Campagnolo Shamals for €801 seem an absolute bargain. HG, XDR and N3W Freehubs all available.

    https://www.bike24.com/p2382992.html

Very tempted, trying at the moment to decide on buying 2 sets of wheels for my new bike. Planning a cheaper alloy pair for gravel tyres and carbon rims for road. Seems best to buy wheels with same hub to make swapping easier. Was leaning to two pairs of DT swiss which would run me somewhere in the region of €1400-1500 for carbon and 500 -600 for DT GR 1600 or ER 1400.

The Shamals are very tempting at the price though there's not a cheaper pair of Campags or Fulcrums that are as good as the GR 1600's. Don't think I want to chance mixing brands, Could buy two pairs of the Shamals I suppose! It would be cheaper than the DT but maybe not in the long term as the cup and cone bearings do need more maintenance.

They've also relisted the ad for the Shamal Mille Blacks. They're still out of stock but it looks like they have more coming in

I may be wrong, but 3.4 kg seems a bit on the heavy side for a steel frameset.

I'd say that's a typo as my Spa Elan frame is under 2.5kg

Was fabulous. For whoever secured one. But nothing available now.

I reckon this is a hidden gem:

Search “Trek alpha road bike (great condition)” on adverts. I can’t post the link for some reason.

Hear me out. It’s a Trek 1200 from 2006. My first bike was a 1200 SL from the same year. I rode it for a few years then had it blasted and powder coated before rebuilding it and eventually I broke it in a crash in 2018.
    I currently have a 1500 SLR; also from 2006.

Trek Alu frames from that era are brilliant. Granted the components and wheels are well past their prime, but the frame would still make a great base for a road bike with a more modern group and wheelset.

Looks like a 54cm to me. The head tubes were mega short on these models…

Bike discount have matched the price on Campag Disc Brake Shamals, shipping is higher but they don't have oversize charge so works out €16 cheaper @ €786 Too late for me I ordered from Bike24 2 hours ago! 😭

Yeah. Absolutely nothing is shifting on the used market. I think because bikes have stock and are doing deals and also used stuff is overpriced because lads paid top dollar the last few years.

Even cyclesuperstore, whose idea of a blowout sale is usually 7% off full RRP :D have massive reductions on some top Lapierres. There's a dura ace di2 build there for 5k ish, down from 9. Unheard of bargains.

The whole apres covid shortage made me re-think what I actually need instead of what I want. For me it boiled down to smiles per miles. There are certain bikes that I deeply regret selling and the common denominator with those bikes was simplicity. I've just gone back to a steel frame rim brake bike and couldn't be happier.

Yes, but is it a bargain? It's 50% off the headline figure they set, for an 11spd mechanical build.

God knows Lapierre needed all the help it could get in recent years to sell ANY bikes.

fair point, saw the Aircode DRS 9.0 Road that fat bloke mentioned - so maybe it's what these bikes should have been selling for? also agree on shifting second hand bikes, I'll take mine down from adverts soon - like no interest at all haha.

Hunt have 20% off their carbon wide aero 36mm and 50mm wheelsets. Does anyone have any experience of these?

Would the 50mm be a bit too deep for windy days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,543 ✭✭✭jamesd

Ive 50mm Hunts on my trek domane , no issues with wind - just need to be a little extra aware if its windy but you get used to it very quickly.

i wouldn't call a 3k frame a 'bargain' - but a colleague of mine has been tempted to get a wilier zero SLR and spotted this on saldenbikes.com - 2k off the frame.

I've been watching them at that price for about 6 weeks, I believe they sold off old stock and have none left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 965 ✭✭✭gn3dr

I bought some GP5000 from Bike 24 a couple of weeks ago. Was buying 23 mm so cheaper but I think their wider sizes were competively priced also https://www.bike24.com/p2305147.html

Any chance of getting extra discounts from cyclesuperstore, b2r or the likes? Or are they unlikely to drop the price more from whatever is already offered. Decided to pull a trigger on a touring/gravel bike. Bit reluctant of buying online as I feel I need the bike that is propperly fitted so my back wont kill me on day1. Went in to couple of LBS but most of the bike they got are in such an boring/ugly colors that I couldn’t consider any of them.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 26,153 Mod ✭✭✭✭CramCycle

Very little, if you are local its worth calling in and asking whats the best price but CSS are unlikely to move much if at all. IIRC they are also the suppliers to LBS for many brands and them undercutting would be very bad for the distributor part of the business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,709 ✭✭✭omri

Any views on the big brands that sell direct to consumers? Or even rose ? Watched some reviews lately and people (or bike shops/ bike fitters) point out a lot of problems with buying bike online without trying them out first and ending up spending more after purchase for fitting and parts replacement/upgrade. I suppose going for used would be an option but kinda feel bit risky to me.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 26,153 Mod ✭✭✭✭CramCycle

I have a ROSE and love it but they are right, trying in a shop will always be the best way to buy a bike. Or if you have a bike that fits you well, get a bike fit and get them to give a rough approximation of your ideal set up so that you have something to refer to when looking on line.

If there is a bike in CSS or B2R that you like, why not go there even without getting a discount? Also, if you get sized up in a LBS in a brand you like, ask can they get the colours you like and order it in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 699 ✭✭✭ARX

Bought a Canyon a couple of years back and sent it back immediately as it was shockingly badly assembled. Bought a Rose and I'm very happy with it - it arrived in perfect condition and I couldn't find anything at all wrong with it. After-sales tech support was very good too. Bear in mind that Rose will send the bike with the front brake on the right rather than the left - you could try asking if they'll switch it. They couldn't do it for me so I paid someone local to do it. It's not a big job but I didn't have time to do it. I changed the saddle and tyres but that's probably a given on any bike.

What problems do you have in mind exactly? The component specifications should be given so you'll know what you're getting. If it's the fit, then all you can do is compare the geometry to your existing bike - if you're not happy doing that, then you're probably better off paying the extra to buy locally (particularly if you're between sizes).

Rose have been phenomenal in after sales service. I have asked them really awkward technical questions about replacement parts, and they always come back with answers. I very highly recommend them although apparently they don't ship the same range to Ireland anymore.
