Delighted for Italy. Hope it quietens those calling for them to be booted out of the 6N.

Just what the tournament needed really.

If the France and England matches went their way, imagine how the table would look this weekend!

Please please please get Jamie Heaslip off the TV

That's asking for a lot of ducks to be in a very long row and all at once. A better target for them would be to finally break their England duck; only then can they be seen as even an outsider.

Cracking game in Cardiff so far.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,495 ✭✭✭Shehal

I would love it but think that's a big ask, The goal long term would consistently 3-4th in the ranking which would be inline with how they've done at u20 level.

Barre looks handy at 15. Deportere not really gotten into the game at 12

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,062 ✭✭✭✭Losty Dublin

The talk all week in Cardiff focussed on empty overpriced seats in the Principality for today, along with names of Gatlands successor. Based on the first half here, Warren G looks assured for at least one more season to pad up his pension.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,077 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

Being realistic, they could very plausibly beaten England, should've beaten France, and be heading into next week looking for a 4th win vs Wales. They're only going to get better imo, if they can harness the talent coming through at underage.

He had a couple of big carries in the first 5 minutes. NLG very lively so far.

Assuming Ireland and France remain top dogs, it would only take that extra dab of luck and 5% more mental toughness for Italy to finish number 2 or 3 - though agree about breaking their duck with England. Next might be to target Scotland and Wales for regular wins and not just the occasional "shock".

Crazy to think Quesada is only in the job a wet weekend and he has basically overachieved already(?), where there but for the grace of god and a couple of CMS drift of a ball, Italy would have been 3 wins from 4. one ponders if this is just the honeymoon effect

Well that rounded off a great weekend of Rugby in the 6 nations.

A much better second half display by France.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,258 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

The Welsh bench had a negative impact while France's subs were excellent.

Amazed that Pearce never warned Wales for repeated infringments in their red zone.

He also correctly pinged France for 'rolling' after being brought to ground in the tackle yet was happy when Wales 'rolled' over the try line. Weird.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,258 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

He said Roberts was never held in the tackle so was allowed get up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 581 ✭✭✭Ben Bailey

If you are brought to ground in a tackle, the tackle is completed and you must release the ball. The tackler(s) must release the ball carrier.

It appeared to me that the ball carrier, if never held, never attempted to regain his feet, but rolled forward without releasing the ball.

But Pearce had his own view and it differed from mine.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,258 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

It's very debatable and I thought he had absolutely butchered a certain try seeing it live but on the replay he was never brought to ground as the French defender glanced off him and was 2m away when Roberts went to the floor (same scenario as a tap tackle). Fickou then dives on him on the ground (penalty try offence) and Roberts, rather than rolling, partially gets up to dive over the line.

I think Fickou himself was very hard done by earlier when he 'rolled' to present the ball on the correct side.

  • Registered Users Posts: 581 ✭✭✭Ben Bailey

Yep, fair read. But not consistent with his call on Fickou.

Also delighted for Italy. Hopefully they go on to become more competitive again next year

With that being said they are now on track to not win the wooden spoon for just the 7th time in 24 years so I can understand why some people think they shouldn't be in the tournament. For me the 2 options if we kick them out are either reverting to the 5 nations or bringing in a Tier 2 nation. Neither of which are overly sensible in my mind

Nobody would agree to going back to 5 nations for numbrr of reasons in particular finances and a replacement isnt ready though all 6 nations need to be playing georgia, portugal more every year

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,587 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

They're also now ranked above Australia for the first time in the world rankings which says a lot about both teams funnily enough.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,018 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Something tells me if Italy make themselves comfy in the middle of the table in the medium term, the cries to relegate Wales or Scotland - or whoever becomes the new wooden spoon enthusiast - will disappear quick enough cos suddenly it's an established nation and not the wobbly upstart. And given the way the various unions are trending, that doesn't seem so outrageous either.

Besides don't Italy have equal status on the competition board or overall brain trust now? Seems to recall they couldn't be booted out now unless there was a concerted conspiracy against them by the other 5...

As of today Georgia are the only team with a claim to join the tournament and it'd take a few years of upsets in November to make that happen - and even then. Nobody's itching to organise travel packages to Tbilisi.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,669 ✭✭✭Red Silurian

Yes, Italy are 1/6th shareholder in the 6 Nations. The other 5 Nations could in theory pull out and start a breakaway 5 Nations tournament and Italy could (again, in theory) decide not to send a team and instead sit back and let the profits roll in. Maybe start a tournament with the T2 European nations that they will always win?

There's lots of possibilities but on your point about travel packages to tiblisi - good weather and cheap beer, what more could you want?

If Georgia/Portugal want to play the big boys they have to step up put proper invites out during the international windows. This idea of a nation getting financial benefits without bothering to try is nonsense

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,018 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

good weather and cheap beer, what more could you want?

A trip to Lisbon 🤭 Look at where Georgia is on the map, it's barely in Europe.

I'd call it now: IF, and it's obvious a gigantic if dependant on results and "shocks" cos Portugal aren't there yet, it became either Georgia or Portugal joining the tournament, watch the latter get the nod. Said it before but if Georgia were Germany instead, they'd have joined the fun years ago.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,077 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

Spain and Portugal would be better options for expansion, for multiple reasons. Sucks for Georgia, they've really added some quality back play recently.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,078 ✭✭✭✭phog

We should certainly be playing something like A games v the likes of Portugal, Spain & Georgia

We have 100 or so players sitting on arses during the international windows and some with no pathway (bar multiple injuries to players in one position) to the national team

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,587 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

The tricky part about that is that there are URC games peppered around the 6N games so it would be hugely detrimental to the provinces to lose more players than just their full internationals.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,962 ✭✭✭OldRio

An Irish club XV team did play against Portugal A at the weekend. Small shoots I know.
