My memory must be worse than I thought cos that's exactly what happened 😅

If I'd to look at players for a TOTS now it'd be

    Vicario,

    Walker/White, Gabriel, VVD, (LB?)

    Rice, Rodri, Mac Allister

    Salah, Watkins, (LW?)

LB and LW I'm not sure. Maybe Ake or Udogie for LB?

Foden or Palmer for LW? But both have played more central. Don't want to put Saka over there because he's played RW. Mitoma was superb but been injured for ages now. Maybe Gordon or Martenli who've done well?

Toss up for me at RB between Walker and White. Both have been brilliant.

Saliba, VDV and Stones have all been excellent at CB as well but the two I've picked have just shaded it for me and I think they'd compliment each other very well.

I think my midfield three would dominate most games. Has a bit of everything and I think it'd be hard to pick three midfielders who've done better this season?

I think you'll have people look for Saka over Salah which is fair enough I feel but Salah is a scoring and assisting machine so he's my pick.

Halaand is better than Watkins as a CF but Watkins is having a better season so he's getting the nod.

Baffled by the inclusion of Vicario. Only 6 keepers in the league have conceded more than him and he’s not particularly high up in quantity of saves either.

Hes also routinely targeted by attacks on corners, so I don’t understand where this whole thing about him being amazing has come from.

He's made some massive saves this season that have earned Spurs more points than they should have had. He was shakey for the first two weeks or so but has grown into the role since.

Spurs always give away fairly high quality chances so and if I'm right I'd imagine he's probably top or very close to the top of goals prevented that you'd expect to be scored.

Next best I'd say would be Martinez.

I took the absolute piss out of Onana this season but he's doing much better now and most of his shocking performances were in the CL.

Can't pick Ederson or Alison because they've both missed a good few games. Kelleher has been great since he came in but hasn't played enough games.

Raya has been good but not to the same level as Vicaro and I'd imagine he's faced the fewest shots out of the two (with Onana facing the second most in the league going by Sky the other day).

VVD shouldn't be in the conversation imo, I think Mac Allister has been the outstanding Liverpool player. Agree as regards Rice. For me Bernardo Silva has been outstanding for City but so has Rodri and Foden is a good shout as well.

If you asked me who the best player I've seen in the Premier league this season the first one that comes to mind is Douglas Luiz. Son and Watkins would be a contenders as well, Solanke has had a great season, Cole Palmer too and Jarrod Bowen has been excellent.

Its going to be somebody from the three teams fighting it out though and for me I think I'd give it to Rice no matter which of them wins it.

Straight up though, no bias I'd pick Douglas Luiz.

VVD has been the best CB in the league this year without question. His levels are beck to that before his knee injury and his high level performances have come beside a changeable back four all season which adds to the impressiveness.

For all the Emery criticism last night (not that he or anyone at Villa will be too upset by it), the only 3 that were actually rested were Tielemans, Pau and Bailey all of whom are either returning from injury, or the kind of guy whose fitness levels never really lend themselves to doing 90 minutes 3 games a week.

Martinez (late illness), Cash, Kamara, McGinn, Ramsey, Watkins all unavailable through injury or suspension.

I don't think there was any criticism. What I saw was that people said it fell well for City that Villa were missing so many and others weren't 100% fit while City were also not at their strongest.

After Spurs dropped points the night before there was less need to try get something from the City game so why not rest some guys for an extra few days and have a better condition squad for the weekend.

VVD is having a very good season, as are Saliba and Gabriel. But VVD would shade it for me as Arsenal are more of a defensive team and that makes their job easier. But there’s still a quarter of the season left.

I wouldn't say they are more defensive but they've had a relatively settled back five with rice shielding them for the majority of the season so that helps.

If anything I'd say they are a little more cautious. Liverpool like to try win the ball high up the field and tend to leave gaps if you can beat the press. Arsenal seem to block off space and squeeze the opposition closer to the half way line which helps to reduce that space you are giving up.

VVD has been comfortably been the best centre half in the league this year, it would be madness if he's not in the team of the year.

VVD absolutely should be in the conversation. MacAllister has been sensational, but only for a couple of months as we were wasting him as a 6.

Rodri is the best player in the League though. And I don't think it's close. Foden is incredible. Silva is somehow still underrated. But Rodri is the kingpin.

Son isn't near the conversation. Neither is Solanke. Neither is Luiz. All great seasons, but not absolute top tier. They just aren't.

It should be Rodri v Rice v VVD. But I've a sneaky feeling Foden will get it.

Where did I say he's not the best CB in the league? I'm simply pointing out that I think Mac Allister has been Liverpool's best player.

I have to say I Iike Vicario but I agree he shouldn't be in the conversation for team of the year.

For me it's your guy, Martinez, and it's not even close.

That's the way it looked to be phrased when you said he shouldn't be in the conversation. Mac Allister was consistently good at DM up until Endo broke into the team. After that as he was pushed up into the 8 spot he's been excellent and probably our second best and second most important player after VVD.

Arsenal's attack hasn't been firing as well as it was in that run in February. I wonder will they start to slow down now in terms of wins when their run gets trickier?

    Their last 4 games has been;

    Arsenal 2 - 1 Brentford (1.28 xG created)

    Arsenal 1 - 0 - Porto (0.92 xG created in 120 mins)

    Man City 0 - 0 Arsenal (0.66 xG created)

    Arsenal 2 - 0 Luton (0.82 xG created)

Martinelli being out for those games has hampered us a bit I reckon. Trossard is good in bursts but lacks the explosiveness of Martinelli. Looks like he's back now so I'd say the normal front three will be back at the weekend or the Bayern game at the latest.

An injury to Odegaard, Rice or one of the centre backs would have a big impact on them, if all of them are available for the remaining matches then they should have a great chance, think City will win their last 8 games so likely Arsenal will have to do the same.

Comfortably the best is quite an exaggeration.

Pretty specific run of games there. Second string attack versus Luton, plus two early goals so no need to push. Porto and City are tough games to attack in ..

Whatever about City but Porto is not a tough game to attack in. They are usually good for a bit of a beating in the knockout stages of the CL especially.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,904 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Fair points. It was a question more than a statement by me really as the numbers are much much lower than what we've seen for the rest of the season.

There has only been 5 other games with an xG lower than 1.0, spread out over a number of months, but then 3 in a row in the last few games.

Gonna go out on a limb and say you didn't watch the game so, Porto were full Atletico this season, antics and seriously good defending.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,983 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

I did watch both games. Porto did try to break up the game (especially the first one) but that's what usually happens when the smaller team meets a bigger team.

If anything I'd say it's up to arsenal to push the issue and put Porto under enough pressure that they make mistakes. I thought Arsenal were very cautious and risk averse in the first game.

Big 4 days for for Ten Hag. Lose against Chelsea and Liverpool and get d say he’s done for, if he isn’t already.

Van Dijk has made a couple of mistakes this season which cost his team. He's been outstanding for most of the season but those errors put him below Mac Allister for me.

Getting shouldered off the ball by Martinelli being a pretty big one

Scored the winner in extra time in the final of the League Cup which for me was really important. It is seriously difficult to win any trophy with Man City and I still think it is more likely that they win a treble this year than Liverpool or Arsenal win the league, christ I hope I am way off the mark.

Tbf I think about a third of teams have struggled to keep their actual number 1 on the pitch so it kinda boils down to Vicario/Martinez with maybe Leno/Onana (if they want to nominate a top 3) for keeper. Martinez wins comfortably.
