Varies between dart and diesel classes. Diesel will have railcar and loco training after the rules exam, before going to depot for driving with mentors.

Does anyone know are there other benefits drivers get aside from salary? I have heard it mentioned there is health insurance and discounted/free public transport but can't find any concrete information. Also wondering how many days annual leave there are?

There doesn't seem to have been any information booklet released like you would see for other public sector jobs.

Does anyone know is the salary of train driver paid weekly or monthly and what are deductions from it e.g. for pension scheme etc.? How much are they approximately?

I think starting salary on training is €45,000 rising to €50,000+ when fully trained and goes up to €65,000 now. Also I know from my experience working with bus eireann that there’ll be a weekly €5 deduction for the union membership, approx €2.50 deduction a week to cover the free gp visits scheme, pension deductions weekly normally start at about €30 . Free travel on bus and rail throughout Ireland for you and your immediate family, they also are covered under the free gp visits. Also in bus Eireann we had to pay €20 a week back for our first two years to cover the cost of our training but if you stay two years you get the money back which amounts to over €2,000 so I’d imagine Irish rail have something similar to this also.

staring salary for trainees is approx €45000 rising to nearly €50000 when passed out. 10 year pay scale up to currently approx €66000.

At the moment paid weekly but they can put you monthly as a new hire(probably won’t though)

About €32 weekly pension contribution. You don’t pay this as a trainee unless your previously appointed to the company.

Income protection scheme and critical illness cover which is mandatory is about €40 per week. You dont pay this as a trainee.

Union fees are not mandatory, you don’t have to join a trade union.

You don’t have to pay back training costs as nobody would take the job if you had to pay that back as the cost would be astronomical.

Just to add the top of pay scale is €65000 now but in 2026 it’ll be a couple of euro short of €70000

Im starting next week. The pay starts at €49000 during training and then rises to €52000 when fully trained. Then after 10 years its €65000. Im also going to be paid monthly which i think is a new thing for new recruits but not sure. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your responses! And what about other benefits mentioned by mickkelly1990? Are there any Christmas Bonuses or something like this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 471 ✭✭Rootsblower

No bonus or anything like that.
No overtime,as in time and a half or double time. Anything over your contract hours is paid at flat time or time in lieu.

No health insurance as asked by mickkelly1990.
The income continuance/critical illness I mentioned is worth it’s weight in gold.

Were you told you are going to be paid monthly? You're the first driver I've heard of getting paid monthly, I had heard rumours before but nothing concrete.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 samcro_savagery

@TheShepard Yeah when I received my official offer during the week it says paid monthly. It's a bit of a bummer cos I was expecting weekly and I'm currently paid monthly and I hate it. I'm going to be on the Dart, I don't know if that makes a difference.

My offer of employment in 2019 had monthly pay in it too I think, paid weekly though. Never once was it monthly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 118 ✭✭TheShepard

just checked there and it did say monthly on the original offer. Now I was chatting to a trainer in Inchicore lately and he said I was going to monthly a few months back and that never happened, so for now I'd say you are likely to be paid weekly. Dart or Diesel is all the one too..

I really hope it's weekly, suppose I'll find out next week. I wonder if they just put that in the contract so they could change it to monthly whenever they want. Thanks for the info though.

I think in one of the previous pay deals (2017 I think) the concept of monthly pay for all new or promoted employees was accepted. I’d also be fairly confident that the agreement included that they could move a post 2017 employee from weekly to monthly pay with adequate notice.

got my offer this morning after applying back in January 2023 , buzzing! Anyone still waiting don’t lose faith , it’s just a long wait !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18 mana1234

I got an offer but then they asked for my references ? Does anybody know if the references are just a formality or can a reference through out after recovering an offer ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,449 ✭✭✭Citizen Six

Well done! I know you've be hanging around a while, waiting for the next stage. Are you going to Mallow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,449 ✭✭✭Citizen Six

I wouldn't stress about the references. It's just to make sure you are the kind of person you said you were.

    Hello all,

Unfortunately I didn't get past the second interview.

I may or may not reapply.

My question is, If I were to reapply, are my OPC results still valid or will the assesments have to be redone?

    Cheers all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18 DustyShowbiz

@Alpha1-1Cretty Sorry to hear you didn't get through, I believe they are valid for 2 years, if I can remember correctly. Also if you are unsuccessful you can't re-apply for 6 months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 428 ✭✭Designator

its worth reapplying. I didnt get past the online exams my first time applying, so tried again the following year and now im starting training next month and im glad i reapplied. dont give up yet, not many people get in on the first try

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭Alpha1-1Cretty

Thanks for the tips guys. Will I have to resit the OPC Assesments even though I have valid passes? I lost out at the line manager interview so just looking to make sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 samcro_savagery

Hey sorry to that. I think you should go for it again. I've seen people on here saying they failed at the interview stage too but when the next recruitment came around they emailed HR first before doing the first online tests to check to see if there results were still valid. I know one person aleast who done this and went straight back to the interview stage and didnt have to sit all the tests again. Hope this helps.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18 DustyShowbiz

Test results are valid for 2 years. But you can't apply for another recruitment drive for 6 months.
