I had a couple of terriers over the years that were named Madrá. I thought them to respond to commands as gaeilge as well. You'd be amazed how many people couldn't get their heads around a dog "understanding" Irish.

Just bear in mind OP that the dogs name will probably be <name>-it-means-<english translation> to anyone you don’t know. My neighbour gave his dog an ‘Irish’ name (that he made up) and he’s always telling people what he thinks it means lol 🤭 … Being a human with a weird name it’s irritating as I have to repeat/correct it often.

You can. You could call it badger or broc. Particularly if it's a grey dog.
