just have to accept he probably won't be fully up to speed until closer to the new year.

As a free agent he doesn't need to be signed during a window, can sign & play at any time of the year I believe.

Yeah, he can sign any time, but teams want their squads assembled at the start of the season, so he might slip out of the running at otherwise good clubs if they decide to bring in someone who's less of a risk and can hit the ground running. Might see some sort of trial situation before he gets a contract, which for a lad of his level is a bit of a shame.

Why would they try to sell or replace Konaté? They are more likely to be working on a contract extension for him

Which players coming off season long injuries, over the age of 33, did they re-sign to brand new contracts this summer? Or in previous summers?

Sergio Ramos but I don't think he had an injury.

As regards Matip. It's often been the case where players like him go to a smaller club and stay injury free. It may be a case of a different set up where less athletic ability is required.

    So, it never happened then?

Clubs often offer older players one year contracts in their mid to late 30s. Liverpool often did it - Milner for example. Offering them new deals as first team players while coming back from a season long injury is different.

I don’t think he’s at the level required. Look at what the joke of a physical specimen Calvert Lewin did to him. And Klopp took him off and didn’t really pick him after that. He gives away too many fouls in really dangerous areas. Also, he plays like he’s brain dead at times. Matip is superior to him.

I think he is most definitely at the required level. He is surprisingly fast - one of the fastest around as he regularly covers withh ease, very strong generally, is relatively young and I think will get better as the years go by.

He has held his own or done a lot better against alot of centre forwards - only using a half against 1 player is a small sample size to write a player off. Every cetre back fouls in dangerous areas, par for course really, although sometimes he should show a bit more sense. Maybe he gets targetted more, because the other option is Virgil.

Not every CB can have the qualities of Matip. He has work to do though, no denying that but if he can stay fit, cut out a few more fouls and maybe be a bit more aggressive, especially attacking corners, I would be very happy for him to continue.

If Matip hadn't blown his knee I'd be fairly sure he'd have got another 12 months.

Thiago did well this year replacing Kieta as the permacrock midfielder. So thats a vacancy that'll need filling.

Every team in the world would take Konate in their squad

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,208 ✭✭✭Talisman

The primary issue with Konate is his fitness, he misses a lot of games every season. Only 51 league appearances in 3 seasons at Liverpool, 66 league appearances in 4 seasons at Leipzig.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,957 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

In fairness he was 17-21 when at Leipzig and one of his injuries there had him out for a year wasn't it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,692 ✭✭✭doc_17

I’m not saying he isn’t a good 4th choice CB. He’s definitely that. But there are too many issues with him. That’s why I’d sell. And your post means we’d command a good fee for doing so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,692 ✭✭✭doc_17

See, if you’d posted that 2 years ago, I’d have agreed with every word. But I think that is all still true. There’s been no real improvement. Some

Of his fouls are just so stupid that I wouldn’t forgive a 19 year old for them. But, I hope I’m wrong. He can definitely taxi though, fast.

You're using one game to judge him, he's absolutely world class… when he plays, which is the main issue, he does'nt play enough, i'm hoping his injuries are behind him, he turned 25 last week and you could argue he won't peak for another 2 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,208 ✭✭✭Talisman

In 2017/18 at the age of 18 he broke into the first team at Leipzig and played 16 league games. The following season he played 28 league games. In 2019/20, he suffered the first major injury to his thigh and made only 8 league appearances. In 2020/21 he picked up an ankle injury, after which he was in and out of the side for the remainder of the season, making 14 league appearances in total.

44 league appearances in his first two seasons, 22 in the two injury plagued seasons.

    At Liverpool:

    • 21/22 : 11 league appearances
    • 22/23 : 18 league appearances
    • 23/24 : 22 league appearances

The numbers for the past two seasons at Liverpool are close to his first two seasons at Leipzig but the thigh and ankle have been reccuring issues.

Konate actually had a very good injury record this season, given his history. The longest run of games that he missed this season was 3 (in 7 days) in 3 different competitions in March.

Liverpool played 58 games last season. Konate was in the match day squad for 50 of those, missing 1 through suspension and 7 through injury.

He did play in 37 of those 50 games. Sometimes this was because others were selected such as Matip himself, giving time to Quansah/Gomez in the cups etc. but Konate usually started in 1 of the 2 games every week, and when Liverpool were so heavy on fixtures there was bound to be rotation to keep everyone a bit fresher.

Konate was actually a very consistent player for the most of the season. He picked up a knock just before the March international break and then was rushed back to play for France and the full 90 mins. Although his fitness appeared to be there, he never recovered full form after that and was eventually dropped fully for Quansah and the April/May time was the only time of the season when Konate was out of the team completely. Before that he was a big player in defence for Liverpool who had a fairly strong defensive record for the most of the season. For long periods, they had basically the same number of goals conceded as Arsenal who were being talked about as this defensive rock of a team.

It looks like Deschamps has decided on Konate starting for France in the Euros too.

The bigger question is why in the world Deschamps is picking Upamecano over Saliba...

Yeah, magnificent player when he's fit. He, like the rest, looked a bit tired and rusty come the end of this season, but was brilliant prior to that drop. Single handedly kept us in so many games with his interceptions, recovery pace and power, and game-reading. Fitness is a concern for sure though, but would still be hanging onto him at this stage.
