Moving from one public sector job to another

Hi. I'm looking for advice about moving from the Guards to a grade 3 position with a local authority. I want to know if my service in the Guards would allow me to jump points on the payscale as a grade 3 rather than starting at point 1 on the scale.

I had heard before that because they are similar grades that this could be possible.

If anyone has any experience of this or something similar I'd love to hear.

As far as I am aware your service in the Guards won't count towards your salary in the new job but it will count towards your pension in the end. You'll probably have to start at point one on your new salary.

In terms of the other way around. Just curious if you were a pre 2013 recruited civil servant and joined the Gardai, I presume the terms and conditions of the pension you paid into would carry across. Also I presume you wouldn't get incremental credit if your current salary was a lot more then the starting Garda salary?

Yes you are right on both counts. If you on the pre-2013 pension and join the Gardai then you will remain on the pre 2013 pension in the Guards. Just beware you don't have a break in service (I think it is 22 weeks) because if you do they will put on to the new pension. I learned that to my cost. That's also true, no matter how much you earn in the civil service your starting salary in the Guards will be the same.
