She's never leaving RTÉ. She's incredibly entitled and thinks the station owes her a living because her dad was a star there. But you're right - she's been there about 15 years and has never moved on from being a showbiz reporter, other than when she did Dancing with the Stars. Most of us would take the hint if we were still in the same job after 15 years, but she's enjoying riding the gravy train, and she doesn't seem to have a great deal of self-awareness either.

Pretty respectable 151k, an increase of 40k since they took over, the most listened to show on 2fm

From listening to their show I'd imagine they had a higher listenership rate outside Dublin.

It will be hard for rte to replicate that draw, especially if they're relying on dynastic talent who go foggy eyed when places outside the M50 are discussed.

Yes, Dan Healy admitted in an interview a while back that 2fm were consintrating on taking listeners from Iradio/Spin Southwest/Beat/Red FM rather than the Dublin stations.

Very odd that RTÉ was happy to let the presenters of the most-listened to show on the station walk out over not getting extended leave. Jennifer Zamperelli's been off for ages!

Feargal Darcy must be a shoo-in to get the job, since he previously did the same slot on both Iradio and Today FM.

You’d have thought she’d get the hint by now but I guess getting paid a small fortune to read out social media posts is worth it. Which let’s be honest isn’t even news.

Should just get rid of Jen Z. Absolutely hopeless at the highest order. I don’t even know anyone who listens to her

She's supposedly a contractor too so easy to let go, no doubt that will be "fixed" soon before she's snapped up by Virgin.

Who is going to pay her that sort of money anywhere else. She is well paid for the job she does, no way she would leave that and i wouldn't blame her.

She's getting paid to do what a transition year student does on work experience for free. She'd be insane to leave

Around the time it was cancelled RTE had been wanting to get rid of Glenroe for a couple of years but the viewing figures were still averaging close to 500k even into its final season so it was hard to get rid when it remained popular given the figures.

They had announced that the latest season of DWTS was to be the last but it was renewed as the it remains popular I think 478k on average there from googling.

It odd to think that the media think that RTÉ 2fm is now in crisis, the station has been in crisis since 2011 TBH.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

If memory serves me well, Will Leahy had about 170,000 listeners in that (approximate) slot and that was considered not good enough. Dan Healy's idea of success has had to be re-calibrated with each schedule change over the years.

That, of course, is not to say the 2 Johnnies would not have surpassed those numbers over time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,009 ✭✭✭✭flazio

That depends, Will might have been getting 170k of, let's say 500k listeners in total, where as the Jonnies might be getting 151k of 400k listeners. The numbers are meaningless if we don't know the size of the pie, and the pie size is just as fluid.

    This too shall pass.

Over the course of the 2 years following the big gain did the show gain anything substantial or did it just plateau?

Must be a long while back. for example Spin SW is basically the same station as Spin 1038 which is the most listened to in that demo he is talking about in Dublin. Its also the top of that demo in the South West. Does he listen to the people phoning into the 2Johnnies - it isn't that demographic.

I might be in the minority but I've always thought these "radio personalities" who talk non-stop waffle and hit play on whatever is currently on a 20 track playlist are a very BBC Radio 1 or - for want of a better word - English attraction. Trying to make celebrities out of Nick Grimshaw or whoever 😴

I know our inherent inferiority complex leads us to inevitably hire people who've worked at the Beeb or whatever for senior management and they make these appointments. At the end of the day Irish people like listening to music but we tend to seriously dislike people who go on like they've too high of an opinion of themselves, which could be levelled at a huge amount of the current roster.

2FM is supposed to be a music station. Maybe they could try getting back to inoffensive hosts with good taste in music. It would be a lot cheaper and I'd wager a lot more palatable to Irish audiences. Just a guess.

I think the problem is that since 2FM has become entirely financed by the licence fee the higher ups (above Dan Healy) want it to "appeal to all licence fee payers" and to actually get away from being seen as a state funded competitor to Today FM and the regional/local "youth" commercial stations. This wasn't a problem when 2FM was entirely funded by advertising.

Now, its program list far from the stuff it had imposed upon it until 1987 but really this notion of appealing to as many as possible is the only way that a so-called youth station can have Game On and Jennifer Z along with the 2 Johnnies and then the EDM stuff they have Friday and Saturday evenings. There is no real identity, no focus on who they are actually broadcasting to. A real reset is needed and if they are bringing in a temporary schedule for the summer then perhaps that's what is happening come September.

I'm not sure I follow. 170,000 was his (Will's) total "reach" figure. 151,000 was their most recent total "reach".

Do you mean out of all available listeners at that time of the day? Or out of the total listenership to 2FM?

The one major thing to keep in mind is that the population of adults aged 15+ in Ireland has increased since Will was doing drive on 2FM.

Back in summer 2013, when Dan Healy got the job of head of 2fm, himself and RTE had the notion that they could bring 2fm back to the ratings that Barry Lang was getting of 300k+, Healy said that we was going to "Wake the sleeping Giant"

Ha! I love it. That man has a fierce welcome for himself.

He really should also be leaving on May 31st.

Director of Radio "Strategy", how are ya!

Does nobody see they the inherent problem with that premise is that Barry was broadcasting more than a generation ago at this stage. He was a great broadcaster most definitely but at that time local radio was just getting off the ground. Most people were still dipping in and out of the locals and coming back to 2FM which was the only stable national Offering at that stage. A lot of us lived in 2 channel land at the time as well and the BeatBox simulcast was a very novel thing.

The entire landscape had radically changed in the interim.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,183 ✭✭✭HBC08

    This is it exactly.

There seems to be a crack down on outside work.

The 2 Johnnies are in a small set of RTE presenters who can actually make more money and be more successful away from a 5 day a week radio show on 2fm.

This is the same reason Oliver Callan didn't commit immediately when RTE offered him the Tubridy gig.He had to consider his lucrative corporate gigs.

On the lads themselves I was worried for them when they started,I didn't think their humour would translate to the whole country. However I needn't have worried, they turned that show into one of the most successful 2fm shows in decades.

Fair fooks to them, they're likeable guys, funny and successful, too successful to be hanging around on that Mickley mouse Station anyway.

And the number of 15 year olds that listen to radio has plummeted, ie the "pie" is much smaller now.

A commercial youth radio station is an outdated notion now.

The world has changed and kids get all their entertainment on their phones.

Barry was a generation ago in 2013 TBF, 2FM's 1990s heyday is almost valve radio in terms of today.
